OTA of System Update not working - TPI?

Featured Replies

Hi

OTA of System Updates does not work in my car.

Does anyone know if there exists a TPI to solve that?

For example an update of the firmware of the OTA module.

I know there is at least one System update available for my car (confirmed by Skoda), the update of the infotainment software to v1985, but there are no notifications showing up for it and the list in the infotainment showing available updates is empty.

I have fulfilled all the requirements listed in the manual in order for OTA of Online System Updates to work:

  • I have the Skoda Connect app on my phone and am a registrered user

  • I am registrered as the primary user in the infotainment and am welcomed as such by the infotainment everytime I press the ignition

  • The ignition and the Infotainment are switched on.

  • The ŠKODA Connect services were activated in the vehicle.

    • See below

  • The ŠKODA Connect services are available.

    • The globe in the status bar on the Infotainment screen is White

    • In the service management dialogue of the infotainment system, the service "Online System Update" shows as active and the option "Allow in vechicle" is ticked

  • The vehicle has an internet connection.

    • See above. I've tried using both e-sim as well as Wifi (using my phone as a hotspot), each for 4 hrs straight

  • The Maximum privacy is not set in the vehicle.

    • I have tried all of the other three settings related to privacy

  • The online update is available in the relevant country.

    • As mentioned before (v1985), confirmed by Skoda

  • The charge state of the 12-volt vehicle battery is sufficient

My car has received other types of updates (ie NOT of the type System Update) which have generated notifications och been successfully installed, f.eks. updates to the manual stored in the infotainment.

I am currently on infotainment version 1941 (installed some years ago by a workshop not via OTA).

It is not a bug, but feature. Not many cars are capable of OTA updates besides minor app and manual updates.

Hi

Thank you for your reply. Do you have any proof supporting your statement?

Reason for asking is:

  • The manual associated with the VIN of my car clearly states that OTA of Online System Updates is a feature available in my car

  • The workshop claims that my car should be able to install the System Updates OTA that show up in their system as available for my car (distributed by Skoda). This has also been reiterated by Skoda Europe

I'm in a similar position. The dealer told me that after applying 1941 the car would then be able to receive and automatically update to the later infotainment versions, so 1969 and 1985. However, it hasn't happened for me. Online map updates and minor application updates are downloading and applying. Most recently the 25.5 map update downloaded.

So, my assumption is that earlier infotainment systems don't have enough local storage to download, extract and apply a large infotainment update. Or that something on the Skoda side is not allowing it for my vehicle.

Mine is an early 2021 First Edition model, and I think most of us on this forum with similar age vehicles have not received OTA updates for infotainment system after getting 1941 applied by the dealer (or at home via other means). I think there may be a couple of forum members on here with early cars that have received the update OTA. But I'm not sure if those owners had hardware replaced previously. When the software issues cropping Skoda replaced parts on quite a few cars before getting on top of the software, and applying updates instead of replacing components.

Personally I'm not too bothered as 1941 has been solid and there's no bugs I'm experiencing with it. I do know there's issues in 1985 with regards to music track details not updating in the virtual cockpit when you change track.

Someone here was reporting receiving 1985 OTA on H56 hardware, but that was the only case I've ever seen on this forum or elsewhere. So it is quite confusing why it was possible for that user, but seemingly no other car running on H56 is getting it.

What would be more useful to me is if the feature of being able to send a destination from the MySkoda app to cars navigation system worked. I believe that was a feature that was promised in the original sales brochure. However, it's not something I've seen as being available in the app. So apart from the honk/flash function, the entire 'maps' tab of the app is fairly useless to me.

@JamesK You can send destination to your car via the MySkoda app. You need to go to “Maps” on the app, enter your destination via the search bar at the top, select the correct address.

Then press the arrow with the journey time which will show you the route then you can send to the car. Or just press the car with arrow pointing down and it will just send it. See image of what you need to press.

I can confirm this does work.

Yep, we know that is how it is supposed to work, but with older cars like mine and @JamesK it's not available. In my app the "arrow pointing down" to a car doesn't exist. All I get is the usual Apple share icon which allows me to send the route to Apple Maps or Waze. Very disappointing!

Anyway, back to OTA system updates, mine doesn't get them, only the maps and minor apps. The early cars are limited in the capability of the infotainment system, even compared to the published information in the brochure available at the time.

@SteveTheElder what hardware version are you running in the infotainment screen?

Bizarrely mine has a higher part number and is a 2020 build yet no OTA updates and can't upload a route form the app to the car.

@SteveTheElder @Lowepepsi2004

Here's the view I get in the MySkoda app after selecting a destination. As you can see there's no option to send the destination to the vehicle:

skoda_app2.jpg

My Device number is also the "H" part number and I haven't got the OTA update:

skoda_infotainment_version.jpg

Maybe it is just a case that Skoda haven't enabled larger OTA updates for this specific device part number, or it could also be, for whatever reason, the H version cannot cope with the OTA update.

I'm really not sure where I would take this if I wanted to ask the question of Skoda, especially now out of warranty. I'm not sure I would get very far with the dealer, and customer service always say they don't have any direct communication with the technical department.

