Fault codes P256300 and P029900

Featured Replies

Skoda Fabia 1.6 tdi 2011

bought second hand and had it 5 weeks before these codes have come up.

When I took it to a garage to get it checked they tried to do a Forced regeneration and it didn’t work - maybe too clogged up? Any advice on what to do now

Hi welcome.

You would possibly be best to take it to somewhere that can do a full diagnostics and/or specialises in VWs.

There are plenty of possibilities to causes and repairs, some might be easy. More information is needed as the codes are quite generalised, what is the mileage of the car, do you know any fairly recent history of the car, its previous usage, servicing and maintenance history.

Mileage is around 121,000 and it comes with service/ maintenance history which all looks ok. Don’t know anything about its prev usage as I’ve only just got it.
Garage says the soot levels were high and no other codes came up to give any other indication of what’s wrong. They says it the symptom of another problem. A forced regeneration didn’t work (they said because there wasn’t enough fuel in it although there was a quarter tank) they put dpf treatment in fuel and told me to go for a drive - but the engine management light keeps coming on and it repeatedly goes into limp mode still (coil warning light flashing).  Will other garages have better diagnostics that might tell more? I was wondering if it’s worth getting a VDCS ?

Did they give you any soot loading figures? The CAYC engine is a PITA for DPF problems

They didn’t tell me the soot figures…

Have tried to get the dealer to fix but they are telling me that they have ceased trading and so I’m stuck with a crap car and not sure what to do about it.
would a VCDS give me more codes/info - why are they so vague?

They're vague because they want to keep all your munny and they don't want to fix the car, sorry.

Check to see if they have genuinely ceased trading, report to trading standards or consider taking to County Court.

For fault codes, which are often only a pointer in the right direction rather than the full diagnostics solution, you could perhaps see if there is someone local to you with a VCDS or suitable machine to see what information it can give.  It's also good to have a second independent reading you can see done in front of your eyes and see the readout and have recorded report.

The car could have something like a turbo actuator fault plus need a regen.  The regen does take more than most people realise and a lot more if you are only used to driving the car steadily and over shorter journeys, and you don't want a low tank of fuel.

It may or may not be a crap car, and being an older modern diesel it may or may not be suited to your driving and usage  - it could be a good car just with common and easily resolved problems, or not, over the internet no one is going to be able to confirm (at least this early on).

You'd probably not want to do as these guys did and certainly not until you know for sure what the actual problems are and this may not be necessary if other issues are resolved. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6nIjAglvLw

Personally I'd try to find someone on that list above to at least do a full scan and report and then based on that information consider whether to go for a proper blowout run, or IF I could bounce the car back (despite consumer laws this might not be possible in the real world) or whether to get the repairs and keep the car or sell it on.  I've had dealings with the English motor trade for decades so know how things are in real life as opposed to the ideals, theories and laws, if you are dealing with totally dishonest, or totally incompetent or lazy, people it's difficult to get anywhere useful with them.  That doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't try though, you know your  situation I don't.

Thanks everyone!  so I was driving it long distances so regen should have been happening .
Bought  a VCDS

Scanned:

mileage 195320km - 121366 miles (does this show how long the fault has been there?)

7286 Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor circuit

p2563 oo [175] Implausible signal

Fault frequency 9

mileage 195132

no other faults.

Haven’t the option to force a regen whilst standing (why is that I’d prefer to try this) - but have the option to do whist driving. so tried to do this
Went for drive with my partner,  to monitor soot levels and Tried to do a forced regen whilst driving, I couldn’t get it to work . Coil and engine light were still on when we tried. Should I have cleared them? Followed instructions from wiki but got confused when it said to enter new value of 1 (came up saying something about hexadecimal number and not sure the value I entered was right - I put in 00 01)

Regen didn’t happen as
Exhaust temps stayed around 3/400•c

Calculated soot stayed at around 24

Measured soot went from around -1 to +2

Any suggestions what best to do now? About forcing a regen / what else to try!

My partner found this

Many thanks!

I feel like I'm repeating myself here but the boost control position sensor is the actuator, so this is confirmation that the actuator is faulty.

Why are you looking for another problem when it's staring you in the face?

Contrary to popular belief the actuator is available separately from the turbo and is only about a hundred quid, but the main dealers do not sell it separately so this is probably why no-one wants to fix the car for you.

Sorry for the late post! Just wanted to say thanks everyone for the comments and help. @sepulchraveit was the actuator - my partner replaced it with one bought online, cleared the codes and it is now sorted! So thanks all!
