OTA of System Update not working - TPI?

Just thought I'd mention that while going through the above threads I got the impression that many problems are solved by just doing a factory reset from the Settings menu in the infotainment.

I did a factory reset a few days ago (it had been several months since I last did a factory reset) and almost immediately after doing so, an update appeared OTA (yes, it could just have been a coincidence but what if it wasn't?). I don't know if the update is a System Update or a minor update since the information provided about the update is limited. No id related to the update is mentioned f.eks. It was not proceeded by a question whether I wish to download the update or not (which I have read is the first question asked related to a System Update, since it usually is quite large). The first question asked in this case was whether I wish to install the update or not (like when it is a minor update) and after I selected "Update", the status message shown in the infotainment translated to english is something like "Update of software in progress" or "Updating software". That same message is still being shown now several days later, i.e. I have not yet received a message saying that the update is completed. I'll keep waiting until it either is completed or I have had enough and do another factory reset.

Seems like Skoda/VAG are making changes from time to time so it might be a good first step to try a factory reset if you haven't done one in awhile and see if that triggers something which hopefully enables System Updates OTA.

@SiWaiting Let us know how it goes... if it works for you, I'll definitely also try it...

Thank you for sharing!

(additional info: @BeaverRS has not received system updates OTA and has a Skoda Octavia mk4 Nov. 2020 Combi TDI 150 (110)/DSG)

And I received maps OTA updates even when I was in 1810.

Note: After installing the 1941 update, the system offered me an OTA update, but the 1985 update was already available on my USB stick. So I installed the update the ‘old-fashioned’ way.

@SiWaiting - How did the factory reset go? Did it ever prompt the system to download an infotainment update OTA?

As I wrote, after the first factory reset I immediately got a question whether I wanted to install an update (unknown whether it was minor or major (ie System update)) or not and I selected "Update" and then it got stuck on "Update of software in progress" for several days. Then I received another update OTA. That update was definitely minor and seemed to get queued waiting for the first one to complete.

After a few days the message "Update of software in progress" was all of a sudden gone without a message whether any of the updates had been completed.

Then I did another factory reset and immediately after I got questions again whether I wanted to install two updates (I assume it was about the same ones as before). Selected "Update" on both of them. Got a message that the minor one was successfully installed. The other one got stuck on "Update of software in progress" again and as before this message disappeared a few days later (and the version of the infotainment had not changed).

So no luck however, with the current version of the firmware of my OCU, it seems like a factory reset is necessary for the car to get in contact with "the mothership" to check whether there exists any previously failed updates and initiate a retry.

I'm working a different angle now to try to get this sorted. I will share when I know more.

- Service indicator popped up. Contacted Skoda authorized workshop to schedule appointment for service. Provided evidence for and TPI of "Digital instument panel - flickering indicator" and asked for it to be fixed. Was agreed. Car under warranty

- Went to pick up car and was informed that no attempt made to fix TPI. Workshop said they wanted to schedule a separate appointment for that. Me not happy. Left and decided to wait to get TPI fixed until next scheduled service appointment

- Year later. Service indicator popped up again. Contacted Skoda authorized workshop to schedule appointment for service. Workshop said they will not be able to install fix under warranty since it had expired. Workshop also said there is at least 1 update available for my car available OTA (system update, v1985 of infotainment). I said my car does not show that there is an update available thus making it impossible to install update OTA. Workshop said they would look into it. Appointment was scheduled.

- Sent email to contact address in Skoda Connect app (supportatskodadashautodotcom) asking why my car never has received an Online System Update OTA (only minor updates OTA) despite Skoda themselves are saying that it should work in my car (see my previous entries above in the current topic). Provided them with all evidence needed to prove that I had followed the instructions in the manual.

- After several emails back and forth with a first line support person(s), they hand it over to their "technical team". First line support person says "technical team" wants me to schedule appointment with authorized workshop and reply time, date and place of appointment so "our local support team forwards the correct technical solution to the right mechanic". They gave no info of what this technical solution entails. I asked but they did not reply

- I replied the details of the appointment I already had scheduled. I emailed the workshop informing them of my conversation with Skoda support (ticket number, my original question, evidence and everything else needed to make sure that the problem gets solved at the appointment).

