Retrofitting rear view mirror USB port

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I am now the proud owner of a year-old 2023 Superb Mk3 hatchback (1.5 TSI SE Technology). It does not seem to have the USB-C port on the windscreen behind the rear view mirror (just a little plastic blank where the USB-C port should be). So, the question is - how easy is it to retrofit the port and has anyone done it?

Thanks

Chris

I had not installed my dash cam because I didn't want a wire hanging and didn't want to do a mirror tap.

If anyone has any helpful advice on doing this retrofit it would be appreciated.

I would b very surprised if u have the wiring for the USB port location on the rear view mirror.

In theory, in order to add an additional USB port, that can b seen/used by the MIB infotainment unit will require a USB hub module.

Hence u would need:-

- a USB hub

- additional USB port

- USB hub wiring

- USB port wiring

Or is it just a USB power supply, 5VDC only? Taking power from the 12V rail in the Rear View mirror unit?

The USB port up by the mirror - if factory fitted - is just power, not data. No link to infotainment unit. No need for data/infotainment connection given it’s just there to power a dashcam.

Ah yes, that would make sense for it to b power only!

That would make the retrofit a whole lot easier then 👍

depends on for what it required,

if dashcam, then look also to one expensive alternative

(haven't tested by self)

strange, there isn't developed any third side device, which would connect to built in camera's wires in parallel

Thanks but these look even uglier than a regular dash cam. I’ll stick with trying to retrofit the usb port.

It’s quite a cheap option, £60,  have it on my 2023 model. So I am wondering if Skoda would think it worth having two wiring looms according to whether the option is selected. Maybe the wiring is there and it just needs the USB socket? I am just guessing! Perhaps you can log onto ERWIN and check the wiring diagram for your vehicle?

Exactly. I’m hoping that all I need is either 5E3035954 or 5E3035954E (haven’t worked out the difference in the parts yet) which appears to be the missing port, with a plug that either plugs onto the loom or into a power distribution box either behind the trim on the windscreen or behind the courtesy light. But this is why I was hoping someone had already attempted it and could share some guidance. I’m surprised I seem to be the first to want to do this.

I'm currently in the process of working out how to wire up my two dashcams & subwoofer.

I also have the USB-C blanking plug in my mirror housing, and this morning I have taken a look at the fuse-box behind the glovebox and I have noted a fuse position 37 specifically for the mirror USB power supply.

It don't have a fuse of course but is also missing the wire that would take the power to the socket, it only has the feed voltage connection, ignition controlled so I think I will use it for my front dash cam, I cannot see the point in taking the mirror apart now in the hope the power is sitting their waiting because the wire is not in the loom.

I had a friend that worked in the Honda plant doing dashboards and it was very normal to have different looms depending on spec, so I guess it's common practice, annoying that is.

BTW the Fuse position 47 for the rear-wiper I don't have on my car is just the same, the feed is there but the wire that would go to the wiper is not, it's a great location for my sub/ rear dashcam feed as it's also ignition controlled. I think I'll use for the wire I need to run to the back of car.

These MoCo's save every penny.

@Tankdave - I've used the following Fuse locations for my dashcam and TPMS retrofit.

#16 - Phonebox (permanent)

#30 - Boot 12v socket (permanent)

#47 - Rear Wiper (switched)

HI guys,

- I have tried to add USB-C power socket into interrieor mirror.
-  power source 12V - I have used an empty position in fusebox nr. 37 - reserverd for USB-charging - interior mirror (see pic.)

- As cabeling i used 1,5mm2 cable. I used route threw front pillar and than under upholstery (above the driver)

- after disassembling mirror plastic covers, I found out, that there is small plastic blind hole. After choose out there is nice hole for USB-C

- I have used USB-C female plug that a found in my supplies. I only cutted black plastic with knife to look as original plastic blind hole.
- I have not used any glue, just plugged in and it fits.

- All cables interconnections are above lighting - there you dont need unscrew any screwdrivers, just pull out lighting module

- I used DC-DC step down converter (8-22V) to 5VDC / 5A.

- if somebody want to use higher voltage (for example 9, 12 or 20V) should use DC-DC converter with communication module to comunicate the right voltage with device. And also USB-C socket with 4 wires (i have used socket with only 2 wires for power)

Good work and thank you for the write-up.

I’m guessing this means there isn’t a power source already located behind the panel; and that wiring wasn’t included in the standard loom.

Although I have yet to pluck up the courage to try and remove the trim around the windscreen sensor, my belief is still that you should only need either 5E3035954 or 5E3035954E (still not clear on the parts difference), and this should just plug onto the loom in that area. I've been looking at some Russian sites where someone has done just such a retro fit on a Kodiaq that has the same setup as the Superb, and it seems to be both straightforward, and the power connector for the USB adapter is present.

In my opinion there is no wiring included in standard loom if it is not a part of the vehicle's equipment at the time of manufacture. The factory saves money wherever possible.

- A sign of this is the absence of a fuse and also the absence of a cable outlet under the fuse location.

- I am basing my findings on the facts of my vehicle. (it was manufactured for German market)

- i think, if you are little bit skillful, it is not difficult to realize your own cabling. After cabling is done, only you need to connect part 5E3035954 or separated DC-DC converter and own USB-C plug

- I didn't have information about part 5E3035954 until now. It can greatly facilitate the retrofitting of the mirror USB. I think you only need a 12V power source in the mirror area with a separate fuse.

- I didn't think that there is any difference between 5E3035954 or 5E3035954E. My local seller offer this part under this two markings. (https://www.skoda-parts.com/spare-part/5e3035954e-usb-c-connector-skoda-44696.html)

Did you open up the cover yet to see if there is 12V to tap into? I'm looking to do the same in my Octavia.
