Replacement tyres

Featured Replies

We need to replace a tyre on our Elroq 85 Edition. It was supplied new with 235/55 R19 101T on the fronts and 255/55 R19 104T on the rear. Is there a legit reason for having different sizes or is it just Skoda trying to save a few pennies. I guess the question is " could we go with the 255/50 R19 104T on the fronts as well as the rear?"

It's increasingly common to have different sizes front and rear. Our last car had bigger on the front. You are only supposed to use the sizes that are approved for your car or it might cause insurance problems. The other thing is there may not be adequate clearance with a wider tyre on the front. Somewhere there will be a list of approved tyre sizes.

If the car is rear wheel drive then the wider tyres are to provide more traction. There's a pretty good chance that if you put wider tyres on the front you'll suffer with tyre rub on the wheel arches. You'll also need to notify your insurance that you've changed the standard tyre size.

Seems now that, according to the latest brochure, only the Sportline 85 and the VRS get 255 tyres on the rear, and that's on 20" wheels. 85 Edition now gets 235/55 R19 101T on both front and rear. Presumably that means changing to the smaller width won't cause any problems.

The wheel size also need to match the tyre size.

The difference between 235 wide and 255 wide is 20mm.

You would expect the wheel with the 255 tyre to be wider than the 235 wheel.

Wheel widths go up in 1/2'' steps. Normally the 255 would be on an inch wider wheel.

You have also quote three different tyre sizes in your first post?

Mmm. Not on the UK website. And not on my 85 edition deliverd late October. here's a screenshot, from just now on SUK website:

And you also asked about changing all to the bigger size, not the smaller size. I mean do what you want, but at the end of the day we can only give you guidance.

As you can see in the first chart below, the actual width of the 255/50R19 wheel is only 14mm wider than the 235/55R19 wheel, ie. 7mm wider each side.

Skoda might have provided more than 7mm clearance each side with the standard 235/55R19 8Jx19 ET45 front wheels. If so, 255/50R19 8Jx19 ET45 wheels will fit on the front.

Actual inflated width of wheel (measured from sidewall to sidewall, at the widest point)

235/55R19 fitted to 8" rim width 251mm

255/50R19 fitted to 8" rim width 265mm

Outside diameter of tyre

235/55R19 741.1mm

255/50R19 737.6mm (3.5mm smaller outside diameter compared to 235/55R19)

ETRTO approved rim widths for passenger car tyres

235/55R19 6.5-7.5-8.5

255/50R19 7.0-8.0-9.0