- Appointment day. Left car at workshop. Got call from workshop technician. He said they won't install any updates unless I pay for it since my warranty has expired, including the one Skoda support have asked the workshop to install. He said I have to pay approx. 200 euro for each and every update to be installed manually. I declined. I won't pay for something that should have been working since day 1.

- Picked up car. On specification from workshop detailing what has been done, it said I declined to get the following installed: OAA2 (update of OCU, this must have been what Skoda support thought would solve the System Update OTA issue), O3A4 (v1985 update of infotainment) and the TPI (flickering indicator).

- Sent email to Skoda Sweden providing them with all the details and asking them to explain how I was supposed to be able to discover during the warranty period that System Updates OTA does not work in my car.

- After several emails back and forth with a first line support person, I believe they handed it over to a person actually suitable to answer the question and make decisions on financial matters. In next email the first line support person said that there is a solution available at the workshop and they will get in touch (again no info about what the solution entails)

- Got email from workshop asking me to schedule an appointment "to perform the update free of charge". I replied asking what this single update is about. They said it is update of software of OCU to version 0144.

- Sent email to Skoda support informing them of this new appointment and asking them to assist the workshop technician. No reply

- Appointment day. Left car at workshop. Got email from workshop service manager. Said they had done a bunch of updates and the vehicle is ready to be picked up. Called the workshop and asked what updates they had performed, only one was supposed to have been installed. They said they had manually installed the OCU update to 0144, they had manually installed the infotainment update to 1985 and they had installed the TPI fix for "flickering indicator" all free of charge. Asked the workshop technician how I am supposed to know whether the OCU update actually solved the System Update OTA problem as they have manually installed 1985. He replied alot but nothing made any sense to me. He also said that OTA only started working from version 0135 of the OCU. I told him again that minor updates OTA had worked before in my car and whether he was explicitly talking about System Updates OTA. He replied alot but again nothing made any sense to me. Asked which version of the OCU was in the car before the OCU update. He said 0135. Asked then how come 1985 was not shown as available for download and install OTA. He replied alot but again nothing made any sense to me. Gave up and picked up the car

Conclusion (so far)

- Positives: despite no warranty, I still got a bunch of updates installed free of charge. Good to know that there exists a reasonable person at Skoda that understands that it is impossible for a car owner to, within the warranty period, discover latent bugs in Skoda's firmware/software

- Negatives: still don't know if System Updates OTA work in my car (it would have been so nice to have had this sorted once and for all and not potentially having to endure this again)

Update

Today I received the first ever notification by the infotainment system that there is a system update available to be downloaded OTA to my car. It is the version 1989 update of the infotainment.

So I assume this is due to the previously mentioned update of the OCU to version 0144.

Remains to be seen whether the system update will actually be downloaded and installed.

(Interesting to note is that I was not logged in on the app when I received the notification, which can, when reading the manual, be interpreted as mandatory to be able to receive system updates)

System update 1989 downloaded OTA (1.5 gb, esim, < 30 min) and installed (< 30 min) + Factory reset.

No problems (yet).

Solution to no system updates OTA (despite the manual associated with your VIN saying it is a supported function as well as it being one of the available Skoda Connect services for your VIN according to skoda-auto.com, and despite you having fulfilled all the requirements necessary to activate the service as described in the manual): make Skoda update the firmware of your car's OCU to (at least) version 0144.

Update:

The infotainment system just notified me that the system update O3A8 (update of the OCU to version 311 as mentioned in other threads on Briskoda) is now available to download and install OTA in my car.

Reading the notification it contains text which I have not noticed before (but a similar text was also included in the notification of system update 1989) which should be very relevant to those who still are not receiving system updates OTA (despite Skoda saying it should be possible (please read the current thread from the beginning)). The text is as follows (translated from swedish, my apologies in advance):

"The update of your car's online communication unit (OCU) will be available two years after publication. If the update is not installed in due time it may affect the vehicle's ability to function in a fault free manner. The company Skoda Auto a.s. and its business partner assumes no responsibility for faults resulting from neglecting to install the update in due time."

Simply Insane.