@JamesK what do you get when you press 1hr 11min button on your image, does it show you the route and change to send to car?

@Lowepepsi2004 It just does as @SteveTheElder mentioned... you only get the usual Apple "send to" button showing:

skoda_app.jpg

Tapping it just gets you this...

skoda_app3.jpg

... which is completely useless functionality as I could just use Google/Apple Maps in the first place! 😄

I've sent my local dealer an e-mail. I got to know the tech leader there quite well when I had all my issues 2 years ago. I've asked if they'd be willing to send my questions to Skoda technical to see if there's something different with the "H" part number compared to "D" that either makes the functionality unavailable for a specific reason, or potentially an oversight on their part.

I did receive an e-mail last year telling me Skoda Connect would be deactivated because my car lacked the relevant hardware, for it to then be revoked - so they have made mistakes in the past.

@JamesK if you get no joy, ring Škoda connect team or customer service to see if there can shine any light on the issue.?

Edited by Lowepepsi2004

I could try that... but historically my experience of them has not been great. They were no help when I received the e-mail last year saying my car had a 2G antenna and would no longer receive Skoda Connect services! I tried telling them that the car had 4G LTE - but they had no clue what I was talking about, and really didn't seem to care. 🤷‍♂️

@JamesK seems we are in the same [Škoda] boat 😉

I'm taking mine in for MOT early next month so will ask the team there is they have any ideas though to be honest I've worked around it for 4 years so not sure how much motivation I have to push hard for a resolution.

@Lowepepsi2004 can you send a destination to your car as well as routes? I'm thinking its easier to sit on the sofa with the app finding a list of road trip stopovers, for example, and then send each to the car where they would hopefully show up as favourites or recent destinations.

@SteveTheElder ive never tried to send multiple destination so don’t know how it would manage that. As soon as the car start it pops up with the destination.

Just gone out to the car and sent 2 destination only the 2nd one displayed. Then you do get the option to save to favourites, cancel or view route with the option to go.

In order to get to the bottom of this it would be great if

  1. everyone who have an older version of the mk4 like f.eks. 2020-2022 with hardware H56 (see Settings/System information) that have received System Updates OTA (f.eks. update from vNNNX to vNNNY of the infotainment system, i.e. NOT the minor updates like f.eks. update of the manual or the app list in the infotainment) would say so by posting a reply in this thread

  2. everyone who have not received System Updates OTA would answer the following questions by posting a reply in this thread (my answers below)

    1. Have you followed the instructions in the manual of YOUR car describing how to enable Online System Updates OTA? (see original post for the instructions in the manual of MY car. To find the latest version of YOUR manual: go to https://www.skoda-auto.com/, select Services, click on Skoda Owner's Manuals, enter your VIN (find it on front window bottom driver side alt on door frame driver side alt under the bonnet), select Language + click Confirm)

      Answer: Yes

    2. Have you verified that Skoda claims that your car supports OTA? (go to https://www.skoda-auto.com/, select Connectivity, click on Connect Availability, top left select your country + click Confirm, click Select vehicle, enter your VIN (find it on front window bottom driver side alt on door frame driver side alt under the bonnet) + click Confirm, scroll down to General Information and check whether there's a box for Over-the-Air Update that is ticked)

      image.png

      Answer: Yes

    3. What is the Device part number and Hardware displayed in your infotainment? (see Settings/System Information in your Infotainment)

      Answer: 5E3035820D, H56

@SiWaiting U’ve seen my input. All seems to be good for me on H56.

I am bothered. For example:

  • What if there's a bug in the software somewhere (there's been alot of them as we all know) which is triggered by some other update from Skoda or when you connect your updated smartphone, usb stick or whatever to your car?

  • What if there's a future system update to your car that will fix existing bugs or provide new features that you or potential future buyers of your car want to have?

Not only do you have to schedule a visit to your workshop but also, if you have an expired warranty, you will have to pay the workshop to apply the update, something owners with a working OTA and an expired warranty do not

The dealers are also bothered about liability regarding software updates. When 1941 came out the dealer told me they knew it would fix many issues on my car. However, they could and would not apply it until specfically told to by Skoda Technical. They said if they proactively applied the update, and it went wrong and bricked the infotainment system then they would be liable for all costs involved in making it right. If, it had been authorised by Skoda Technical - then Skoda would cover it.

In the case of 1985 it has introduced a bug with CarPlay music on the Virtual Cockpit. So in the case of an OTA "push" of 1985, I'm wondering where customers stand with regards to reporting it, and Skoda making right a bug that was not present in 1941/1969.

@SiWaiting It would be interesting to collate details of early cars. I think we will probably find those of us with the H device part number are not receiving infotainment updates. Trying to find out why we're not receiving them could be far more difficult.

My details are as follows:

Online Manual Instructions Followed for Enabling OTA:Yes

OTA Update shown on Skoda-auto / General Information Page: No

Hardware Version: H56

Device part number: 5E3035816H

Current Infotainment version: 1941

OTA Updates currently being received for:

Infotainment: No

Maps: Yes

Apps: Yes
