Weird DSG (DQ200) throttle reapplication after upshift

Featured Replies

I bought a 2014 Octavia 1.8 TSI on 110.000 kilometers (65.000 miles) with a DQ200 transmission. (It’s real mileage, I have verified it in multiple ways). During the test drive everything was perfect. However after a month it started doing weird stuff when upshifting from 5 to 6. It feels like 2 jerks. In first you jolt forward and in second you jolt backwards. By watching the revs I realised that the shift itself happens normally, but throttle reapplication is very weird. It first cuts off, waits for about half a second and then reapplies it. It only happens on mid throttle as well. On full send it also pauses the throttle for longer than I wish but it doesn’t make a jerk. On light throttle it’s perfectly smooth. Mechatronic and gearbox oil was also changed before the sale. Moving off (forward and reverse) in high load scenarios doesn’t make any jerks. I even tried to move off with a parking brake applied and it did it smoothly (in the Netherlands there aren’t a lot of hills to try hill starts)

I would appreciate any clues or DIYish solutions (I.e not spending 500 euros for a VSDC cable). It’s not like the car is undriveable, but it’s fairly annoying when you merge onto a motorway. Thank you

Hi @olek . I suggest to do some basic diagnostics, you get hold of an ODBEleven2 dongle. This will at least give you diagnostics, but not for 500 euros!

I think that even genuine VCDS is not that much (especially for a 1-3 car license).

I would suggest resetting the DSG gearbox - make sure it hasn't learnt some bad habits (my DQ250/DQ381 is terrible at learning bad shift changes).

Its also worth getting any firmware updated for the gearbox too.

To reset: To perform a manual VAG DSG gearbox reset, turn the ignition on without starting the car, fully press and hold the accelerator pedal for 30-60 seconds, then turn the ignition off (while still holding the pedal), wait - [suggest about 10 secs], and finally release the pedal and start the car to let it relearn your driving style. This process clears learned adaptations, potentially fixing jerky shifts and improving smoothness, and should be followed by a gentle test drive.

Hi @varaderoguy , thanks for the reply. Will get the obdeleven. I actually tried the adaptation reset multiple times. It didn’t clear that specific issue. Other shifts are perfectly smooth. It’s the stubborn 5->6 upshift. It’s not as bad in manual mode, but still I can feel it

Who changed the oil in the DQ200 & MCU? Can you be certain the correct oil capacity was refilled?

Two different oils used as well. It also has no service schedule.

@ DQ200 DSG were part of a Service Campaign globally, 2013-2015 models. '34H5' A software update. Preventative because of pressure / heat issues causing cracking and the issue with the actuator. Started in 2017.

@Evolution13 yeah the software issue seems more likely. 3-4 shift is perfectly smooth. It’s only the 5-6. If it was hardware problem I think 3-4 would have had a much worse jerk. Oil in the MCU was changed by a friend of mine who has done it countless times. And yes, it started not directly after the change, but after some time. And no, it’s not leaking.

Note to the post above: I only tried to reset the DSG using the throttle method. I didn’t actually went to a shop for an actual reset (basic settings in vcds)
