Clutch replacement

Featured Replies

A female relative has just been charged £1400 for 1.0 Citigo clutch replacement at a main dealer  Is this right?

Only you will know whether your statement is factual or not.

For the work involved - and at main dealer charges, that price would be pretty much as expected. 1.5 ACT TSI timing belt replacements have been quoted near that price.

Have you checked for a comparative quote from a clutch specialist?

Almost certain to be considerably cheaper, as some stealers charge up to  £200 an hour. You could also try one of the mobile specialists.

😒 Just noticed that I misread OP, I missed the 'Charged'  - read it as Quoted. Clearly too late to get a comparison price.

Should have gone to SpecSavers!

That price may be correct, but it's certainly not right!

Was this the clutch in an automatic ASG version or a normal manual gearbox clutch?

How low?

The only way to be sure is to look at the receipt.

If it's a main dealer, the hourly change may well have made it this, as Warrior193 pointed out, dealers can charge £200 (plus VAT) for work.

A quick look suggests that the clutch is about £200 and it takes 4-5 hours to fit. Let's say worst case 5 hours and £200 an hour. That gives us £1,200 + VAT = £1440

I'd expect an independent to be far less than this as their hourly rates are likely much lower; a lot will depend on where the work was done.

It's also worth looking at the receipt to see what else might have been done, as I've known people complain that their service cost £1500 or so but a glance at the receipt shows that in addition to an oil change they had tyres, disks and pads all round but they didn't think to mention this little detail...

Not to rub it in about cost but mine would have been under £100 if I didn't have to get more fluid, thats £75 for the clutch, £10 for Fuchs fluid, and £11 or so for a bearing pushing tool as I didn't want to whack the driveshafts out of the hub ( being sensitive).

If I'd caught the original gearbox oil which I was inclined to do but then didn't, it looked like it came out clear given the car only on about 36k, would have also saved on the fluid cost but never mind, still cheap as chips. I would have charged myself that much for all the hassle though.
