Sat nav giving incorect info

Featured Replies

Hi all

A few weeks ago my sat nave on the Yeti, think its a RNS315, decided I was 40 miles away, the antenna assembly was suggested as there are know corrosion problems, I've checked and its a dry as a bone..

I did notice from the antenna 3mm coaxial cable. I've lifted out the Admunsen unit and reseated all the cables , no sign of the very distinctive 3mm coax cable, , strange ????

I've tried resetting the system, and after one reset It did correct it self after driving 10 miles. Only to do the same thing again

It must be getting sat signals as its showing me moving, albeit not where I really am, everything working except it indicating the wrong place, software has been reloaded and also run from the SD card.

Also my parking sensors seem off line , and sometimes on startup, when put in reverse the rear camera is working, even when there is the message optical parking not available, that only happens on first start up in the morning when cold.

All other times no reverse camera and no beeps when reversing near obstacles, the car is only just run in 12 years old with 120,000 miles, diesel engine.

Perplexing and very annoying

thanks

Richard

This is going to sound daft, but have you checked the battery?
There are known strange occurences when a battery is starting to fail. Check the resting voltage, after leaving the ignition off for atleast 3 hours, and before starting the engine.

I second Lanigraham. In years of following this forum there have been numerous occasions of weird behaviour in the electrics that were resolved by a new battery. I even experienced this myself - a new battery was probably the cheapest fix ever!!

If the antenna is faulty and therefore less sensitive than it should be, the head unit may only be able to get a fix from the strongest satellites, the minimum being three. This results in reduced position accuracy, but should still get you within a couple of hundred metres.

The very large errors you are reporting suggest that the problem is with the processing in the head unit. Worth checking the basics first, like battery voltage and the fuse(s) feeding the head unit, which might have suffered corrosion and bad contacts.

Hi,

I have checked the battery a few times and fuses. I made the mistake of leaving a dash cam plugged in to the cigar lighter socket, not realising it does not get turned off with the ignition, so after a few days on the drive a flat battery. the dash cam takes over 1 amp, so after a few days. PITA

I'm getting very suspicious of the head unit, as the errors are so large and if it was not getting enough signal from the sats I would expect to see the map showing some instability as well as where it thinks the car is , but the map looks stable and the arrow for the car moves in the correct direction.

Any suggestions for getting a used one in the UK ?? a trusted dealer or individual

Thanks

If you've flattened your battery like that I would be very suspicious of it's state now.
Have you actually checked the resting voltage?

  • Author

I just went out and measured the resting state of the battery,. The car was last used Saturday afternoon, so 48 hours since last charged . measures 11.86v

Which voltage means your battery is down to around 35% state of charge (yellow warning level) - even more importantly, your battery voltage will almost certainly be falling to critical level when the starter is operated.

At a minimum, your battery requires a full recharge, then a proper test.

As Warrior says, your battery has failed and needs replacing urgently since you are unlikely to get it to hold a charge.
Get that done and then see what the situation is.

The battery may be recoverable - but it will have suffered some damage through the deep discharge.

I'd suggest recharging with a suitable charger then a proper condition test before deciding on replacement - remember, any replacement battery will require adaptation ('coding') if your vehicle has smart charging system.

Battery at 12.25 after a drive

is the RNS315 I have normal, the ones on ebay dont show the connector in the top LH corner

Seeing the previous posts I'm wondering how old the battery is. So often we have seen on this forum all sorts of strange behaviours which resolve themselves when a new battery is fitted. And this can happen even when on paper the battery is still "good". For my money if the battery is five years old or more a new battery isn't going to be a wasted investment but it might save you going through all the hassle of sourcing and fitting a new head unit just to find you still have the same problem.

(Although not Yeti related I've had a recent lesson on not over-thinking problems. I've had a worrying noise from my tumble dryer for a while. On the principle of common problems happen a lot I self diagnosed it as needing a new main bearing - not a lot of money but a faff to actually do the work. I decided to throw caution to the wind and get an engineer in to do it for me having been quoted £80 plus parts. Engineer duly arrived, listened to the noise, asked a couple of questions and did a couple of quick tests. Apparently the bearing is fine but as it is a condensing dryer with a heat pump there is a capacitor somewhere in the works that, as he described it, gives the drum an extra nudge to get it going. Apparently they lose capacity over time. His advice - leave well alone until it fails - if it ever fails - and then he'll come back and put a new capacitor in for the cost of the part. Possibly the best £80 I've ever spent as I'd have spent a day replacing the wrong bits so time and money wasted. Hence my suggestion of fitting a new battery if the old one is at or close to the end of it's life; you have certainty that if the problem persists it isn't the battery and it's not cost a lot of money or taken a lot of time).

