Push to talk on mobiles?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if this service will be available in the UK?

I know this service is used alot in the USA,but haven't heard of the service being introduced over here.

It will be available but not for a year or two. None of the networks are rushing out to introduce it as standard circuit switched voice calls are sufficient for most people's needs.

I thought T-Mobile had this on a certain Nokia phone.

Nokia N70 supports it I think, and I'm sure Orange were planning to offer the service very soon. Bit like the old video phones though eh?

Many phones e.g Nokia 5410, 6280 etc do have the functionality built in but no network has yet launched the service here in the UK. Perhaps they are only a few months away.

It's nothing like video calling which is something I use every week but I can understand your doubt.

I say screw that... the last thing we want is muppets shouting at each other "walkie talkie style"

My nokia has push to talk, but I have no idea what it is.

I meant that you need to know someone that has a compatible handset in order to use it yourself.............

That's right

I believe you have to subscribe to a service, as will your mates/work colleagues etc for it to work.

Watch CSI or American Chopper to see it in action. Looks useful for businesses etc, especially around a factory/shop environment.

Though Ch@v's in a shopping centre I could do without! Perhaps it will be limited to business customers?

Hewesy

Aside from the recent developments by major mobile manufacturers, I think there was a move towards "PTT" using a system called Tetra a few years back, but the company involved (Dolphin Telecoms, IIRC) went down the pan before they got very far...

Whisky Tango Foxtrot, are you recieving? over :P

Orange UK offered PTT on Treos about 2 years ago. I remember the Beta taking place but never heard about it again.

Tetra is a generic name for an infrastructure, not a system as such, used by the Police and soon by Fire and Ambulance also. The system used by the Emergency Services in the UK is called "Airwave". Dolphin tried to get a share of the civilian market but with very little success. It's digital trunk radio, whereas voice on mobiles is still analogue AFAIK. To talk to your mates you have to be in a "talkgroup", a number of which are configured for each user (read Police Force), plus some more generic ones called "hailing channels". You join a talkgroup (or are added to it) based on your role and location. Talkgroups can also be created dynamically for a specific group of users to talk where they are all attending the same incident, for example.

The handsets are also pretty different from mobiles, still quite a bit larger and chunkier, but they have to be since they are effectively "always on" and that chews up battery life. The software also sucks, in comparison with the stuff you're used to on your mobile.

My mate's got PTT on his Nokia 6230i - although it's not on mine. He's on Vodafone IIRC and I'm on T-Mobile. Don't know if it actually works as he's a bit technologically challenged and we don't know anybody else who has it !
