Suspension Upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi Guys looking to change springs and shocks on my estate superb TDI . I hate this suspension and is really bouncy also every pot  hole in road is like go over something big . Nasty hit like suspension don’t exist. Any recommendations what is you would recommend.

DCC or non DCC suspension?

I replaced the terrible Monroe shocks with Bilstein B6 damptronic’s on my DCC equipped car, as have several others.
I refitted the original springs as they were in perfect condition and I had no interest in lowering the car.
These completely transformed the drive and comfort of the car and removed the bangs and uncontrolled knocks and bounce that you are describing.
I then recently replaced the bottom front arms with superpro upgraded items to remove the roll from the bushes (which had actually allowed the arm to rub) and completely annihilated the creaking and grinding these factory bushes cause.
At the same time I installed H&R front and rear roll bars.
The car now drives unbelievably well. Actually not only retains the factory comfort levels but improves apon them in a way that can only be described as transformative.
The car glides over road undulations that would have felt like a crater before, without even noticing they are there.
The handling in corners is on a level with my wife’s ST250 and no longer try’s to push wide on roundabouts and tight bends.
The handling and ride comfort now feel controlled and safe. I’m no longer concerned about manhole covers or the front end washing out on me, especially in the wet, and winter driving in the dark is going to be so much more relaxed than it ever could have been before.
This isint so I can drive around like an R plater on coke either, it’s genuinely nice to just know everything is controlled and safe on leisurely drives and day trips out with my family, without having it ruined by what felt like the front end collapsing when driving over the slightest thing at all.

What he said. If you want to go for a slightly muted version I'd go for B6 shocks and the rear bar. Should give you 80% of what @UndertheRadar achieved.

Standard not dcc

On the Superb MK3, Bilstein B6 non-DCC are a monotube design, whereas Bilstein B6 with DCC are a twintube design.

Monotube is better than twintube, so it's a good job yours is not DCC.

However, if you want Bilstein B6 you might have to search using a similar VW Passat B8 model as Bilstein haven't listed them for the Superb MK3. This might just be an oversight on Bilstein's part because those who have fitted Bilstein B6 to their Superb MK3 generally seem pleased with them.

What model have you got? eg. Superb MK3 2.0TDI 150HP hatchback, DSG, standard ride height. no factory fitted towbar.

For that car Kilen/Lesjofors are suggesting 5Q0411105GM front springs and 3Q0511115AK rear springs.

I fitted bilsteins B6 to my 2.0TDI Combi 150hp and changed a lot the body control. It's even more confortable than with OEM suspension, as the rebounds of the stock shocks are terrible for the handling and for the ride quality. I was expecting them to be stiffer but they are not too stiff (wife didn't notice the change much). They control perfectly the body of my car now under bumps and high speed ondulations on the motorway. If I had to do it again, I would maybe at the same time change antiroll bars, to have a more agile handling. But as I'm not racing the Superb, it's fine.

In comparison, I also own a Mini Cooper R50 with Bilsteins B8 and Eibach and its REALLY harsh. Very fun to drive, but too stiff for a daily drive. I think the sweet spot is just the Bilsteins B6. If you don't mind losing comfort and also losing ride height (parkings, bumps, etc.), then go for B8+shorter springs.

There's no trace of engine code CRBL. Do you mean CRLB?

Kilen list the same 5Q0411105GM front springs and 3Q0511115AK rear springs for the Superb MK3 2.0TDI 150HP estate.

It probably best to find out what the car's build codes are, especially considering that there's an ebay seller who can supply them for about 3 Euros. Then you can find out what was factory fitted.

The Sportline might have come with lowered suspension.

Yes CRLB

Just ordered Bilstein B6 for my 280 combi. Went through Bilstein UK to get right parts. Local garage is going to fit them as soon as they arrive. Looking forward to getting rid of the bounce

I fitted the bilstein top mounts along with a new OEM bearing at the same time when replacing the B6’s in my own, to save any hassle.
The B6 will make a fantastic difference to the overall handling and drive of the car.

Hadn't thought about that. Do you know the correct parts, may aswell change these at the same time.

I don’t remember off the top of my head now, sorry.
The mounts were ordered directly from Bilstein and the bearings came from Dealer parts department (technically TPS).
I only replaced the fronts as the rears are completely different and were like new given the reasonably low mileage.
I found the new front lower arms to be fantastic upgrade, if your suffering from any knocks or creaks as well.

Could you tell me what parts did you order and from where please ?

From the start:

Bilstein B6 damptronic (DCC) shocks front and rear.
Bilstein front top mounts.
ordered direct from bilstein.
original springs were perfect and reused.
If I was doing it again I would still pick the OEM spring as it now rides perfectly without lowering, and allows comfort and handling equally, without compromising one or the other.

OEM bearings for front top mounts

front drop links

rear drop links

ordered from TPS which is who supplies dealer parts.

Front lower super pro arms TRC 1070

ordered from Progressive parts

front and rear H&R anti roll bars (set to stiff.)
ordered from H&R directly.

@UndertheRadar

I only have the front arms on hand at the minute. They are super pro TRC1070.
The rest I don’t remember or was ordered trade on my friends account.
I may have some part numbers on some of the receipts from the items I ordered directly but I’ll have to look tomorrow when I get the chance.
It’s all fitted to a 272.
my heads just not straight enough to look tonight as my TBI has been getting steadily worse since last Christmas and cognitive function this evening is horrendous.

After my trip to the continental Europe, and testing my 280PS estate on the autobahn, I have to say - suspension is a bit rubish at high speeds (120mph+). Stock BMW 5 series was able to "attack" bends and higher speeds than myself, as my car simply did not like to "turn". Not to mention it being very sensitive to side wind blows.

I am massively disapointed in the car in this regard. It behaved OK at 100-110mph, ok-ish at 110-120mph. The car has DCC and was driven in Sport mode.

I am seriously considering going K&W but the price...
