Superb MK3 longevity - opionions/experiences

Featured Replies

Hello all - some background: I've got a MK3 Superb 2016. It's the 150BHP 2.0TDI. Purchased in 2021 for £9900 on 53K miles, currently on 120K miles. I have a 40 mile commute, mostly motorway/A roads, resulting in annual mileage of ~20k miles. Well maintained - oil changes every 10k miles (garage) , filters etc when req'd (myself). Redex regularly. Timing/waterpump done at 58K as the 5yr mark was up and the waterpump was playing up too.

Question is that I am weighing up whether to run it into the ground or upgrade. I do love the car, it's never missed a beat and so much space, reliable, comfortable etc. But I'm getting bored and I'm hankering for an A5 coupe 🤦🏻. But with the price of used cars, it's difficult to justify the spend. What would you guys do and what issues would you expect in the near future?? Clutch and turbo are the things that spring to mind. Thanks in advance.

Car prices are ridiculous - you’d get a good price for yours but you’ll be paying extra on top for another.

the newer car won’t have the same big money maintenance jobs needed but is the difference in price to up grade or do the work on yours, worth it? Only you can decide.

I’d say run it into the ground but only fix what’s needed + oil change yourself.

The cambelt is now every 10 years with no mileage limitations

I''ve never quite understood the statement "run it into the ground". Every problem with a car is fixable - just look at Car SOS, or the Ford Model T's still in existence. The question should be "How much will I be prepared to spend fixing an expensive problem on a car that is "old" but is otherwise perfectly serviceable, until the next expensive problem crops up?" It is a question that only you can answer, but you will have to ask it of yourself every time something needs doing, which will probably be bigger and more expensive each time as the car ages.

Source? As far as I know the interval has changed to no years and 140k depending on who you talk to. Some dealers are even saying no mileage limit. The time period is definitely the one that is dropped though unless you have other info.

My 2016 2.0 TDI with DSG is on 176,000 miles.  Like you, a large proportion of my journeys are motorways and A roads.  IMHO these type of journeys are less harmful to the car.  I carry out all my own maintenance except the DSG oil & filter change and cam belt.  I ensure all the maintenance items are carried out well before they are due (i.e. oil & filter change every 9,000 miles). I cannot afford to change the car but in my view, better the devil you know etc. I intend to keep the car until it (or me) becomes terminal.

I’d say keep it…..but, if you want an A5 get one, you’re only here once.

I bought the dealer's ride in 2017 and, except for a couple of trim problems, it has not given me any problems. Best car I've ever had. I'll run it until Mayor Khan legislates it off the street. Or insurance gets to be a problem. (I just had my long time insurer refuse to reinsure me. No claims, just getting too old, I guess.) I'm happy to stick with the devil I know...

Anyway, the real issue is: is money burning a hole in your pocket? I like the A5, but I think Škoda has a better service record than Audi (What Car?)

Interesting, I find myself in a similar position looking at other cars now and getting a bit restless after seven years of ownership. I've been looking at a couple of EVs which feel like a quantum leap in terms of technology and performance.  Yet every time I get back into the Superb I am struck by just what a brilliantly resolved package it is, the ergonomics are brilliant and everything just falls to hand, it does everything so well and is without like the best car I've ever owned.  I would suspect that the novelty of a new car would wear off soon and I would miss so much of what is good about the Superb.

Tread carefully!

Had my L&K iV for four and a half years. Only just sorted out the chain of errors, mainly infotainment and sat nav, some parts failures (extended warranty). Mind you, I've changed garages, and the first seemed a bit between the curve, maybe could have been sorted sooner. So, I'm back in love and it's a keeper!
