Retrofit heated steering wheel

Has anyone done this to a FL Superb? I have got a 2020 FL which obviously has the same steering wheel as the MK4 Octy but Im banging my head against the wall trying to figure out:

1. If I need a Squib and

2. What part number I need if I do.

I'm assuming I do, but all the ones I can find on fleabay for a Superb dont have the additional connector looking at the photos.

I initially bought the new steering wheel for the travel assist but I am old and have reynaulds in my hands and I want that sweet heat on my wheel and am trying to do it all in one hit.

So frustrating having the almost answers everywhere, there is one thread that lists all the variants of the squibs for LHD vehicles! 😭 I don't know how you lot find all your info!

I was going to buy an Octavia Mk4 squib, but then the Octavia thread on doing the retrofit says the Superb needs a different one, but is this different from the one that Mk3 Octavia's need when putting it on a pre FL Mk3 Superb?  I don't know!

So confused. If anyone has the answer or can direct me to where I can get it from I will be forever in your debt and my blue fingers will owe you a beer. I have ACC and a rear wiper.

It’s hard to answer without knowing what you currently have. Most likely, you need to look for the 5Q1 module, which comes with the switches. People do sell used ones separately, but there’s a risk they might not work. Find a set with the same functionality for the switches and heating support. Ideally, compare the PR codes.

Ok, here’s the result of my research: I ended up installing the 5Q1.

  1. 5Q0953569B — This variant is ambiguous. If the module is from VW, it does not include components for the third ACC stalk. The same applies to 5Q0953569A (this also concerns both A and B). It might be possible to solder the necessary components, but to be sure, it's better to get it assembled with the stalk.

  2. 5Q0953569C — Starting from 01/12/2019, the 5Q0953569B modules were replaced with 5Q0953569C, which were installed exclusively on Skoda. Apparently, this confusion became a problem for everyone, so they created a dedicated module for Skoda with support for the third ACC stalk.

  3. Transition to the new 5Q1 module — These began to be installed on facelift models and are no longer standalone "16 modules" but rather a "submodule" of the BCM. In the catalog, the stalk and the steering column module are listed together under a single part number.

After spending some time on the diagrams, the following differences were identified:

  • The 5Q1 module no longer receives the CAN Comfort connection.

  • An additional LIN bus is added to the BCM module at T73c/54.

  • Airbag contacts are now combined into the same connector as the others.

  • The transmission lock switch is now routed to BCM T73a/24.

This variant is possible only with newer BCMs. Visually, the necessary pins appear starting with version 5Q0937084CQ (installed from 01/06/2017). Whether it supports all functionality 100% — I cannot confirm.

What did you do exactly to fit 5Q1 ?

I have prefacelift and finding 5q0 module is quite difficult and pricey.

I bought 5q1. Done some research on wiring diagrams and I'm stuck there.

All looks great, thank you.

But there are couple of things I dont understand.

There are couple of wires in my 5Q0 16a connector that are not includet in the guide.

Pin 6, Pin 7, Pin 14 and Pin 16

This guide for Ignition lock doesnt say anything about that pins either. It only says something about some rotor inside? I dont realy understand that.

Can you help to clarify that please?

Thank you

In my case I have Kessy, so I didn't worry about option for vehicles w/o entry and start auth while preparing for this retrofit.

So, open ELSA/diagrams and find these wires

Connected everything and everything works apart from steering wheel heating. I have this fault on VCDS. Any ideas?

Which controller unit?

The only thing I can think of is BCM as my BCM didn't have pin 54 on t73c and my friend managed to add it from a donor BCM so the clock spring fully works.

I dont belive IT will work with a retrofitted pin. The low, mid, and high BCMs all have different firmware, part numbers, and functions.

Did you enable this adaptation in a clock spring?

The adjustment has nothing to do with the steering wheel heating fault.

Yes, it's enabled but in BCM. I checked it 3 times.

Dont mind ACC fault, its gone.

Another thing is that i didnt replace ignition switch like hkspb did in his tutorial here:

I made an adaptor to the old one

I am thinking about getting CQ BCM

Sorry to jump in here. I have a 2020FL model with Heated Steering

If I were to add DSG paddles, I assume it's a complete wheel swap. Can anyone advise a part number ?

Yeah, clock spring now submodule of a BCM, when you change adaptation it changes coding of a clock spring.

This guy had the same issue and it helped

I would try to buy another one, 5Q1 953 521 DH is not recommended, try to buy *LC

AFAIK, you can replace just wheel. They all almost same, choose what you like more with buttons you need.

btw, do you have last gen. of wheel or old one?

not very clear what they did exactly

Same adaptation I texted above

I believe it's the old one.

Just need to find the correct part number so.

Just as a quicky - have you been into long coding and changed the steering wheel type so the software knows what to talk to?

I have heating and while I was playing about with VCDS I ticked a different option on steering wheel type. Couple of months later when it starting getting cold, heating button doesn’t work at all. No display on the digi-dash. Took it to Skoda to be sorted under warranty, got a new wheel for it. Mechanic said it was odd as it was reporting up to temp. We left it at that.

Few months later, I remembered and thought I’d trial and error the steering wheel type option. Lo and behold it comes back. Software wasn’t expected a signal from that button and defaulted the temp to over the thermostat cut-off.

No errors, no codes, no light on the dash. Worth a punt.
