I have noticed after a cruise down a dual carriageway that there is a drone which is making me think i should put the res back on.

i am wondering if its possible to remove the 2 boxes just before the exhaust ends would be better but not sure its its possible or fail MOT if i did this. Does anyone know?

VID-20250214-WA0004.mp4   It let's go a bit more on gear changes. Bit more of a grunt which is fun. Not sure if it's a great sound )

  • I did a centre resonator delete recently on my 220 petrol Superb - got an RPM Performance Resonator Delete Anti-drone pipe. It's made for the mk3 Octavia TSi. Good fit. Makes a nice lit

The EA888 is not a great sounding engine. All you really do is increase the volume of the farting (that's the only honest description) it produces; Centre res should give you what you're looking for,

There's a reason why I spent extra and got the helmholtz version - no drone at all, even under hard acceleration when overtaking or flooring up a hill.

Here are my two videos.

Res delete, Stage 1, 200 cell downpipe.

Downpipe almost has no effect in sound.

Drone starts at 2800rpm.

You will also find that even removing all of the resonators, in a post-2019 GPF model, will make little difference to the 'enjoyable' sound of the engine. Rather, it will just increase interior NVH.

Generally speaking, with GPF models, you either deal with the stock sound, or take a visit to Milltek/Scorpion/Remus/etc

Did you have to cut behind the clamp forward of the resonator and use an additional clamp?

I've just mocked mine up (Cupra Formentor pipe) and it sits some way behind the natural break with the hangar in the correct position. Guessing OEM has a bit of extra length due to the size of the car compared to the smaller hatch's...

@Cactusjack - mine is a FWD Superb, hence the centre resonator setup is different to the AWD version, which u seem to have.

Having said that, I've heard of some of the 280 owners who got the Forementor resonator saying that they had to get the pipe lengthened a bit.

This is mine.....

My mistake, missed your post on previous page and concentrated on the pipe you linked! Thanks for your reply though.

I'm confident it will fit, I'll do it tomorrow when the extra clamp arrives.

Just checking this pic. That looks like it will fit lengthwise right?

Yes it will fit, just the natural break forward of the box is a bit further forward here so you have to make 2 cuts rather than 1, then rejoin it behind the existing clamp on the right of the pic.

Nice. They removed the resonator from 2019 onwards so I don’t have an option sadly.

Done it... 2nd cut was an absolute pig, cheap exhaust cutter blunted really quick!

Fits well, sounds a little better at idle, with a bit more burble under load. Will do a proper listen tomorrow on the way to work.

@Cactusjack How did it sound today?

Sounds decent for the price to be fair, a bit louder in general with a hint of drone when cruising, full throttle is a blast with the "DSG farts"!

Tis a shame ur getting some drone whilst cruising.

Otherwise, enjoy the full throttle sounds 😁

Has anyone removed the 2 box things before the end of the exhaust and just done the pipe straight out? Would it sound better?

Apologies for my lack of knowledge on cars...

@Carst-2018SKODASuperb Who has it to sound better for the driver, the general public who are probably more annoyed than joyed,

or is it the MOT examiner or drawing attention to the police that you want it sounding better for?

@Ootohere I just want it to make noise rather than sound all bottled up. Not concerned what the public or police think. Though i don't want to make a modification that will fail the MOT.

Here we are with another sweeping statement...

Of course, every car should be a silent electric Mini and those that want any sound should be banned.

@Carst-2018SKODASuperb is yours a 270/280? @travs was looking at exhaust options for his. As yours is a pre-GPF model a resonator delete is likely all you need to achieve the desired effect. Doing a backbox delete (I think what you're on about) is perhaps going more down the ASBO/noise route!

Agree - I don’t think there’s an option for me in reality. No res to delete which would just give it a bit more presence to the sound without being just loud. Seems GPF kills all fun and only option to replace that is an EC compliant HJS version which is not happening at £2.8k before labour.

@OccyVRS I have other cars than a MINI Electric and plenty over the years that sound good and not antisocial.

A backbox delete would more sound horrendous than antisocial. I would assume too that most people, seeing a Skoda Superb making a noise like that, would just assume it was broken!

@OccyVRS Given what's been said here, and that my '67 plate 1.4TSI has a GPF/OPF, am I right in thinking that a res delete isn't worthwhile in any sense e.g. 'sound', performance or whatever some may consider a positive of some kind?

Errrrrr... depends if you have the central res (I would assume the 2.0 280 is a very different exhaust to your 1.4). It won't do much for performance, however it will change the sound - just maybe not in a significant way.

Here is a video of a GPF car with a res delete, compared to the same GPF car, unmodified (starts at 9:20).

Not much of a difference, really, and bear in mind these are tuned 2.0 cars with probably the most lairy MQB exhaust systems (tied with a Golf R).

From my understanding, generally -

Pre-GPF

  • Resonator delete - nice

  • Backbox delete - horrible

  • Full catback exhaust - perfect

Post-GPF

  • Resonator delete - doesn't do much

  • Backbox delete - ruins everything

  • Full GPF-back exhaust - does more, but again, not as much as you think

My vRS would sound a fair bit better with a £1600 Milltek system. The issue is, without doing the GPF (which is illegal, I may add, and will void your insurance), it just won't sound good enough to warrant the price tag. It's a tricky thing.

When a £130,000, 540bhp twin turbo M4 CS with a GPF sounds like this, the rest of us don't have much hope.

Thank you again as always @OccyVRS 😊 That's a great summary, few need look elsewhere now on this rather niche topic.

In answer to your question, my resonator is towards the back of my vehicle. It is the GPF that runs down the centre I believe - I have a posted a photo in another thread that you will have likely seen i.e. https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/531944-14-tsi-150bhp-modifications-improvements/page/2/#findComment-5942528

My previous pride and joy was a V6 3.5 litre quad cam , twin turbo and intercooled engine.

I only had the nerve to floor the throttle once and full chat the engine sounded gorgeous when going through the auto box.

The car had the extra sports exhaust and no idea how it sounded but the car flew.

My Superb has trouble putting down it's 150 bhp so no more thrilling noises for me.

Think I am correct on saying the Skoda 1.5 Tsi produced more power than the original Rover V8 in the late 1960s.
