Changing battery in key makes it not working

Featured Replies

Hey guys

I have 2018 Superb, which prompted i changed the battery on the key the other day.

I had some crappy store bought CR2032 at home, so i changed the battery - and after that it wont work.

Does the battery quality effect the functionality or am i doing other things wrong?

I have tried to syncronize it again, and it wont start if the key is near the start button.

What can I do? I would really not want to go to my mechanic and pay premium dollar for that.

1. measure voltage of new battery

2. check side + -

3. test with old battery, low voltage warning comes several weeks before it dies

haven't had problems even with few months outdated from Ali,

just they lasted shorter time, ~13 months instead ~22

This happened to me when I replaced the batteries in both keys fobs not long after purchase.

I had to synchronise both key fobs one by one.

From p57 of the manual:

Synchronising the remote control

If the buttons on the remote control key have been operated several times beyond the effective range of the system or the battery in the remote control key has been replaced and the vehicle cannot be unlocked using the remote control, the key must be synchronised.

› Press any button on the remote control key.

› Unlock the door with the key in the lock cylinder within 1 minute of pressing the button.

Some coin batteries have a sticker that must be removed. Fooled me too.

That and the bitter coating on some (certainly duracell, maybe others) seems to make a difference too.

The bitter taste patch on Duracell to stop babies/ toddlers swallowing them should not be removed and work fine in both of my Kodiaq fobs.

The correct size battery for the non-kessy Superb remote is CR2025

Mine has CR2032

Not for me to decide whether anything should or should not be removed. I didn't know it could - but I have plenty of equipment that is sensitive to it; Heart Rate Monitors, bike speed and cadence sensors, a few kids toys. Have moved over to Energiser just to avoid having to deal with it.

2025 is 20 mm diameter by 2.5 mm thick, 2032 is 20 mm diameter by 3.2 mm thick.  Many seem to be able to fit the thicker battery in remotes and it might / should? last longer (if it fits without issues) but both are nominal 3V.

As it's so very easy to synchronise the (non-KESSY at least) remote key fobs I've had with cars I always synchronise them after changing battery(ies) just in case (belt, braces and bit of string type thinking) and never have a "spare" key instead alternate the use of both keys, I swap every 6-months but other alternates are available, this way the remotes, batteries, keyblades and locks all get more even wear plus you know where the other key is (rather than mislaid) and that it should be fully operational when you need it, opposite of carrying a spare wheel in the boot for years and it's under inflated or flat when you actually need it.

I normally link to the relevant Owner's Manual for specific instructions (battery changing, synchronising) but once again the Skoda Owner's Manuals site has  problem.

I have changed batteries on two keys now on my 2018 2l with no problems. CR205.

I changed the batteries in all the remotes. Instead of 2032 because that's what it says on the inside of the key cover. The keys work fine. However, when scanning with OBD I get an error message: Remote key 1 voltage too low - B147918 - The fault is not in the battery, because even if I put another one in its place, the same error. I clear the error with OBD, but the next moment it's back. What could it be? Superb 3, L&K, 2.0 TDI, 2018, combi

dont change batteries with open doors on car or sitting in car.

lock car, go away from it in apartment, ensure that is no signal to car and then replace. i always do that way. dont put thick battery. it should easy fit on its place without pushing etc..

As previous post and perhaps synchronise the keys after changing batteries (if you've not already done so).

With these KESSY things keep the second/third key(s) (never have a "spare" key use both or three) in a tin so there's no competition and/or key(s) looking for car.

ETA: is your scanner fully up to date with program for your car and the car battery (and scanner) in a reasonable state of charge when checking?

Have you checked with another scanner?

Could it be the car's computer programs, or it's brain-fart.

Update: Interestingly, new Energizer CR2032 batteries were purchased instead. Under the key cover it says CR2032. I get an error message with them. I thought I would try CR2025 batteries instead and bought Panasonic ones. Miraculously, the error message no longer appears, at least for the last day and a half there has been no error in the OBD. Surprising.

Might be the batteries themselves rather than their size (see also my post here 16 February 2024 for size explanation).

The CR2025 size may not last as long with use as the CR2032. Best is to change batteries before the car gives (genuine) warnings or reminders, it was part of the service with my wife's previous car (not a VW product).

I always synch after changing batteries or if there is an issues as it's so quick and easy clean-hands work which isn't often with the ancient technologies on "modern" cars. Though personally I'd not want the proximity type stuff like KESSY, I prefer a keyblade to a remote.

Some people find some batteries better than others and even if good state of charge is shown (3v is a rounded down nominal figure like the 12v car battery) personally I've used cheap £1 a strip button batteries and had no issues at all but I change them before they show the need.

When the VWŠkoda remote packed up working on my wife's car and attending a "distress" (well pi$$ed-off) phone call from her (she'd forgotten the car alarm goes off when you use the "emergency" only hidden door lock barrel) I tried £2.50 (each) Duracell to be sure of remote failure (on the coldest day of that year having walked 2-miles to get to the car (and 2-miles back) thank you "German engineering" for the £180 premature remote replacement and 'coding'.

Did you give it a night to clear on it's own?

On my Octavia I get a dashboard warning "battery low change key battery".

I swap the battery for a new one and I still have the same error on the dash & kessy doesn't work.

I lock the car with the key and the next morning kessy is working again and the message is gone.
