Changing to USB C phones ………….

Featured Replies

………… and was wondering how easy is it to change the USB socket in the Karoq?

2019 SE with Balero system (if that’s relevant), was wondering if it’s possible and, importantly easy, to change from the old style USB socket (USB A) to the new (for us) USB C one.  By easy I mean I’m not going to break anything and don’t need a computer degree to reprogram stuff.

Thoughts oh wise ones out there?

Already have a couple of cables, can’t try them as don’t get back home for a couple of days, but looking at the scenario if cables don’t work for data transfer rather than just charging.  Was thinking it’s easier to ask the question now before getting back, rather than through the fog of jet lag.  But thanks for the links.

I had USB A to Lightning on my last car. Changed to new iPhone in November and replaced connector with USB A to C. Have now moved to USB C to C on Karoq and the wired CarPlay works perfectly. Providing you are connecting to a data port, you should be OK. Cannot use wireless as the Road Angel Halo WiFi clashes with Skoda WiFi!!

Hope all goes well on your return.

USB A to USB C cable works fine in our 2018 Ateca for wired CarPlay (doesn't have wireless).

You can definitely buy the Type C module for the car, but without coding and some wiring, it won't work with CarPlay / Android Auto. It'll charge the phone no problem, but you have to change the wiring for the data pins.

The best option for charging only is to use a 12v Charger, like THIS (2x Type C) or THIS (if you want 2x Type C and 1x USB-A). They can fast charge 2 phones at the same time without any problems. You can also get an adapter like THIS, then use a cable to be able to close the cubby almost completely, or get a longer version of the USB A to C cables, and the charging adapter, and use the 2nd row 12v socket with the longer cables routed to the front.

If you want to connect your phone to the car via the existing USB A port to use CarPlay or Android Auto, you'll need an A to C cable, or a small A to C adapter.

usb A to usb C right angle cables work well and don't put too much strain on the cars usb ports

Thanks all, will deffo go down the cable or adapter route, changing the socket is officially above my pay grade.  I have two cables I can try, if that doesn’t work I’ll try the Anker ones.  And that doesn’t work then it’s the socket converter.👍

Will look at it when home, just got a 14 1/2 hour flight ahead of me from Singapore.  ☹️

There are hundreds of cables and adapters to chose from on Amazon, if you currently wish to use them. I use my usb c phone in 2 cars, one has a usb socket, the other a asb a. I just keep the cable plugged in in each car. Cables will ususlly be power and data, although I had to buy a data blocking cale for a satnav, as I needed it fitted to a switched usb (on my Skoda the 12V sockets are permanently live) and by connecting to the usb the camera thought it was connecting to a computer. I don't know whether you can get data only or power only usb c cables.

Bought a couple of cables as per MrSecretPotato, worked a treat as new phone fired the in-car screen up in a flash. 👍

Many thanks all.
