PD160 Intake pipe - the definitive thread?

Featured Replies

Why did they bother with it then? Why not just stick with the 130 intake on the 160 engine?

Matt

Because it looks and sounds sportier and suits SEATs more youthful sporting image and styling.

  • What else do people have problems with finding the same old answers for?

  • Even on a PD160, the requirement for the larger intake is marginal and is really only needed in extreme climatic conditions. I did the reverse. I put a PD130 intake on Ibiza Cupra PD160 and the owner

  • This is the best answer I've heard about these bloody air intakes. Nothing to do with power, different size pipes for different climatic countries. Seat (Spain), skoda (checz).

Its a piece of black plastic that looks no different to a 130 version unless put next to each other. It made no difference to the sound of my car at all, so both them reasons are not ones that would make VW go to the extent & cost of making it slightly bigger when they could use the 130 one.

I did the reverse. I put a PD130 intake on Ibiza Cupra PD160 and the owner couldn't tell any difference until she took it to the Spanish Pyrenees. Even then she said any difference was minimal.

Spec's are changed often depending on country, so that would be something added to the car depending on where it was destined to go, not where the manufacture was based lol.

However, it says to me as a explanation that it's needed when hot. So maybe us guys running bigger turbos etc will find it helping in hot weather under hard driving situations

The worse case would be at extreme high temperature and altitude where the air is less dense and larger air volumes are required.

I would expect the car to work at maximum performance in all conditions/countries that it may travel to - not just the country it was sold in.

Lots of cars have spec changed depending on the country it's going to, hence why the Maltese fabia's lack heated mirrors. So if it saved vag money they wouldn't bother if it wasn't needed. If it makes a difference to ibiza 160's in heat, then a mapped/big turbo'd Fabia would benefit too.

So by that rule, were fabia's not sold in Spain then?

I believe the maximum performance would be marginal for a PD160 engine with a PD130 intake in extreme conditions, but the PD130 intake would be OK for lower powered engines.

I.e. A standard PD130 engine will not benefit from a PD160 intake - even in extreme conditions.

No one is saying its worth doing on a standard car, But with a remap or further mods (which most people considering this are doing no one fits a intake on it's own) it will make a difference.

Absolutely, at 160HP you would be in the same boat as the Ibiza Cupra owner. In extreme conditions, you would notice a small difference but in the UK you would be fine.

At higher powers, you would certainly notice a small difference in the UK at 175+HP and a more significant difference in extreme conditions.

I’m going to remap my Fabia vRS so I checked with Seat on how much the PD160 intake pipe costs and they quoted £98! Everyone seems to say you must have the PD160 intake for a remap, but 98 quid!

Does it make that much difference having the intake? From reading various forums it seems to give 5 more bhp and help reduce the smoke. Is that correct or is there more to it?

I’m sorry if you’ve all been through this a million times I just want to be clear that spending £98 on the intake isn’t a waste of money.

Cheers

My personal view is it makes no difference to a simply remapped car.

I think this discussion is well and truly over by now, and reading the whole things it sounds like it was a simple and cheap mod that gave marginal gains to a mapped car when it was £40

2014 prices are a different issue. these two chunks of low grade plastic now cost a combined £121.50.

Just going to let that sink in....

£ 1 2 1 . 5 0

There are 7 or 8 of each part sitting in factories, waiting to sell.  Can't see them shifting anytime soon.

I have a pd160 intake on my mapped fabia and it made less power than my old fabia with standard intake

I run the PD 160 intakes on my cars, however I find that to get the best performance, I fit the standard pipe then do an ECU reset - Then after the ECU reset fit the PD160 pipe.
