Fluid leak on the rear wheel

Featured Replies

Hello everyone

I own an Octavia mk3 (150k miles)

I recently noticed some fluid stains on my rear wheel (driver’s side), near the rear hub. I’m not sure if it’s oil, brake fluid, or something else.  (As you can see on the attached pics)

Has anyone experienced something similar? What should I check first?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If it is coming from the car, i wud guess wheel bearing grease. If possible lift the car or jack that corner up and without hand brake spin the wheel by hand and listen for any scraping noise and feel how freely the wheel spins. Also you can take the wheel off to see better where the leak is coming from.

However, are you sure anyone has not sprayed some oil there to help loosen wheel bolts or wheel hub bolt? Any work done there lately?

Thanks for the advice!

I actually cleaned the car recently, and the fluid stain has come back again. I haven’t done any work on the car since then, I am 100% sure that it’s definitely coming from the car itself.

I’ll try lifting the car and checking the wheel bearing as you suggested

Could it also be from grease someone's put on the mating face between the wheel and hub?

I think you'll need to take the wheel off and have a look at what's going on.

Dog pi55.

Forgot to say that the wheel bearing is not necessarily toasted yet even if it is the source of the leak so it might seem and sound ok. But if it comes from the bearing it will be very kaput very soon, if not yet.
