Gear changes

Featured Replies

My Skoda Superb, 2017 model has started to change gear at sub optimal times increasing my fuel consumption by 10%. Scrolling through the menus I have found "Power consumption is high" in the car menu although it is not showing as a fault without searching.

Presumably the gear change issue and the message are part of the same problem?

Any thoughts

Hello, welcome to the forum.

'Power Consumption is High' message refers to battery state of charge (SOC) and is one of the parameters that inhibits Automatic Idle Stop (Stop/Start)

This message can mean either there is presently a high electrical load (A/C, etc.) or the battery is possibly starting to fail.

Unlikely to be cause of early DSG changes, but failing battery can cause quite a few false warnings on the dash.

Have you accidently switched engine mode to sport?

Thanks for that. Did check I'm not in Sport mode but interestingly in the last month I've noticed the Stop Start has been a bit intermittent so definitely sounds as if a new battery is called for. It's done 95,000 so can't complain

Doesn't sound as if it is anything to do with the DSG which is worrying

How much later (I.e. higher revs) is the DSG shifting up gears?

Stop/Start consistently being inhibited could explain approx. 2 to 3% higher fuel use, depending on length of stops.

Sometimes 60mph in 5th, but generally stays in lower gears longer and often when accelerating drops to 4th before kicking back up to 6th - as if I'm a boy racer! On long hills it drops to 5th even if the speed is well into 6th gear territory. In urban driving often stays in 5th at 40 mph

That rather sounds like it's stuck in Sport mode - even though the mode is not selected. Try selecting Sport mode, then switching back to Normal or Eco after a while.

That's a good shout. I'll try that. Good old switch it off and switch it on again usually works!

...or try it in Eco mode for a while and see what that does.

Sounds like low voltage problem worth checking the charging system/battery

How many gears ????

I would have thought 5th gear at 40mph would be reasonable if you were just rolling along, no?
