Mk1 estate roof rails

Featured Replies

Hi,

i have a 53 plate fabia estate and need some roof rails for it, in order that i can fit roof rack etc - does anyone have any for sale or know where i might find some please?  Closer to NE Scotland the better.

thanks

Roof rails were an option on later models IIRC. They're fixed in three points to the roof so adding roof rails isn't an option to you.

Your best option would be roof bars between the front doors and the rear doors.

Are the fixings not there in the roof structure and just needing precise measured drilling to reveal them like on other models like the Octavia?

If so then dependant on your level of confidence and competence a breakers yard or Ebay would yield OE roof rails.

If there are any there probably won't be any need to precisely measure and drill into the roof which seems like a rather large undertaking what with having to guard against rust etc.

At least not if the estate version is like the saloon/ hatch. The mounting points on those models are under rectangular plastic caps. If the OP can check his car then there would, I assume be three each side front to back.

On the MkI Saloon and hatch versions there is a black plastic strip running front to back. The covers are on that with a small notch to remove them. Just to the right of the door in this image. Approximate location can be seen in other image of a hatchback

On our Mk1 Estate that didn't have roof rails the fixings and holes for the rails were there - under the black drainage channel trim and covered by a waterproof aluminium tape.  I looked at fitting them but decided not to in the end.  However, it woudl have been an easy job as the black roof trim just peels out revealing the aluminium tape and fixing holes and etc.

yes this one is the same - the fixings and holes are there under the black trim. Easy enough job if i can find some rails, but none of the breakers up here in NE Scotland have any. i did wonder if the saloon rails would fit??

I dont have fixing points for the bars on my car, so not an option.  However the blanked off fixing points for the rails are under the black plastic trim strip - i just need the rails.  I am an aircraft sheet metal worker, so drilling holes in the right place is not a problem.

living in NE Scotland there are not too many breakers with Mk1 estate cars. i wonder if the rails from a hatchback would fit?

Yes the fixings and holes are under the black drainage channel trim. Nothing on ebay, and the skoda dealer is unable to obtain them.

i dont know about the octavia, but the fixing positions are obvious and blanked off with the black plastic trim removed. Competence in fitting is not a problem, but unable as yet to find rails

There are no roof rails (front to back) for a hatch or saloon. They were only available for the estate version for the extended roof length.

Looks like your option is limited to roof bars (side to side).

I don't know if roof rails from a MK2 would fit or even possibly those from a Seat Ibiza or 9N/ 9N3 Polo. Might be worth looking into if you're good with fab work.

Apologies, I had not appreciated it was a saloon, I've been driving estates for far too long!!!

The OP doesn't have a saloon or hatchback. Read the thread. I was offering options.

Assuming the seller has given the correct info, these will fit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115839990773 when coupled with adapter/fitting kit 5120

This was the first route we went down. Bought the Thule bars and fitting kit, but there is no way of attaching it. I have looked at another car and they would fit, but not on my 53 plate. Hence my conclusion is to retro fit the rails as this is my only option it seems

AHH, I didn't know the hatch didn't have rails.

Dunno if they really have availability, or if you were thinking of spending serious cash to solve this, but LLL parts seem to have new genuine available: 6Y9860025C and Skoda Roof Rail 6Y9860026C - LLLParts both there.

Ideally need a cheap solution since the car is not worth a lot. Thanks I will check out

While looking at what part numbers to search, I did note that there appears to be two versions, of which the newer one isn't apparently just a supersession of the older (A-suffix). So avoid sourcing from cars that are earlier than MY2003. The changeover was some time in MY2002 (tenth digit of VIN=2).

No idea what difference there is but both variants are discontinued:

Now that's interesting, Pete. The lower vehicle in the graphic is a saloon version. I was certain they were never fitted to any saloons or hatchback models. I've never seen any roof rails on a saloon ever. I mean there weren't many sold in the UK but still...

Maybe that explains the part number difference?

Not sure those are roof rails Lee, maybe just trim bits.

Will look at descriptions...

Odd, on small screen and struggling a bit, but 8 seems not to be listed, and 9 is as shown in the table.

It might help if my local Skoda dealer can identify the exact part numbers since he has already said he can't get them any longer?
