Space saver wheel size

Featured Replies

Evening - I appreciate there are a number of discussions on this that I've found but I'm still a bit unclear so thought best to ask...

I changed to a Karoq Sportline late last year and it's the first car I've had without a spare. Given I've had very few punctures over the years despite driving for my job I thought I'd be ok - guess what happened this week...

Anyway, to avoid the stress of being stuck at the roadside again I am looking to buy a spare wheel and kit and found the one on the Skoda Parts website (https://skodapartsdirect.co.uk/product/skoda-karoq-18-spare-wheel-tool-kit-2017-present/), but as my car has 19" wheels I just wanted to check there wasn't an issue. I've seen all sorts of discussions about percentages of size difference so it's got me worried! I did find a non-OEM 19" spare but doesn't come with the foam surround and I don't know if the tyre would then fit in the boot if I bought the foam and tools separately.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help and patience!

I suggest you first purchase the genuine Skoda spare wheel kit (ie. foam and jack kit) without the spare wheel. This will allow you to try one of the 19" wheels to see if it fits without lifting the carpet, etc.

Skoda sell two different foam and jack kits for the Karoq. One if for the Karoq Front Wheel Drive Karoq, the other is for the Karoq 4x4.

Because of the 4x4 system, I suspect the Karoq 4x4 spare wheel well is shallower than the Karoq FWD wheel well...so there might only be room for a skinny space saver with the Karoq 4x4, eg. 125/70R18 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 5/112 57.1

However, with the Karoq FWD I there might be room for any of the standard wheel sizes.

The foam and jack kit for the Karoq FWD can be ordered from any VAG parts department by quoting OEM part number 57A093860B. The Czech price is about £89 but the UK price can sometimes be a little more...perhaps around 20% more.

An 8Jx19 ET45 5/112 57.1 steel rim is available which would be an ideal spare. This was originally sold for cars like the VW iD.3...but the specification of this rim is identical to Karoq's 19" rim. This steel rim weighs 14kg, which is about the same weight as an equivalent specification alloy rim...so there's no weight penalty of going for a steel rim for the spare.

Bear in mind that the alloy rims and steel rims both use the same wheel bolts.

Thanks for the detailed advice, sorry for not responding sooner. I think that makes sense and I'll get the foam etc then a tyre separately to check everything fits. Have been prompted to get this sorted as I got another puncture yesterday, albeit slow so I could still drive home. Due to shoulder wear on this tyre and one other I've now got to get 2 more changed, so have gone through 3 tyres and a windscreen in less than 6 months of ownership - this is an expensive car!!

Just to throw in what I understand.

There are two foam kits. One for the 16" & one for the 18". The 16" accepts a full width 215 tyre whereas the 18" only accepts the skinny 125. The upshot of this is that the 16" will raise the boot floor pretty much level with the boot lip. Some see this as an advantage for ease of loading & closer match to the folded rear seats, others bemoan the loss of space. The 18" is designed for 4x4 or vehicles with the variable boot floor.

I believe the 16" is a 6.5J wheel whereas the 17 & 18" are 7J & the 19" in 8J. I suspect that the 8J may sit proud of the foam. So the 215/60/16 is probably the best choice for least space & a good match for the overall diameter of the 225/40/19.
