Gearbox fault on startup and Cruising speeds

Featured Replies

For the past few months I have been trying to get a Gearbox fault diagnosed and fixed on my 63Reg skoda octavia. It's very intermittent i can go 1000 miles with no issue then it comes back. When I start the car some mornings I get Gearbox fault(P283C). I have also had the same fault while driving on the motorway. It varies what gears I have once the fault appears. If it faults while driving I have 2, 4, 6 and R. But if It faults on startup I only have 2nd.

I have had the Gearbox stripped and rebuillt with new bearing and clutch pack. And it worked for about 2.5 weeks before the problem resurfaced. I have taken it back and they plug diagnostics in clear faults, run a auto Gearbox check and it works. Then gradually over a few weeks the shifts get clunky then the fault returns. I have also had new battery fitted to no avail.

I have seen other forum posts with very similar cases but no resolution or fix posted on the posts.

What engine do have?

So the DSG is a DQ200 seven speed dry clutch unit?

  • Author

Yeah that's the one. The one I shouldn't of bought🙄

Did the car ever get the Software Update which was the Recall Action on some / many from 2013-2015 DQ200,s which started in 2017.

Service Campaign / Recall Action '34H5'  there should be a sticker in the spare tyre well.

The repair work might not have been required if the issue was the MCU / Accumulator / pressure/ leak.

P283C     Shift Fork 'C' position

Shouts Mechatronic to me. You've had everything else repaired.

I have the 1.6tdi as well, so I share your pain. The DQ200 is a dog.

Mine has given me no trouble at all.

I fear it maybe is the mechatronic but if its that how come the car drives fine with no issues for 100s of miles then gives up for a day. I will look into wether it's been updated.

It just not a good box it's very low budget and slow to react.

That's not my experience.  The DQ200 in our Polo GTI is a peach, and just as quick as the DQ250 in our Golf GTI in terms of reaction times.  I know plenty have their problems, and I'd still choose a DQ250 over a DQ200, but they're not all bad.  Not gloating, it's just the three DQ200's I've known for years have all been good.

@Gaz

Different software for the DQ200 DSG with your 1.8 TSI 192 ps GTI with supposedly 250 Nm but the Manual has 320 Nm.

VW Kidology. Your car seemingly heavier but actually quicker than the lighter more powerful manual.

The 1.6TDI has the same sort of issue as the 1.4 TSI Twincharger 180 ps had with the DQ200 DSG.

All searches that I've done point toward the Mech being at fault, however as yours is a 2013 and a DQ200, has it ever had a Mech oil change? It won't have been done during a standard Skoda service as it's listed not required, sealed for life ( or words to that effect ).

IMO it needs to get done in line with service schedules listed for other VAG DQ transmissions. Mine came out as a brown goo rather than a green liquid and frustratingly the filter is internal to the mechatronic so it would require disassembly in order to change/clean it.

The drain & refill procedure is not particularly difficult and there are a few youtube videos showing how it can be done. Just be sure that it's the DQ200 version you watch.

This may not be the 'fix' but it will do no harm and is a cheap to do. The fluid is only about £20 and about 1 - 2 hrs labour.

Yeah I will contact the garage that did the gearbox work and see what they say I know they changed the oil in the box but don't see a filter on my receipt. Does the gearset share oil with the mechatronic? My knowledge of the DQ200 is very poor.

The DQ200 is not very poor.  There can be issues. Too many do  not know what they are doing or speaking about.

World Wide recall 2009-2012 that excluded Europe who got a Service campaign from 2014.

Synthetic oil change to mineral and a software update. '34F7'.

2017 the Service Campaign started in 2017 on , 2013-2015,s '34H5' Sofrware update.   Now recalls 3 times in Australia on them, some up to 2016.

And there are 2 oils, in the MCU and in the box.

Too many have no idea how to correctly fit a New MCU, oil filled first, or a refurbished.  That includes Main Dealers techs in lots of cases.

Watch the Youtube vids by the Professionals, the companies that do the Repair / Upgrade Kits and the Refurbing of MCU,s.

Lots of people paid a lot for parts and work when it was the fork selectors that were the issue.

I was told a check for Accumulator is to start the car and instantly try to select drive and if the pressure has leaked or Accumulator is failing it won't allow you to select drive until it's has pressure. I can instantly select drive and pull off.

@Kjohnson01  & who told you that?

They will know more than me then.   They will know what is wrong i assume.

I do not know what is actually wrong, but i know you paid to get it fixed and it is not fixed.

@Ootohere

I was told this by a Automatic Gearbox specialist that i took it too for diagnosis. They had the car for 4 days after the other garage had carried out the work. Couldn't get it to fault. Then it faulted since I have been using the car several times but I'm 2hrs away from the specialist so I have to clear the error to take the car too them, to be able to drive safely.

They told me they have seen the same issue on a DQ200 before that I have. And that they replaced the MCU, TCU and it still faulted the guy was a taxi driver so sold the car and they never got to the bottom of it. Which why they haven't wanted to do anything till I have researched or found out if anyone has solved it before.

There is several threads that match my issue but very few post if or how they solved it.

I'm determined to fix it. But I don't have any MCU specialist near me at all. I'm Lincoln based
