Gearbox oil change

Featured Replies

I have a manual Skoda Superb Combi 2.0 TDI with 150 hp. I think there is no periodicity for oil changes in the manual gearbox, but as I'm getting closer to 150.000 km (90.000 miles) I'm starting to think about changing it.

Does anyone know the VW reference number for the oil? And the torque specs for the gearbox oil drain and fill plugs?

Thank you!

Good question. Same engine and gearbox as you, looking for the same

I'd imagine it's similar if not identical to this

Can't help with the question but had mine changed on a 1.4tsi at 80,000km by an Indy.  The oil was black and very thin, was very happy to get it changed.  Got the oil from a Skoda dealer and it took 3.5 lites I think.

Try to download the gearbox chapter from cardiagn.com. There are all workshop available for free.

For sure you'll find oil quantity and plugs' torques. ;)

Not: I went to an Audi dealer to do the same on my wife's Audi Q3. They looked at me as if I was an alien coming from Mars or wherever! And replied: Oh no sir, it's unnecessary to replace manual gearbox oil. It's filled for life. We only do it when we face gearbox damage... 🙄

I'm unclear why it would be black. Where did the black come from? Certainly true that gearbox oil loses its lubricity over time (and becomes thin and lifeless) but black implies combustion products (carbon) which you wouldn't expect to find in a gearbox.

What about damage caused by lack of maintenance.......

Does anyone know the correct oil spec for our gearboxes?

And contamination by wear products - eg. syncro-rings etc.

Errr…VAG customers satisfaction policy?
I don’t really understand why such a philosophy…

Black may have been an overstatement but it was certainly a good deal darker compared to the new oil. Quite why I can't say!

Did you actually see the job done?

Hyperbole like that from a mechanic is often employed to cover the fact that they have not actually changed anything.

When I suspect I am being told Porkies, the longer and more detailed the story the more likely it has been made up.

I did, as it is one of those jobs I don't actually believe they will do if you leave the car them!  Saw the oil go out and new oil go in.  They showed me what came out.

Great minds think alike!

Or maybe suspicious minds!
