Brake judder on my Fabia

Featured Replies

Hi,

About a year ago, I replaced the front discs and pads with Brembo components form ECP.
I have changed discs and pads on many cars and so know how important it is to get the hubs spotless before fitting the new discs.
By now, I’ve done about 5,000 miles on them including a trip up and down the steep hills of the Lake District last summer.
More recently, I have noticed a judder with moderate braking which is disappointing. I had this also on my Mk 4 GTi with Brembo brake parts that we fixed using EBC discs. Also the same on my son’s TTS.

So which brake discs and pads are you using that removes this issue?
I’m severely doubting the Brembo parts at the moment.

All thoughts very welcome.

AFAIK (which isn't much) Brembo quality has dipped in the past, you can't just go on a name or old brand name now (though I've no idea about Brembo).  I put some Pagid discs and pads on my wife's MK3 18 months and 12k-miles ago and they've been fine since (I've no idea if Pagid do Mk1).  (Pagid left Yorkshire many years back under German rule),

I do wish I'd changed the slider pins rather than thoroughly cleaning and lubricating them - if you are the same it might be a cheaper resolve to try changing slider pin sets first to see if it makes any odds if it's not wobbly Brembo disc(s), you could check the discs too to see if it's a complete do over or not.

I was going to get Akebono brake pads but they don't list Skoda and I didn't know or could be bothered to find out if any of the Golf listed ones fit, no Polos listed either, I just wanted to give them a try.

EBC is our local family owned (still?) brake manufacturer, many seem to like them but I've never had any of their products on any of our cars, no idea if they do Fabia Mk1 or Mk3.

I'm out of thoughts now and need to lie down.

Thank you for your replies.

I believe the slider pins are fine with no noticeable wear on the last inspection.
I can buy the ATE discs easily but not matching pads.

My wife’s TT has Pagid discs and pads and has been totally fine for maybe 5 years. My son fitted Pagid parts to his TTS and they juddered. Only fixed with the EBC discs.
so it seems a game of pot luck but ATE parts seem to be fitted at the factory.

They're not slider pins and they're in a rubber bushing so they can't wear out, the pads are physically retained by the rigid caliper carrier so there is no force on the calipers themselves, they simply provide the clamping force and the bushed pins prevent the caliper moving as the wheel bounces about.

I've always had very good results with Brembo but the quality may have deteriorated with so much crap being made in China from recycled steel, discs should be nodular cast iron, not cast steel.

Had no bother with Pagid on mine.

I have quite liked Brembo pads and discs, they have a quicker initial bite. Just fitted a whole new set on a non Skoda car and was looking to buy for my Fabia.

The Apec front disks on my Fabia have done nearly 50k miles and the only judder I had was when the carrier bolt became loose due to rusted threads. After a few thousand miles after a new hub fitted the slight judder disappeared as the pads bedded back in.

Maybe check the carrier bolts?

Thank you for more replies. The car does not have carrier bolts as it has the FS111 callipers.

I’m part way through reinstallation using ATE discs and Pagid pads.  Just finished one side before the rain comes. I’d have bought ATE pads but not available at the moment.
I did explore fitting some genuine pads and went to the local Skoda dealer and I was shown what is called the economy range. They looked very rough and had chipped edges to the pads. Made in India.  Not an economy price at £58 and apparently the non economy pads are about £75! The Pagid pads look well made as I would expect.
Don’t need to use the car over the weekend so I’ll complete the job on the next fine day.

As I have fitted one side of Pagid , I’ll carry on!

It does appear ECP are out of stock, although elsewhere such as amazon are often cheaper.

Just reporting back after the Pagid pad and ATE disc change.
All went well during the job and I was meticulous in ensuring the hub and discs were spotless.

so far, I’ve done about 40 miles, the braking is nice and progressive and there is no judder (at the moment). Early days I know but looking positive at the moment.
