Blind Spot Monitor Question

Featured Replies

Just upgraded my superb to a sportline 280, which has blind Spot monitoring. But I'm not sure it's working properly.

I collected the car yesterday and drove 300 miles home with it. The blind Spot monitoring on the drivers side was working perfectly, and I don't think the passenger side came on once. So not sure if this is an issue, or this is a setting issue. Or is just normal, and that is how it works!

Sit in car, lock and unlock, blind spot ligths should blink while unlocking this way you can check them

Thanks I will try that.

Update- neither of them flash. The indicator lights on the wing mirrors both flash, but neither of the blinds spot flash! I know the driver one works fine, despite it not flashing when locking the doors

Hi,

I've also feared the BSD did not work properly on the passenger side, when I got my Mk3. But once the dealer checked it and told me there was no error, I finally understood that it takes the differential speed into account with vehicles you're overtaking.

If this differential speed is high enough, it doesn't light on. It only lights on when you overtake with only few mph faster.

Hope it helps. 😉

That sounds plausible. However, I have definitely over taken many cars yesterday while travelling about 5 mph faster. How slow do I have to be going?

I had no mean to measure. But I would say less than 5 mph (maybe 5 km/h) 🤷‍♂️. I let you make some tests... 😉

My Mk3 has just gone with a new owner this morning, thus I can't check anymore. I'm doubting about their lighting on upon lock/unlock. But I'm sure both BSD icons just light on, when you start the engine (or at least put the contact ON, I can't remember).

Ohh yes as bap told, they should flash for sure but could be with engine start, sorry for fail info about lock/unlock my bad 🤣

They both flash when starting engine. So seems all good. Just seems pretty pointless on the passenger side then if they are working properly

Good to hear, maybe you didn't pay attention that much first time. For me they are great, wish I got FL model with side lights instead of tiny light at mirror but wcyd 😁

I was specifically looking out for them the whole journey from Wigan to Glasgow. Not once they came on. That's why I don't think they are working correctly. If they are, they are useless.

To clarify, the passenger side never came on once. Driver side, flawless

As mentioned earlier the speed of other vehicles may be giving what you are describing.

In that case. I'm sure I overtook at under 6mph. I even tried sitting beside a car which didn't trigger it. At least I know what it is supposed to do, so can try on way to work tomorrow.

So in theory. If I creep up on a car and overtake it very slowly, this should trigger it! Which I'm sure I did a few times yesterday too try it. So will try it again tomorrow

It is certainly speed differential sensitive. For the near side, the idea is that an alert is given either if a car is coming up on your inside, or if you have overtaken a car quite slowly and it’s lurking in your blind spot such that you might have forgotten it’s there. But on mine, the necessary minimum speed differential is not tiny, I’d say at least 10mph. I use it routinely to decide when to pull in in front of a car I’ve just overtaken on the motorway. So if you have never seen it come on, that’s wrong.

My sister bought a new Karoq several years ago, it transpired the blind spot monitoring was defective from new but this wasn’t obvious from any dashboard fault light. There are of course two transceivers in the rear bumper, one for each side. And bear in mind they are the same devices that do rear traffic alert when eg reversing out of a supermarket car park space. So it you get an (audible) alarm when reversing out with a car approaching from the right, but not from the left, this is a clear indication that the LH module is faulty. Or of course a diagnostic scan with eg VCDS.

That's very helpful, and will try that tomorrow. I have an obdeleven so can do a scan also. I'm sure I have rear traffic alert off. Wonder if that could be part of the issue! Will turn it on anyway

I had the tiny lights on my Superb Mk3 and now have side lights on my current Kodiaq. I have to say the latter are much more visible and safer indeed. You can't miss the side lights whereas you can miss the tiny lights depending on how the sun light reflects on the rearview mirrors...

I retrofitted the wing mirror caps with the side lights, so now I have the best of both worlds 😁

Bring me pair of caps pls 😃

To be sure your nearside indicator is not working drive on any road with a clear left hand lane and providing you are moving at say 20 mph + wait until someone "undertakes you " at more than the 20 mph+ and your nearside BSM should light up at around 50 yds as the car approaches , If your were daft enough to put on your nearside indicator your nearside BSM should flash to alert you. Mine do not light when I am passing cars only when cars are passing me on both sides

If any /none of the above does not happen I would say its not working

Hope the above makes sense

This should be a good check for OP. Indicating to change lane when unsafe to change lane. Should flash multiple times in quick succession

Just get yourself into some multi lane stop start urban traffic - preferably in the centre lane of 3 - the BSM should / will be lighting up like a council house at Christmas………

Does the rear blind spot system work OK, that is the warning beep when reversing out into traffic / pedestrians?

In that case. I'm convinced it's definitely not working. It would have activated during my journey, going by the scenarios on here when it should work. Rear traffic monitor is currently off, so will activate that on my drive to work this afternoon, see if it makes a difference

The NS also warns if you’re cutting in too early when overtaking. I only noticed this when a twerp on my NS decided to pull out as I was overtaking them and I had to accelerate more and get fully in front of them as they continued to blindly go about their manoeuvre.

That's why I don't think it works properly. I would expect it to do those things. Mine had done nothing.... So far

If you’re getting the flash when you start-up, the system is working. For obvious reasons, warnings on the OS are far more prevalent than the NS.