£72 later new 72AH battery and still exactly the same with the sat nav

AS I said If it was doing it when driving when the battery is charging and the voltage is above 13V, unlikely to be anything to do with the battery.

So its still got a location error of 25miles, still shows me traveling in the correct direction, mainly across fields., still no parking sensors, still pointing at the head unit

This is now starting to get expensive, replaced the battery , made no difference as I suspected as the problem existed when the engine was running .

Bought another RNS315, which arrived this morning.

Had to purchase a code as the code the seller gave was rubbish.

when eventually got it running, the sat nave showed the sellers road not mine, and to make matters worse , the DAB was non functional, so now to try and return the faulty goods and get my money back..

The antenna is clean and dry underneath.

On the back of the RNS 315 there are 4 coaxial sockets , on the lower two white , then next to it a blue , and at the top left hand corner a black one, does anyone know which is the connector from the Sat Nav antenna ?

also

emerging from the antenna there are several coaxial cables, one of them is RG174 , brown covering and about 3mm dia, the other coaxial cables are black and larger

I cant see where this smaller cable goes, dont think its the sat nav link from antenna to head unit, as RG174 is lossy at 1500MHz.

Is there another unit between the head unit and antenna ????, all fuses have been removed and checked, and the connectors were all clean.

I could remove the bottom plate on the antenna, and hope the connections are with connectors and not hard wired, where can I find details info ????

TIA

Richard

Hi

If the connectors are FAKRA types, there is a standard colour code. Whether VAG adhere to this code I don't know, but it's a start. See here: https://www.grand-tek.com/en/fakra-connector-assembly.aspx

Many GPS antennas use thin RG174 cable. Due to the cable loss (about 1 dB per metre at 1575 MHz) it is normal for the antenna end to incorporate a preamplifier of typically 20 to 30 dB gain. Power for the preamp will come either from a DC wire or by "phantom feed" using the inner of the RF cable. Sometimes the phantom feed is programmable on or off in the head unit. Failure of this power feed will result in very low gain and poor or no satellite reception.

This post might shed some light : https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/492541-gps-not-working-help-with-wiring/

  • Author

Thanks , very useful , so the blue is the GPS., which makes sense as some of the 315's dont has the phantom power connector.

and the antenna has a short pigtail of cables, I didn't see the connections under the head liner when looking at the antenna. .

I'll measure the voltage out on the phantom connector , and see if thats up at the antenna.

It also means I can get the antenna in to my work area, and have a look at the preamp, it may be repairable if defective.

Where on the sat nav menu does it give a report on how many sats its receiving, I've missed that if it does

Thanks again

Your car may only be using accelerometer sensors as e.g. when you go through a tunnel the sat nav still tracks the car's movement even when it's not receiving any gps signals.

"Where on the sat nav menu does it give a report on how many sats its receiving, I've missed that if it does"

I sold my 2016 L&K last November and bought a new Volvo XC40 BUT I kept downloads of the Yeti Main and the Amundsen2 Infotainment Manual (for nostalgia's sake). Pages 47 & 48 of the Infotainment Manual have reference to Number of received / available satellites information.

I'll cut and paste stuff to here if you don't have a manual yourself. Just ask.

Sorry I dont have that manual, could you please paste her e

Thanks

GPS satellite signal

The unit uses the GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite signal for route

guidance.

Outside the range of the GPS satellite signal (e.g. in dense vegetation, in tun-

nels, parking garages, etc.), the unit navigates only with restrictions using

some on-vehicle sensors (such as speed sensor or steering angle sensor).

The unit offers the possibility to show in the split screen display the following

Position » Fig. 32 on page 48 information about the current geographical po-

sition of the vehicle and the satellite signal.

Geographical longitude

Geographical latitude

elevation

Number of received/available satellites

To view the information on the longitude and latitude of the current vehicle

position display requires the reception of GPS signals from at least three satel-

lites.

To view the elevation information of the current vehicle position display re-

quires the reception of GPS signals from at least five satellites.

Bexhillian beat me to it, just came back from the Octavia to check - the satellites in view info in split screen mode is the same as MIB2.

The Number of received/available satellites above is further identified with a left hand side icon (which wouldn't copy) but which looks similar to this

For some reason I cant get the split screen, I can only guess the firmware in the unit I have does not have the function,

when it say the original navigation SD card, al I have it the last map version , and the map version for eastern europe.

Thanks Bexhillian for the info,

I'll have another go in a bit, as its a bank holiday its cold and peeing with rain here
