Engine running ''bongs''

Featured Replies

Hi, Is there anyway of turning the bongs off when opening the drivers door to remind me that the engine is running, Because it's getting on my nerves 😁

If you're doing something such as closing the garage door while the car is outside with the engine running, just close the driver's door or turn the engine off.  I can't immediately think of a reason to regularly leave a car with the engine running and the driver's door open.

I think that is one of the many annoying features that the European Union nanny state insists upon, and that's where we get our cars from.  At least its less of a pain in the arse than Lane Assist.

It's also a requirement in the USA and appears to be tied in with, initially automatics, and so may have started there.  A child or animal left in the car with the engine running could conceivably knock the auto selector from the park position to D or R seems to be the reason.  But anyone who leaves a car with the engine running and unattended is just asking for trouble, if only from someone jumping in and drivng it off.  If that happens, then your insurance is invalidated.

To my mind it makes sense to warn a driver that he or she is leaving the car with the engine running. No doubt complaints about nanny stateism were made when seat belts and air bags were introduced.

They were indeed and the open sports car fans said they wouldn't wear seatbelts because it was safer not to as in the case of an accident the y would be thrown clear of the car before it burst into flames.  (Statistical note: very few car crashes result in a vehicle bursting into flames.)

Lots of bongs and safety features were not actually required by the legislation in the EU or now EU & UK, but were for New Type Approved vehicles so were standard factory features pre required.

Now in 2024 there are plenty that are legislated as having to be standard on New Cars, not just New Type Approved ones.

It is illegal to leave your car unattended with the engine running, certainly your insurance company would not like it either.

It is also not very Green. The bongs could save you money in fines or a stolen car.

On the Kings Highway in the UK illegal.

You will see Police and Emergency Services doing it.  They must be exempt.     But yes even on a drive / private parking it might get pinched.

It is rather different in Bristol from many other places where running an ICE vehicles engine.

Even Perthshire where the Council are always on about cars idling when attended they sometimes ignore the Green Councillors or the Scottish Green Party and realise Location location location.

There may an adaptation you can change with VCDS, but not sure which module it would be in.

Do people really need a bong to tell them that their engine is running?

I thought I was hard of hearing but.....................................

If they cannot hear the engine then they may not hear the bong, a slap in the face with a wet kipper might get their attention.

A bong for leaving lights on, now that is sensible.

Petrol engines can be very quiet.

That is certainly true of my Kamiq, especially when drive is disconnected.

I find I have to glance at the rev counter, the engine on my Kamiq is so quiet,

leaving the car a couple of bongs as a gentle reminder does not offend.

And my 2020 SEL has exactly that.

If you turn off the engine before exiting the vehicle, the warning will not sound.

Or get out of the passenger side😁

Is the feature not in the software because some cars in the range have stop/start, the engine could be stopped but ignition still on, leaving a danger that the car will re-start when no-one is there.

With stop/start, removing your foot from the brake pedal restarts the engine.  Also, the engine appears to restart if the volts on the car drop, so opening the driver door and so activating the interior lights would possibly set off the bongs.

Ah, mine is a DSG.

Interestingly, if the driver's door is opened when the ignition is switched on and the engine is not running, there is a warning sound for this too, plus a message display.

As far as I am aware, if the stop/start has stopped the engine, the engine restarts on opening the door.

On my SEL 1.0 DSG Kamiq, it is not often that the stop/start comes into operation, usually in town traffic after a longish run.  However, I have noticed that the start operation can take place without me removing my foot from the brake pedal.  For example, when stopped at traffic lights in a queue if I operate the turn indicator, the engine restarts, presumably because of the drop in voltage brought about by the turn indicator operating bringing the alternator into use.  This would also explain why opening the driver's door restarts the engine

On my Karoq, if the engine stopd in a traffic queue, the engine restarts if the vehicle in front moves.
