Self levelling rear lights? MOT failure.

Featured Replies

I have just failed my MOT because apparently the rear nearside tail lamp on my late MK2 Superb Laurin & Klement saloon has failed and isn't auto levelling.

I am confused as I have never even heard of this as a feature. Scanning the car with Carly shows no codes relating to the lights at all.

Is this a thing? Is it a common thing? I am hunting around on Google and finding absolutely nothing about self levelling rear lights. I would appreciate any advice here as my MOT is up in 5 days 😞

Sounds like someone has mistyped your fail certificate.

Can you post a photo, with fail code?

Nevermind. I realise now after more reading, this is referring to the level sensor on the rear of the car. I will get it sorted out! Cheers.

Could do with a comma between Rear and Headlamp, to be fair!

Well that and the guy in Kwik Fit genuinely seemed to think it meant the tail lights, hence my sheer confusion! 🙂

Might be worth having a look underneath and seeing if it's just seized up or stiff.

Yeah I need to jack it up and have a look 🙂 even if it needs swapping it can't be a bank busting part in terms of price..

TBF I would have read it as "tail light self levelling system" had I not known that there is no such thing.

Well despite being a nearly 10 year old car, I remain surprised at the tech it has.. park assist, digital TV tuner, etc etc.. I was in disbelief that the tail lights were possibly self levelling but I didn't entirely want to discount it 😆

@Chicane-UK: The problem is most likely the level sensor mounted to the lower control arm of your rear-left wheel. The hinge points of these sensors tend to rust and seize. New sensors are not very expensive, but you need to calibrate the head light level afterwards.

Thanks @andrehj

I ordered a new Febi sensor which came today but found the sensor itself on the car was in good shape and it was just the ball joint itself which had seized up and the rod had broken. I simply unbolted the broken rod and bolted the new one on (as it was all the same length, fitment, etc) so in theory shouldn't need to do a sensor calibration? I've got the MOT retest booked in for Thursday..

How accurately can you measure the lengths of both rods?

I put them side by side and they appeared to be basically the exact same thing.

But if the lights need calibrating then so be it. Annoyingly I don't have VCDS and I should imagine Skoda would charge a crazy amount to just run a headlight calibration.

@Chicane-UK If the rods are the same length, you don't need any calibration.

Where do you buy them?
