Navigation Driving me Mad......

Featured Replies

My 32 month old 280 Estate, only ever used on fine weather high days and holidays is driving me mad.

The navigation reception often refuses to behave - it has too many 'off' moments when locating my position and staying locked on is just not possible.

Sometimes it takes 10 miles to lock on from start-up - other times it's ready almost instantly - Other times when the road layout is complicated it gets confused and might take several miles to find itself again.

Often it can be 50 miles out, often in the sea, other times when it's confused by complicated junctions or loss of signal in multi-storeys etc it settles down to any road nearby - just not the road I'm on.

Curious thing is that whatever is causing the confusion not only affects the Skoda Nav but my iphone too, Google maps, Waze, Apple maps - all get lost.

I've had it looked at by the dealer but, not unexpectedly 'no fault found, we can't replicate it sir'! As I drove out the dealership car park the system was clearly lost but when I fetched someone out to witness it , all was well again.

I found something (internet) similar on a VW claiming all was fixed by disconnecting the car WiFi and using a cable - it seemed to work but the next time I was out the confusion was back again.

It's quite irritating when it gets lost inasmuch as the speed alert believes I'm on the ghost road and is forever going off.

I'm getting near to the end of my warranty so I'd like to get it fixed but it's so unpredictable and fickle - anyone?

Hang on, so if you’re at home and on your phone then map apps on your phone cannot pinpoint your location?

Or is it phone apps cannot pinpoint location once connected to the car?

Home is fine, in our Karoq is fine - but in the Superb it's a lottery inasmuch as phone apps in car the will sometimes connect fine but other times, no chance. And when Waze Apps etc are disoriented so is the Skoda MIB system.

It doesn't appear to be caused by the iphone because I've had the good lady disconnect and turn off the phone fully and still the MIB unit is lost....!

Ah okay, so yeah sounds like issue with car then.

Whenever it does it film it on your phone, then get it booked in and show them the videos.

The GPS is in the shark fin attends on the roof, Skoda label it as GNSS

I suspect they’ll need to change that or check its wiring at the minimum.

I think I remember reading that despite being connected using CarPlay/Android Auto, the position is dictated by the car, not the phone. So I think this comes down to either:

- MIB software version, or

- GPS aerial giving up the ghost.

Mine is a marginally-older hatchback and had similar experiences to yours (although I would also lose the emergency call function and the Columbus would be garbage) when I first picked it up (6months old) but Skoda updated the software and everything has been sorted since then.

I had this problem happening once or twice, but I noticed if if I "reset" the Android auto stops doing it. Also, I prefer to use the cable - I have a phone cover that does not allow wireless charging.

In my case, i also noticed this affects only the phone-driven navigation (like Waze or Gmaps), whereas the in-car works perfectly. I always assumed it was a phone issue, or comms between the phone and the car.

To quickly and easily identify the issue you could purchase a stand alone GPS antenna with a Fakra (?) connector and connect this to your head unit. Bypassing the roof mounted unit.

Eventually got this sorted - shame the dealer dismissed my concerns 2 years ago - new Online Services Controller was needed - apparently over £1k just for the part.

Ouch; on warranty though right? Glad it’s sorted either way. So much better when it’s a reliable system!
