Few questions regarding a used Superb (including 1.5 vs 2.0 TSI and mpg question)

Featured Replies

Hi all, looking at upgrading my old estate. Was looking at the Octavia, but also started considering the Superb. Had a test drive and whilst it was not as enjoyable as the Octavia, it was smooth and seems to have quite a few extras. So that's started me looking at something like a 21+ plate and at least SE tech, 1.5Tsi.  First general question is there anything in general to watch out for on  these?

Then, I realised that you could get a 2.0T in the Sportline. I haven't test driven these and it is out of my budget at the moment, but just wondering how these compare - any views?

And I was surprised to see Honest John report similar MPG for 1.5T vs 2.0T. If being driven calmly - would any of you share what you get on motorways and round town? A comparison of anyone that has had both would be super helpful!

Thanks for any help!!

Hi,  I drive a 2.0 TSI  190   Superb hatchback  which averages around 32mpg around town and can get 45 mpg on motorway runs at sensible speeds ( 65/70 ish)

Sorry haven't driven a 1.5TSI for comparison but what I can say is the 2.0TSI  190  engine suits the Superb with it  being quiet and responsive,

Hope this helps you a little

All depends what driving you do, 1.5 can get 60+ mpg on motorways

Thanks for the replies, so doesn't seem too bad on the 190, appreciate it would be better still on the 1.5 on a motorway. Just realised you can actually get the 2.0T on a non Sportline too - obvious to most of you no doubt, but I'm new to Skoda's!

Seen a 5yo Superb 2.0T with 85k miles. Anything to watch out for with that level of mileage, I'm guessing lots of motorway mileage. I'm coming from a (B7) A4 type car which has been rock solid so I believe 85k miles shouldn't be too much stress on the engine as long as it's been maintained but appreciate views!!

Also @Stonechip, what is the cambelt interval and what DSG does yours have (and what is the oil change interval on that)? Also are they ok to retrofit a towbar? Thanks!

I believe all TSIs are chain-driven, not belt.

I would not consider a 1.5 engine on such as large car as the Superb, one of the reasons for abandoning the PHEV option.

There are several posts about retrofitting towbars, from the OE and recode the car to aftermarket. It tows well.

The 2.0 has a chain, plenty of common faults if you look on the forum. Main thing I would look out for is injector and carbon build up on intake valves. Not that you can check without investigating.

Hi  @Mr_Bigglesworth the DSG in mine is the DQ381 which from day 1 has been brilliant - no hesitation and smooth as butter. The 190 engine is the EA888 gen 3b   which again IMHO is a great engine and in its 190 form barely stresses it through any type of driving. This engine has I believe a chain driven cambelt that  requires a service NOW every 80,000 miles, If any of this is incorrect I am sure someone with more than my limited know how will soon be on to correct this.

Hope this helps

1.4 and 1.5 has belt. I have ovned 1.4 Superb and it is poweful enough if you don't need to pull a trailer.

Having driven the 1.4 and 1.5 in a few cars, the 1.4 is a much nicer engine so I would avoid the 1.5 if it were me.

The reason the 2.0 isn't much different on economy is due to the engine being less stressed. It doesn't need to try as hard on the big car. I imagine it could use a lot more fuel if pushed though.

Thanks for the replies. All ever so helpful.

Any views whether 85k miles is a bit much. I feel as though it is probably mid-life for a car like this (judging on my own 2.0T on a different car).

I used to have a 2.0TDi and now have the 2.0 TSi, I haven't driven the 1.5TSi.

The 2.0TDi was good but I find the 2.0TSi absolutely brilliant.

OK the mpg is about 30 round town and 40-45 on a motorway which is obviously less than the diesel but it is fun and the acceleration is great.

I retrofitted a towbar on the diesel and have a factory fitted towbar on the 2.0TSi.

The retrofitted one was fine but if you are towing be careful with the oil temperatures.

On the diesel, and I was only using the towbar as a cycle rack carrier, the oil temperature would get up to 113 degrees or more on a hot day.

On the 2.0TSi, because the towbar is factory fitted and it includes an enhanced cooling system, the temperature never exceeds 99 degrees.

I get between 23-25 on a ridiculously short commute. The best I’ve had on a 200 mile, almost all motorway trip was 40.2.

Just back from Holland in my 2.0 Tsi 190hp L&K and did 704 miles and still 90 miles indicating in tank.Holland has a 100k. speed limit pretty much everywhere. Dash mpg indicated was 57 mpg. Over optimistic but still pretty good. Nearer a true 50 I expect.IMG_4299.jpeg
