Electrical issue - Engine won't start

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Model: 2010 1.9tdi Skoda Octavia Mk.II

Got in my car this morning, turned the key, and nothing... Then the radio lights, hazard light, and all dashboard backlighting LEDs began to rapidly flicker. The flickering is accompanied by a mediumly loud clicking sound.

I've checked the battery and I'm getting 12V across the terminals at rest and a drop to 8V(ish) when the key is inserted and turned one notch.

I'm normally pretty handy when it comes to mechanics, but electrical makes me want to... Nevermind.

Any advice or guidance is appreciated, I need the car back up and running ASAP (for work and family).

Cheers,

Ben

I'd start by suspecting the battery. Those voltage readings are below spec.

typo

Way, way too low with just ignition on - 8 volts is even too low while the engine is being cranked!

Also check for loose terminal connections while testing the battery.

Thanks for this mate. I've got a battery I can put in tonight to see if that solves it. I'll keep you posted 👍

Deffo battery. Mine was the same. Just on 12v but not enough power to start car. Loads of clicking and christmas tree dash. Chec its charging ok when you replace battery. 12V is only about 25% charge and probably has no reserve. I suspect a bad cell.

SORTED!

The battery has been replaced and the car is back on the road 👍

Cheers all!

Presumably your Octavia does not have automatic Stop/start?
