Which, if any Gen 2?

Featured Replies

Morning Folks!

I’m currently looking at getting a used Octavia for my commute to work over the winter months, it’ll be 50 miles each day and it’s a 4 on 4 off rotation so around 800 miles a month.

My budget is around £5k tops, which includes tax and insurance.

I’ve narrowed my choices down to a few, with the following spec;

2009 1.8 TSI L&K DSG estate @ 106k miles

2011 2.0 TDI L&K manual estate @ 145k miles

I appreciate this is quite the variety, with almost all of them being pre facelift. A lot of posts I’ve been able to see are from a few years back, and so maybe don’t provide the most accurate picture in 2025.

Any advice or guidance will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Couple of points:

1) does your commute involve any pollution control zones? If it does you'll need a compliant vehicle (at least Euro 5 IIRC).

2) Facelift for Octy 2 was 2008-onwards, with a little blurring depending on which parts bin was closest to the production line :)

Hey mate!

1) nope, probably half and half A and B road, almost all rural so none of that to worry about.

2) yep, good spot… 🤦‍♂️ not gonna lie I copied this from my Superb post. So yeah, ignore that haha.

If you can source a decent 1.9tdi they are bomb proof. Had a 58 plate for 6 years and no problems apart from a sticking turbo actuator and the usual ball joints etc. plus a timing belt change and waterpump. No DPF to worry about and used to get 60+ MPG. They are getting rarer in good condition now though. Not as refined as more modern ones but I reckon thats why they are so reliable.

I've got a 55 plate 1.9 TDI and apart from tyres, brake discs, pads, calipers, cables, bushes, shocks, boots, wiper linkage, fuel injector, 2 x cam belts and pumps, boot switch, driver's belt socket, ABS pump, battery and starter motor I haven't had an issue in seven years!

Still goes like stink when you put your foot down mind.

My 1.9 05 BKC manual is the most reliable car I have had. Put 230k on it.

Same here with the 1.9tdi BXE although only 140k on mine and then dreaded highland car rust killed it. Still have it for spares/repair but needs rear subframe and some sill patches plus road tax was high. My now 1.6tdi is only £35 a year. Only other cars I had that was as reliable were volvo 940. Last one had 250k on it from new and only major repair was clutch and centre prop bearing .
