Driver's driveshaft replacement parts

Featured Replies

Hello

Anyone who has changed driver's side driveshaft, what replacement parts do I need?

I've changed passenger side driveshaft previously needing only a new hub nut and abs protector ring. No new gearbox seals.

Do I need a new gearbox seal on the other side when replacing the drivers driveshaft?

Seen this and it makes me wonder.

Garage replaced flywheel , clutch some years ago and left two of the bolts on inner driveshaft loose, leaking only cv joint grease, so I'm guessing it is a not, but I thought I'd be prepared.

Thanks in advance.

Ps passenger side driveshaft could be replaced with only disconnecting ball joint X3 plate bolts and not disturbing the track rod end. Anyone done same with drivers side shaft?

On my sons Mk1 1.2 I changed clutch so had to remove Dshafts. I needed 6 new bolts for the gearbox flange and a new hub nut. I replaced the track rod ends and bottom ball joints anyway as they looked a bit perished. Think its easier if the trackrod end is removed but worth trying without removing it. Some gearboxes dont have the flange bolts if I remember correctly so a new seal may be an idea as your there anyway. You should be able to see the 8 bolts at Gbox end.

Hi Alasdair

I've had a look on Skoda parts and there MIGHT be is a radial oil seal that meets the driveshaft. It is a different size to what I found on eBay. Another car ,a 307 (passenger driveshaft) had a seal and leaked gearbox oil when driveshaft moved for new strut replacement, didn't need a new oil seal. I think I can get away without replacing?

I read there might be a snap ring and circlip, again depends on model???

Track rod ends were replaced last year along with ball joints, and with laser tracking at £70 I don't want to disturb wheel alignment.

The driveshaft flange bolts are there like on other side. I count x6 spline bolts.

Looks like my sons. From memory the drive shaft comes out complete once the hub and the 6 bolts are removed. On his there was no seal as the flange/seal remains in Gbox so no oil leakage. You are supposed to renew the 6 bolts and hub nut. I reused the 6 bolts but put some thread lock on them. Hub nut is use once and throw away. The bolts are vw triple square spline. Not sure if you will get away without removing track rod end but if its just the ball joint bolt I reckon it will go back in the same position.

Thanks! A job for the weekend. The Borg and Beck driveshaft came with new spline bolts. I'll disconnect ball joint bracket like last time and see how I get on. Tracking seemed unaffected - the bolt holes on ball joint bracket are tight. If I disconnect the track rod end, although I'd not mess with the lock nut, it is under some tension which would be lost if undone.

I got a new hub nut, it's only 60nm tightness with models fitted with air conditioning.

I bought the abs protector ring because last time it was unmovable from the old driveshaft.
