Which SD Card?

Featured Replies

I want to get a larger SD card for my Amundsen unit so I can install one of the larger maps.

My current card is a VW Navigation AS Europe 1 card 3G0 919 866 BC.

I understand I need a compatible VW/Skoda card, can anyone advise which 32GB card I can use?

Many thanks.

You can only use genuine Skoda cards. The Nav knows whether they're genuine or not from the CID (Card IDentification) that is stored on the card. Needing a specific card doesn't make sense to me as the maps are freely downloadable.

There's plenty of sellers online, both new and used, if you search Skoda maps sdcard.

Thanks guys, ordered one now.

Well that got complicated fast.

So I ordered and received a genuine Skoda card, plugged it in and the system said no map data. I checked the card and it had full map data on it.

I spoke with card supplier who told me to check various things and do a reset, no joy.

In the end I sent photos of my system screen and memory card. My memory card was actually a VW card and the Skoda card was not compatible with my Skoda head unit!

They sent me a VW card which works perfectly. I can only assume that the head unit has been changed at a VW dealers at some stage.

Sorry that happened, i thought i had sent a link to a VW sd card.

The details you gave of the card you had was VW

No worries, I never even twigged mine was a vw card in a Skoda! I just assumed they were interchangeable turns out there not.

Anyhow all sorted and we’ve added to the pool of knowledge.

I have an SD slot in my head unit so brought a card for my make and model. It arrived yesterday and this morning I installed it. There is no SAT NAV button on my head unit, and after installing the card no difference has been made. Have I made a mistake or does it actually do something I am unaware of.

You have a Bolero which does not support satalite navigation...

Adding the SD card won't change this 😞

Oh, oki doki and thank you Sir. I still have satnav via my Android usb connection so the only loss is a few quid spent needlessly on the card.

I too have a Bolero in a 2018 Octavia.  Please forgive an idiot question from a non-techie here, but... what does the SD card allow me to do if I get one? Can I load my personal music tracks onto it and play them through the system?

Don't bother getting a Skoda SD card, that's only needed for the sat nav database which as you have a Bolero is pointless.

Just use any SD card and put your music on it.

Thanks, that's useful to know.
And then it's straightforward to use via the infotainment screen, is it? ( Self-confessed dinosaur who's never tried loading music from SD cards before, writing here!)

Best way is to create a directory structure in the SD card root directory of:

\Artist\Album\Tracks(1...n)

I rip my CDs to 320kbps MP3 files using this structure then copy them to the SD card.

Then on the infotainment screen you see a list of Artists, click on an Artist and you see a list of their Albums, click on an Album and you see a list of Tracks - click on one and it plays.

When setting up the card, things to consider

Files that are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology can-
not be played back by Infotainment.

After formating the card create a folder on it and put your music in the folder as described by @PetrolDave above

Just as a foot note to the above, I have the same setup with no sat nav, however if I plug in my Android phone with a USB cable I can access sat nav from my phones Google maps. I can also access all my music stored on my phone, which I can also do using the blue tooth connection. I did buy a card mistakenly thinking it would add sat nav, (It won't) but as above wasn't needed anyway.

Thanks @PetrolDave and @Stonekeeper you've answered my next intended questions about format and file type even before I asked 😄
