The automatic switching on headlights

Featured Replies

My 2025 Karoq Sportsline with Matrix headlights seems to turn them on too early, in the Light Settings menu the options are, Low / medium / high. Does low mean they come on later (when it is a bit darker) ? or is it the other way round. It was set from new as medium.

In addition, twice now on damp mornings the headlights have come on in bright sunlight, the screen where I suppose the sensor is could have been covered with external condensation, I will check next time.

Low is less sensitive, so should be what you want. But note that they setting can apparently be reset after an OTA software update. Even then the switch is way too early in my opinion. No idea why Skoda have set it so.

Thank you.

I don't rely on the auto setting. Switch them on manually then you're in control

Fair comment but there's no reason why Skoda can't make this work properly. I had it on my 2015 Polo & it worked flawlessly. So quite how Skoda have managed to make a pigs ear out of existing, basic, working technology is a mystery.

To be honest on my Superb they come on a bit early, but I’m happy with that.

It may be something as simple as they’re set to come on at a set time of day rather than light level.

Try switching to UK summer time and see if that changes anything (apart from the oblivious clock time).

Auto Lights coming on too early can surely not be an issue if just Dipped Beam. The real issue i see but the driver seems not too is only DRL,s on to the front and no Sidelights / Headlights because they never switched them on or relied on the AUTO Setting. Headlights during daylight / daytime do not annoy drivers / road users or pedestrians do they? DRL.s only in poor light do.

The issue for me, & apparently the OP, is more that it also triggers the SatNav screens to flip to night mode making them harder to see in daylight.

My Subaru XV would also switch on way too early, so have accepted the Karoq doing it too. Yesterday was a great example - 2.30 pm in blazing bright sunshine, and on they came. See my next topic re headlamp hazard warning that came on with them!

Ok, that does put a different and relevant view.

I don’t always have my satnav on, so despite driving into failing light most days this time of year I haven’t seen that.

This evening I will be out a bit earlier than normal, but will have my satnav running to see if I get the same response from my superb.

That's true

Automatic headlights work from some kind of light sensor and also will switch on with the wipers. I don't recall my android auto screen always going to night setting when the headlights switch on. What is a pain is that the rear lights don't come on with only DRLs. The biggest problem with aut lights is that they don't come on in daylight fog if it is otherwise too bright. I suppose some drivers think that an automatic system will work in all circumstances; unfortunately they do not.

That’s a fact, however the controls are very simple and in view to switch these on/off fog lights or bad weather lights.

I’d prefer all round daylights (Saab started this trend back in the 900 days).
