Possibly a silly question about a spare wheel

Recommended Posts

2020 Superb 1.5 DSG..

I may have found an 2016 Octavia steel wheel in our works car park. I may have tried it in the boot to see if it fits.... it does.

BUT, whilst the PCD and centre bore are OK and the tyre is about 5% different overall circumference will it work?.. my question is will a 15inch wheel fit over the discs etc?

Has anyone tried it?

Asking for a friend who didn't save it from the car park.20240223_174436.thumb.jpg.c3aa559066ad7a93e72be90e17e213b4.jpg

Looks like you may be borrowing it. Why not jack the car up and try it. If you have a decent jack and a gun for the bolts you could have it back on its feet in 15 mins.

I know,  but that means getting into the shed,  finding the trolley jack,  and doing stuff......

Busy this weekend, not the best time to buy the car,  but will have a look soon if no one has a definitive answer.  Very used to modding the odd car although it was 8 years ago I let my Vec C go. God I miss that 1750-3000 rpm kick in the back of that dirty derv..... happy days

No idea if it’ll fit, so where’s the car park? 😂 Seriously, someone will be along who’ll confirm!

I'll arrange an engineers meeting if you like? 15 SE L Octavias to relieve of their bodies.

On the Superb MK3, a 15" rim won't clear the front or rear brake calipers. This is because the smallest brake discs that the Superb MK3 uses is 312x25mm front and 300x12mm rear.

Skoda do supply a 205/55R16 6.5Jx16 ET46 5/112 57.1 spare wheel from an Octavia MK3 for the Superb MK3. However, this is clearly an economy measure and not a very good choice for owners who are a little more discerning than Skoda.

As you can see in the chart below, the 205/55R16 is a whopping 4.9% smaller than 215/60R16.

Outside diameter of tyre

215/60R16 664.4mm

205/55R16 631.9mm (4.9% smaller outside diameter than 215/60R16)

So back to the car park with the wheel!!! Thank you @Carlston the knowledge I needed. My friend will look for an alternative.

@Fatfred

i'm sceptical about 15" disc fitment even on rear axle,

as example, rear calipers of 310mm brake discs on 272/280 are bigger than front calipers of 310mm brake discs on all rest versions,

i haven't measured 298mm rear vs 310 front calipers

Yeah,  i'd read that.  I'm not unhappy fitting a space saver and that will definitely fit in the boot.

The question was whether the 15in would clear the discs.... didn't want to spend of I didn't have to,  that's all.

Thanks

Hi Carlston,

I had one of these for my outgoing Superb Mk2, I presume it will be fine to keep it for my new Mk3?

Better that than buying a new one.  I might buy a new Skoda tool set though.

However, Kopacek stock a kit for an 18" spare and a kit for a 16" spare.  This might be a stupid Q, but how would the kits vary?

I mean the jack has to be rated the same to lift the car, and the bolt sizes are the same in each case etc.  Are the tools the same, its just the size of the foam holder / wheel insert which is different?

Cheers!

I suggest you stick to the genuine Skoda jack and foam kit. As well as the jack locating correctly on the jacking point, they aren't expensive. So many of these universal jacks will take the paint off and cause rusting on the jacking point...so best avoided.

The jack and foam kit for the Superb MK3 (not 272/280HP or hybrid models) has an OEM part number of 3V0093860D and is listed at 2199CZK (about £75.54) on the "skoda eshop cz" website. I doubt they ship to the UK being a Czech website but you should be able to order it from any VAG parts department using the 3V0093860D part number. This kit will include everything except for the actual spare wheel.

If you have a 16" Superb MK2 wheel it probably has a specification of 205/55R16 fitted to a 7Jx16 ET45 5/112 57.1 rim. This would have an actual inflated width of about 220mm, not the 205 that you see on the tyre's sidewall. It might be the case that a tyre with an actual inflated width of more than 215mm will lift the carpet in the boot, but you might get lucky (or maybe not) with this 220mm actual inflated width spare tyre because the ET45 offset is 4mm more than the 205/65R16 fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET41 rim that one owner tried and succeeded with, ie. it didn't lift the carpet. A 205/65R16 fitted to a 6.5J rim has an actual inflated width of 215mm. The standard 16" wheel on the Superb MK3 is 215/60R16 fitted to a 6.5Jx16 ET41 rim, and that has an actual inflated width of 221mm and does raise the carpet slightly when fitted in the spare wheel well.

Hi Carlson,

Many thanks for this informative reply, much appreciated.

I checked and the tool kits Kopacek stock are original skoda ones, the 16" version displays the exact part number you quoted.  They list it at 99 euros.

https://www.kopacek.com/skoda/superb-iii/superb-iii-original-skoda-kit-for-spare-wheel-change-16

Interesting what you say about the Mk2 wheel possibly being a bit wider - I cant see anything about the rim dimensions on it, its only has stickers warning you to stay under 50 mph when the wheel is fitted.  Is it possible to check somehow?

I will give it a shot however, even if its not perfect, it might do as a stop gap!

Cheers!

GS
