Difficult conversation: L&K TSI 190

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

As an active member, I am often answering questions to the best of my abilities, but this is about my own car - a rare 38,000 mile L&K Octavia DSG TSI 190 limousine/saloon.

The car is quite seriously down on power......I mean....it is sluggish. I know it is running the detuned TSI190 engine but it is dog slow. MPG is poor and I am struggling to figure out what is wrong with the car. It gets regularly fed, watered, washed, serviced. The most recent issue was the DSG gearbox which West End Skoda had in for a week. They seemed to do a firmware update which hugely improved the performance of the gearbox making stupid gear change decisions, but performance has been getting worse for a while.

No issues that have come up from being scanned and I am slightly at a loss to figure out what to do.

Things at the back of my mind:

The DSG Pump has been noisy prior to the visit to West End Skoda and it is less noisy now post firmware update. I still think the transmission pump is failing and maybe the transmission is failing because of the lack of pressure in the transmission.

The brakes have always been a problem with this car. We picked it up and the calipers were sticking. I do the usual emergency stop on a weekly basis but I think they are still binding. They get cleaned and checked every 3-4 months. Cannot seem to get good fully working brakes that don't bind (although they feel good and sure when braking).

Due to the way the second hand car market is, car prices are bonkers. I've had a DSG fluid transmission change, new battery,4 all-season tyres, so feeling less inclined to change it.

I need to get the issues resolved first but would probably look at trying to get the power upped to 230bhp minimum as it feels so sluggish.

Does anybody know of a REALLY GOOD VAG specialist who are proper car people and understands my (properly OCD) brain and would be willing to look at this as a fix it and also potentially upgrade the car - prospect? Happy to travel to find the right people.

Thanks

Max

Was only the DSG transmission updated? Without engine firmware? OEM update? Or a tuner update?

W.E. Skoda......... E'burgh ?

Regards brakes.. Maybe you've answered your own question ?!!

Putting software aside maybe a more old school approach is required?........like checking air filter and replacing fuel filter ?.....could exhaust have a blockage ?

I dunno. It is harder if you think it has always been like this....

Tried doing a couple of 0-60 30 to 60 etc with a passenger timing. Either GPS lock speed or even with speedo error. How far off is it from review times?

I had a mk2 fl with the ccza, they were 200 and it felt brisk and torquey but not a race car, but good enough to think, ok I was moving....

I have a 2016 L&K with the 1.8TSI and DQ200 DSG gearbox, there's no way I could describe it as sluggish.

It's going into West End Skoda next week. I'll ask them what they can do to look at it then.

The Service Desk person or the Service Manager needs to go speak with the Master Tech or ask them to come talk to you. Maybe go out driving with you. No point the desk jockeys with no Mechanical Engineering training spouting whatever.

That was going to be my next step. If West End Skoda were going to be difficult then I'll head on over there.

Very busy so best get booked in. This is what happens when you have people with a good reputation which is well earned and have lots of return customers.

Hopefully Autohaus can sort you out if West End can't.

I went to autohaus for wheel alignment on an Audi S2 about 10 years ago, I noted many framed certificates for whatever accolades in their reception area.....however my car left with the steering wheel off centre. My experience wasn't a good one .

@JohnMack Did you turn around and go back to have that rectified?

No I didn't, everything else was in spec as per the printout. I drove it home, slackened the nuts on the tie arms and gave one a half turn clockwise and the other a half turn anti-clockwise, tightened the nuts and gave it a spin....sorted. It's what they should've done but wanted me to come back another day for them to rectify it. They told me it wasn't right when I went back to collect it ?...... I'm assuming they were busy that day but why not finish the job instead of asking me to rebook . I foolishly paid them for their time but decided I'd sort it myself as that'd be quicker than rebooking and taking back to them.

It was my first time (and last!) I'd been there, I went because they have a Hunter wheel alignment set-up.......I used to use the guy at Sighthill (can't remember the name, CLCM ?) but he sold out to someone who had little experience.

I'm assuming they (autohaus) has upped their game a bit since then but first impressions count and so I would never go back. I'm sure others have had a better experience !

My other half had a wheel alignment sorted done in the last three months. He had no issues.

Think you must have been unlucky that time.

Will keep everyone posted. Service is Friday next week.

Thanks

Excellent (with a big tongue in cheek)...not

Car came back from West End Skoda on Friday - no fault found.

Car broke down on Saturday. Really bad burning clutch smell from the car. Car will move, but is surging and there is a faint clanking noise from the front the car. Honestly, I think the transmission is probably shot. Something along the lines of the DSG transmission pump finally failing. Car is being collected by AA on Monday to be taken up to West End Skoda in Edinburgh. cc'd in VAG Customer Service. I know the car is almost 7 years old, but it has been kept at a really good standard; lots of work been done to it....it has not been neglected.

Good news - West End Skoda in Edinburgh have had the car in for the week and eventually come back to me.

  • I have a failed front offside calliper. Sounds like the caliper seals have died.

  • They also found the compressor for the HVAC system also had a major leak.

Hopefully all this can be covered by Skoda Warranty.

Good news - Skoda warranty actually works. The repairs were authorised and approved. Skoda Customer Services have also been really helpful too. Car ready to collect next week.
