How to replace the "Rear Center Light"

Featured Replies

Bought a 2021 Octavia 2.0 Diesel with few miles but a broken center brake light. Not so expensive to buy, but absolutely no information or videos/guides online on how to remove the old one to fit the new one.

Attaching some images to further describe exactly what I'm trying to replace.

First of all you are in the Mk4 section and you have a MK3 but you say it does not work ! is it all the segments that are out? if

so I think you need to check if you have power to the unit

I'm not sure I understand your response but I will try and give some more details.

The car is from 2021

Škoda Octavia Combi 2.0 TDI DSG Sequential, 150hp, 2021

I posted in the correct section of the forum since the mk3 Skoda stopped production 2020.

I am only looking for some guide / help from anyone that has successfully removed the rear spoiler and how to do it. Not sure what you are on about really in your response, maybe you are responding to the wrong thread?

I also had issue with mine. But luckily it was replaced under warranty.

I bought the car used, knowing about the issue with the light, but couldn't imagine that it would be this tricky removing the spoiler to actually replace it.

In the Workshop manual @TheUltraRunner sent me, there is a note saying :

The tailgate and spoiler cannot be removed without being destroyed without damaging the paintwork.

So if I understand it correctly, there is no way of removing the spoiler without damaging the paintwork (removing the spoiler is required to replace the light that is not working)

Hmmm I really doubt that they did any respraying when they changed mine. They changed it together with a regular service. I waited approx. 2h altogether.

Quite confusing altogether, but I will investigate further, your info atleast gives me hope. Thanks.

Model: Skoda Octavia III 5E5

Year: 2014

I see, I get the confusion now... Well I have more than one car, so the info on my account is for my main car. This post is for a newer one.

Mine was replaced under warranty with no respray (as far as I'm aware). It was completed the same day.

I did it myself recently. Wasn't as described in the workshop manual and did not require any repainting. Some patience and it is doable.

Could you give me a breakdown of what needs to be done, i took off the screw by the rubber puller inside boot, i took off the 2 screw on top of the boot lid, wasn't sure what next. Does the plastic come off after this or what is the best way to do seen other cars u can prise out the light wasn't sure

I am afraid I would not be able to tell the whole truth since I don't remember all the steps. But essentially it was a matter of removing screws and deattaching the clips that hold the interior in place. This way you can reach the screws for the spoiler which needs to be removed as well. When you have removed the spoiler from the car, then it is easy, just unscrew the light and replace it.

In my case i saw that the screws were super rusty and I could see that water had reached the light, which also explains why it died.

Bought a new light from Škoda directly and that one had some improvements done for the screw holes which could be an indication that they know about the issue with the lights. Happy I did not buy a used light and hoping this will last longer.

Sorry for the not so detailed description, but the workshop manual helped me a lot in identifying screws and steps , even though it included some steps that were not necessary for my car (but could potentially be needed for your car)

Mine too had several segments not working and some water inside. Got it replaced, under warranty, at dealer workshop. No painting was required

Got it sorted as semzo stated definitely nt straight forward the mk 3 octavia definitely easier from looks of video mk 4 more complicated once the plastic is off but job done

I have the same issue and purchased a new light trough the dealer. @Semzo would you be able to share the workshop instructions? Thanks in advance!

Timo

It can be done buts its painful, need ta remove the plastic in boot, then the bolts/screws all around its one of the last things to be installed the high level rear light so alot of dismantling. Only thing i woudl suggest is a quarter inch ratcher or smaller ratcher as 4 of the screws are very small and hard to get at in one area. Also put a sheet on the rough as u will need to flip boot lip at some point to get access. Make sure u test it well before putting back together

Theres a video of the mk3 on youtube beinh done similar in from plastic removing part. I bought a plastic removal kit off amazon as need ta make sure not to damage it

I've gotten al the trim of, but got stuck today taking the spoiler of. With all bolts/screws removed (11 total) the middle part of the spoiler (towards the front of the car) didn't really feel safe to lift, like there was some kind of clip. We couldn't find what precisely so any help welcome.

We mounted the spoiler back but the trim is still removed for now.

If you can send me a picture i can help, from what i remember there are screws underneath looking up towards the the spoiler. But please send me a photo and il direct thanks

the screws like in the image from 2 januari from semzo, I didn't take pictures today unfortunately.

We managed to lift the window side up maybe a few centimeters, but the side near the antenna didn't feel like it was loose.

actually made a photo earlier, red arrow are the nuts/screws we removed

Id imagine u have missinh a bolt, i remember the it came up with little force in the end
