Rear Brake pad and Disc Change Superb Mk3

Featured Replies

Hi All I am going to change my rear pads and discs and need to put electric brake into service mode. wondering if anyone has used the Vaws 3.0 to carry this out.

or if someone has details of the steps to take. Thanks

Hi,

I've done it once with VCDS. I don't know VAWS 3.0 and if there are any difference.

Here is the procedure with VCDS:

1) Ignition on, engine off, handbrake released, foot NOT on brake pedal, open 03-ABS > Basic setting. Then look for "Start lining change" or something to that effect in the drop down menu.

2) Piston is then pushed back, do not wind, you'll break it.

3) No tool needed, a lever bar between disc and pad or flat screw driver, G clamp or any other tool will work to push back

4) Once pads changed and caliper refitted (and spring as well), pump the brake pedal lots till full contact is made

5) Ignition on, engine off, foot NOT on brake, open 03-ABS > Basic settings. Then look for "End lining change" in the drop down menu, wait till its done (roughly 40 seconds). This enables the handbrake learning the new rear pad thickness in order to adjust the correct pressure to apply, when handbrake is ON.

6) Cycle ignition, put handbrake on and off a few times, done.

Don't forget to brake gently for 200km or so to bed the pads... 😉

Hope this helps.

Hi Bap33

That sounds very similar to the diagnostic tool i have you can check it here Vaws 3.0

Than you for all the information i have changed plenty of brake pads but never with the electronic brake. I feel confident i can get it into service mode but unsure if the tool needs to remain plugged in the car and left on while changing the pads, so would be handy if someone has used the Vaw 3.0 to guide me. Many thanks all.

I did mine yesterday using OBDeleven. Took an hour for both sides.

The OEM discs are seriously ****e and need to be recalled. Here are mine after 18k miles. Replaced with pagid parts from halfords £70 all in compared to £380 from the stealers

I closed VCDS while doing it. But I made the mistake to let the radio on and driver door opened. This battery was very low, when it was time to restart the car.

Note: I only replaced rear pads, discs were still fine.

My first go so please be gentle with me.

A friend of mine took his car into his local Skoda dealer to have his breaks inspected.

He receives a telephone call from Skoda , requires new discs and pads all round. Mileage was 22,000 but he agreed to the recommendation of the dealer.

Next service his is informed that the discs and pads are worn out. From memory it's about 7000 miles.

Change them but I want all the old parts back !!

Plenty of warning but upon collection he was informed parts have been disposed off.

Went to speak to the Dealer Principal who was amazed re wear but told him it must be his driving style.

He told the dealer principal what's what and left the garage !

To this day he has not paid the bill for the break components.

Now takes his 4 Skoda cars to a local independent garage and saved a fortune

Hi. Them discs certainly look F***** Think Pagid pads are good just got the same just need to get the disc now, you can defiantly save a lot of money by replacing them yourself, I had similar quote from main dealer over £300 and not sure that included the disc's.. on the vaws 3.0 I do get the option for the EPB but not ever attempting it before puts me off a bit. I know the best part of it by watching videos ect. such as connecting battery charger, turning on ignition without starting and releasing the brake and the putting it into service mode but wondering if i need to keep the Vaws connected while I'm changing the pads and discs. would be nice if someone has used the vaws 3.0 to see how they got on with it.

I had a similar thing happen to me at the main dealer said all the pads and discs need replacing and told them that's rubbish, when taking the car to a local garage was told there is nothing wrong with them.

You do not need to leave the ignition on after putting the EPB into service mode so no need for a battery charger.

Make absolutely sure that the brake caliper, pads and discs are fully assembled before doing the 'end lining change'.

Thanks for your advice, did you use the VCDS to change yours? I had been watching this on you tube :- Changing rear pads

but it is with VCDS program and not using the Vaws 3.0 which i have. I have no problem changing brake pads a disc but never don one with EPB

dont go by that video it's way over complicated!

use this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZOiYGHoCOg&ab_channel=GSOUP

He does the whole thing with one hand it's that easy..

Could be worth just buying an obdeleven to do the task - it's really useful for other things as well, scanning for faults and making adjustments to the car set up. For the brake change it's one click to open the caliper, then one click to close it again. fool proof

Many Thanks that video did seem more straight forward, Perhaps I'm looking into the EPB too much,

I used Carista (phone app with bluetooth OBD adapter) which was the cheapest option at the time and worked fine.

Have completed the full change of discs & pads and followed the VCDS instructions to the letter however I am now getting a terrible grinding sound on one of the rear wheels - any ideas? I've run through the process above - refitted the pads and disc etc - all with the exact same result...getting a little frustrated now as to what is happening!

When braking or all the time?

All the time, worse on braking...

did you put the pads on the correct way? they have arrows on the back for direction

I'm pretty sure that I did - although now you've said that I'm thinking I need to check...thanks for that 🤣

Hope you get it sorted, interested in the cause.

So am I...

Curious that it grinds with all new...

Grinding, or rubbing? Was the caliper wound in all the way? Anything up with the brake disc/shield? We're sure it's the braking system and not a bearing, etc?

Perhaps you could jack the car up and spin the wheel, maybe putting the video up here?

You've not done this have you?

Changed the rear pads and Discs today with no problems using Vaws 3.0 to put parking brake into service mode.
