Strange noise under the bonnet

Featured Replies

I think SWMBO has broken the Octavia - since she's had it she's spent the whole time complaining about the noises it makes.

Whilst none of them seem serious (I turn the stereo up) ther eis one I'm sur eit never used to make.

Its going to be hard to describe without a picture but here goes.

As you look at the engine bay, behind the washer bottle, to the left of the engine, is a black "thing" attached to the inner wing. Its about the size of a fist.

This has some wires/pipes that go into the top of it. There are no means of identifying it, no symbols or makers marks.

It is making a noise that sounds almost like tappets (but obviously isnt) that is loud enough to be heard at tick-over inside the car with the bonnet closed and th ewindow open.

You can feel the vibration of the noise by resting your finger on the top of the part.

I will try to find a photo of an engine bay or even take one if I can find my camera - but for now........ any ideas?

I know exactly what you mean and mine is the same. I read it was normal but then again i cant hear mine over tick over unless im outside and its reall quite

Is it the carbon cannister?

Not sure, if anyone has a photo of a 1.8T engine bay I'll be able to point it out.

yeah, charcoal filter. They can be pretty loud. I was told it's normal.

I find mine noisier after sitting in traffic

So not worth replacing then ?

I think I need to fit a TDI bonnet sound insulator under the bonnet - should stop SWMBO complaining about the engine noises

Service manager at local dealership pre warned me about this noise he explained it was the charcoal filter. When they're operating they make one hell of a noise, some more noisy then others which is typical!
