Google Maps not Speaking Directions via Infotainment

Featured Replies

As a Skoda newbie (2017 Octavia estate)  I was pleased how easily my phone paired with my car and received phone calls.

It does not however play the navigation directions from Google maps.

The phone is correctly paired and maps is set to play over bluetooth (works fine in my partner's Volvo).

I expected it to interrupt the radio with the navigation instructions but it doesn't.

Probably something simple but can't find any references.

Anybody?

It's an Amundsen system if that matters.

Have you also got "Play as Bluetooth phone call" set? I find this often gets cleared after a Google maps app update.

Thanks for the reply.

Can't see that setting in Maps Navigation Settings

I have Play Voice over Bluetooth and Play Voice during phone calls both of which are set.

Is that maybe an iPhone option (mine is Android)?

On mine the navigation instructions works over bt.

why don't you go through android auto? Is should work on a 2017 Amundsen

Pardon my ignorance but not aware of Android auto.

A quick google seems to suggest it was dropped in June last year in favour of some settings in Google Assistant

Is that not the case?

Yes, I have a iPhone.

Can't offer any advice on Android as I've never owned one.

Android Auto is very much still alive.

If you're connecting your Android phone to your Amundsen using a USB cable then you're using Android Auto!

I'm not using a cable and don't want to.

I'm connected via Bluetooth.

Have just done some messing in the car and under my phone the hands free calling icon is green but the bluetooth audio (A2DP) icon (musical note) is greyed out.

When pressed it appears to try and connect (flashing up a msg about possible confirmation required on phone) but nothing appears on phone and icon remains greyed out.

Not sure how to proceed so would be grateful if anyone recognises symptoms

I'm pretty sure that still means you're using Android Auto.

Is the phone properly paired with the car via Bluetooth? Worth checking the Bluetooth connections/setup menu on the Amundsen?

Can you play music from the phone onto the car?

The phone is paired in as much as phone calls (in and out) work fine.

I haven't tried playing music but the greyed out icon suggests that won't work.

Going into the developer options on my phone the bluettoth audio codec is set to 'use system selection (default)'.

If i tap it I could choose SBC, AAC, aptX audio, aptX HD, LDAC, aptX adaptive or aptX TWS+.

Does one of those match the A2DP protocoal of the Amundsen (and how would I find out other than by sitting in the car in the freezing cold and experimenting)?

A2DP is a Blutooth protocol to establish a connection, it's not related AFAIK to the audio codec used once that connection is established.

Having said that, I seem to remember that one of the codecs which the Amundsen supports is AAC (I believe there's a table on here and possibly in the Amundsen manual) that lists the supported codecs - which codec is currently selected on your phone?

I'm worried we might be "disappearing down a rabbit hole" here...

the phone currently justs says 'use system selection (default)' .

I'll try some of the others when I have a need to start the car 'cause not keen on just sitting woth ignition on in this current temperature.

I'll report back if I find anything useful

Just to clarify something.

Connecting via Bluetooth will not give you android auto (AA). You need a cable on your generation of car to get AA.

If you are listening to the car audio (radio, cd, etc.) then you won't get the navigation commands from your phone to play through the car when they kick in. You will need to be on media/Bluetooth for that. Then you won't be able to listen to radio.

Can we know why the reluctance to use a cable? AA really is quite good and you can listen to the cars audio sources while still having the maps in the screen. This should also then interrupt the audio with the nav instructions as you are hoping to get.

yes android auto on this generation needs the cable.

Just try to see if it works, from there you can start to investigate.

Android auto is really useful for google or waze navigation.

Give it a try

Given your info above I might go for the cable option...

In my partner's Volvo D40 (2013) the radio play quite happily and is interrupted by sat nav directions over bluetooth as and when so I rather assumed a much newer car would do the same and without the need for doing anything 'physical' like plugging the phone in (somewhere not easy to reach)  when I get into the car.

I don't want to stop having the radio on so i guess AA is my only option.

Seems like a backward step tech-wise but if it does what I require I suppose it's worth a go.

Does any of this explain why the bluetootth audio (A2DP) is greyed out?

OK I now have a cable that works for Android auto and have just tried it but when i play the test sound from google maps the instruction is inaudible (although it does correctly interrupt the radio).

I've tried turning phone volume up and made sure nothing is muted but to no avail so I'm guessing i have something wrong somewhere.

Grateful for any help but will pursue in daylight tomorrow otherwise.

TFYH

Try playing the test sound again and whilst it's playing turn up the volume on the infotainment (either on the dash or wheel).

Also Android Auto has three settings, Mute, Alerts Only and everything - Alerts and directions.

The volume setting on the phone doesn't affect android auto levels. It does when on pure bluetooth so you're not completely losing it.

If you have any music apps on your phone then try playing them through android auto and check the volume levels. If it's working on screen then it should be working for sound too.

Yes,

The head unit has seperate volume setting for the music and for announcements.

You can find the 2 dials in the volume settings or as suggested by @Cakemonsterturn the volume up when you have the announcement

Turning the sound up whilst nav instructions speaking solved the issue.

Still not wild about having to use a cable rather than wireless but at least it does what I want.

thanks all for your help

Try this....

AAWireless 2023

I bought this and it works a treat

Leave it plugged into the USB socket, load up the AA Wireless app and your phone automatically connects when you get in the car.

Looks very interesting thanks but at £60 I'll stick with the cable for now at least!

Having said that there are the usual cheaper Eastern knock-offs on eBay....

incidentally 1 or 2 reviews on Amazon (where not in stock at present) suggest it needs to be unplugged to stop battery wear.

Does that mean the USB AA slot is permanently live?

Mine is left in all the time without any problems. The battery does get used with the only sign that it takes longer until the stop-start kicks in.

However, when on holiday I disconnect from the USB socket.
