  • From the oxidisation it actually looks like it was already fractured all the way around and it would not have taken a lot to finish it off.   I had the rear wiper on my MK1 Octavia vandalise

GOOD IDEA

Personally I would contact the seller to make sure there isn't a mistake in the pricing (stupid algorithms or so called artificial "intelligence") or if they are just profiteering (proper USA capitalism, until one of the big American motor corporation gets a bail out from Government money).

At one time there were certain original new wheel bearings available from one source only, they charge £120, but there were some NOS (new old stock) about sometimes, an owner with the facilities converted other bearings and had them tested by other owners and then made a batch of 100 (or 200, I forget) for £45 retail but they sold very slowly as "classic" car owner generally are very tight-fisted and never use their cars so still preferred to buy the cheaper bearings (about £20 or less) that often didn't fit correctly so would wear very quickly and cause issues.

Sod's Law when I needed the bearings the high quality set were sold out but Instead of paying £120 I searched eBay and got sets at various prices, one set at £15, most I paid was £40, all within a week or two of starting the search.

ETA: sometimes you can find bargains on eBay by misspellings or looking for other less popular cars that the car fits.  As just one example a Bosch rotor arm that was fitted to various marques and models was advertised by one seller under different makes and models of car with different part numbers and the exact same rotor arm was at different prices, from the same supplier remember, some £15+, I got a couple for £5 by using a different parts number to those and for £5 each, genuine Bosh and Beru.

Shop around as much as you can, don't be too strict with part name, description and numbers.

I found the pictures from the old factory motor,

the next (VIKA) was different in many things.

Obviously it's only images on a screen and the factory motor is 25 years old and some use but that looks like it might be able to be repaired  and cleaned and lubricate for more life, as you have found before cleaning and fresh new lubrication can help even working parts (it's why you change you engine oil and filter every year at least).

Would have been interesting to compare the internals of that modern crap one.

The thread is almost completely damaged.

I forgot that, but we went through some fixes for that, pity you couldn't use some (or all) of the internals from the old in the crap new one but I suppose there are too many minor differences, I expect you were looking to see if the burnt out bits could be swapped.

But such are the joys in today's life.

I don't trust any more anything from that VIKA motor, not even a washer.

Both motors are recycled now. ;)

I have found this video ''too late'' but i think it's good to be here in case of another member wants to remove his own rear wiper motor.

Personally i never removed the Securing plate and the Latch (1:43-2:11), no needed.

Probably cost more to have original one repaired, than cost of a new unit.

Also the motors have plastic gears inside, which can be easily sheared of their shafts, so yes you would have to be careful if buying a 2nd hand motor from a  vehicle breakers.

This is what happens when you try to use rear wiper when it's frozen to screen.

Disintegration of plastic gear.

Oh dear. At least it didn't go up in smoke or flames.

Oh, sad news.

if you can not find new or used one you can 3D print it.

I wondered if 3d printing would be possible, but surely having the original gear scanned, then printed, will cost more than a replacement.

So I tryed to purchase the one from megaparts.eu I mentioned earlier but they cancelled my order.

Just can't bring myself to pay £30 plus postage for one of the eBay ones, which probably will be broken anyway.

I said it because i have seen it here in Greece with a similar gear from Mercedes.

The mechanic itself show this to camera, he said "i couldb't find it so i 3D print it".

You can order printing in ABS plastic or metal.

I've ended up butchering a front motor for its gear, because all the used rear motors online already have broken gears.

It required some cutting of the gears, but once cut down I threadlocked it onto the rear motor's wiper spindle.

Well done, the grease isn't too much?

An update:

The new gear started to slip on the shaft, so I've now drilled it and inserted a pin to stop this.

IMG20251122173003.jpg

It has introduced some free play / backslash, so the wiper now doesn't do a full speed of the rear window.

I would clean it fill it up with resin drill it heat the shaft and reinsert it
