Buzzing, rattling sound from passenger seat at high speeds

Featured Replies

I can't seem to pinpoint the source of an annoying noise on a one year old 280 PS Mk3.

The noise starts at 130km/h / 80mph and gets louder as the speed increases. I'm in Germany so these speeds are not uncommon.

It's a kind of high pitched buzzing or rattling sound coming from the passenger seat (car is left hand drive). I'm attaching a video where it can be heard.

Things I've checked:

* center console (empty)

* glovebox (empty)

* under the seat, seat rails, between seat rails and floor - no loose items

* styrofoam cover for module under the seat - removed it, wiggled it around, no change

* passenger door pocket (empty)

I don't have a passenger and this only happens at high speeds so unfortunately it makes pinpointing this hard since I can't just listen for it precisely in the area it seems to be coming from.

Has anyone had something similar or does anyone have suggestions on what to check next?

Must admit I can’t hear much

Does it happen when there’s a passenger sat in the seat?

Also have you tried moving the seat all the way forward or back? Just wondering if there’s something in the rails rattling

Next time your out, drive with the glovebox open and see if the rattle is still there.

Yeah in the video it's really only audible if you're wearing headphones and turn them up a bit. I did try moving the seat around, no change.

Haven't tried with a passenger yet.

Tried that, no change sadly

by location i can give one guess -

fuel lines under floor, but it were dependent on 1800-2000 RPM not speed

Can't hear it either I'm afraid but it does remind me that a mate of mine thinks the indicator sounds like a horse walking past on concrete

I had a somewhat similar rattle from new, although it seemed to me that it was coming from right B pillar.

It has disappeared after I had a long trip with folded back seats and removed parcel shelf. It did not reoccur after I put the seats and shelf back in place. So maybe it is worth investigating if the sounds goes from the back.

Cabin acoustics can be weird sometimes, sounds are not always coming from the places they seem to be coming.

Touch screen in the centre console is a suspect for rattles/buzzing. Slight bit of pressure on it will stop it if it is. I’ve had mine sound like it’s the passenger door making the noise when it wasn’t.
