Are ipods really as good as people say?

Featured Replies

So... all you ipod owners get your chance to pursuade me why i should buy one...

about to start back at the gym, so need somekind of mp3 player.

are the hard-disc based ones durable enough for gym work?

Ipod's are great but IRiver's are better.

THe downside is that there is more support for Ipod's.

Ipod's are more stylish.

iPODS rule.

Just sold a 30GB video to a forum member for £165 posted. Bargain.

The iRIVERS are great too - but I chose the iPOD as there is massive support for them. The iPOD never missed a beat, never crashed either.

If you're just using it for the gym, look at a nano or something static. iPod hard drives can be a little tempermental if they're bouncing around a lot.

A 4GB nano would take all the songs you need for the gym (though probably not your whole collection) but it'll be a much nicer size and weight and less of a pain to drop in a pocket or attach to you for the more dynamic cardio/active tasks. Being flash memory it'll last a lot longer with no chance of hard drive failure from constant motion.

If you're not too bothered about having 'an MP3 player' the iPod shuffles are cheap as chips, you can drop a Gig's worth of songs you like on for the gym and just let it randomly work its way through them. Doesn't do much, but it's cheap and miniscule so will be no worry at the gym. You just need to make a few playlists at home and swap music over to keep it interesting.

Basically, if you're just looking for music at the gym, I think a 30/60gb iPod video is overkill. If, however, you want a decent MP3 player thats stylish, functional and has 90% of the market share for accessories etc. you can't go wrong with an iPod. My 20GB gen 2 is still going strong after 4 years!

Ive had a few mp3 players before, but when i bought my ipod i was really, really impressed. It more the functionallity of the ipod im impressed with. Automatic playlists for newly added songs or best rated songs and the ability to custom playlists how you like. itunes make it more fun to use and it helps keep everything in order.

Battery life is brilliant, you will be impress by it.

Bought my 60gb ipod video for

Em's sister has an Ipod and told us she wished she'd bought the Creative Zen. So when we were shopping around, we bought one of them instead and it's been great :D

Chris

look at my avatat and tell me what id recommend :D

I have my whole CD collection on my 60Gb iPod. I've got a dock for my home stereo, and one in the car, so I've always got my whole music collection with me.

I'd be lost without it, especially at the gym.

Phil

Just get a cheap 256Mb one...how long are you planning on spending in the gym in any one go? :D

Rob.

What's a "gym" ? :P

What's a "gym" ? :P

its that bloke at the pub that sells dodgy car stereo's i think :o

Has anyone seen them mobiBLU mp3 players? supposed to be an inch cube size and store 2gb?

For me it has to be the Creative Zen micro. Its small, looks great in black, and comes with a FM Radio in it too. Will play more file types than an I-pod and you're not tied in to using just i-tunes.

Dont follow the rest of the sheep, I promise you wont regret it.

you're not tied in to using just i-tunes.

You're not with an iPod, either, if you know what you're doing...........

Phil

60gb ipod video

44.87gb Used

5 Movies

15 Music Videos

1567 Pictures

10 Podcast Subscriptions

8759 songs

A continuous playing time of 25 days 7 hours 14 minutes

What else do you need ? One of the best mp3 players to date.

You're not with an iPod' date=' either, if you know what you're doing...........

you shouldn't have to know what you're doing, it should "just work".....

:P

i'd still quite like an i-pod nano though, so long as i could add music via copy/paste in explorer

no copy pasting using any ipod, all has to be done via itunes, but if you disable the syncronisation in itunes you can then drop and drag onto your ipod.

i've just started back at the gym, got a 4 gig nano - that I upgraded to an 8 gig one!

Plus I got a nike+ add for it, sensor in your shoe traces how fast your running and uploads it on the net. Very good and good to challange people. Sensors only

and comes with a FM Radio in it too.

I love the Apple! The way that everything works together so well. Love the intergration of itunes with podcastings.

plus love the way I can listen to my ipod at the gym, and then when I get into my car I can plug it into my Alpine HU and contine listening.

I'd wait this week before buying though. Apple has a developer conference next week and might announce a new one or an iPhone or some crap about renting movies!

New ipod could look like this....

I'd been using iTunes for about 9 months before I got round to buying an iPod.. up till then I'd been using Sony NetMD's.. the MD hardware is/was great, but the software.. and no OSX support (at the time anyway).

I've had my 20gb iPod for 18months now... it's never let me down yet i'm really glad i decided to move away from MD.. . iTunes is dead easy to use as is the iPod it's self.. it all just works no messing around, and the smart playlist feature!! that's something u'll never be able to do by copy n pasting via windows explorer... :)

Oh yeah and it works great in the car as well.. no messing around with CD's

Iand the smart playlist feature!!

wicked feature that! Very very powerful!

p.s. lets see how many posts i can put in this thread!

I have an iPod nano (2Gb) that I use at the gym with a silicon sleeve and arm band that allows you to move whilst listening to tunes. I have to admit that it is very good for such purposes and that the iPod interface is excellent.

However, I can't read through this thread without recommending the Sansa e260 or e270. They are of similar size to the iPod nano (though twice as thick) but have even better battery life a screen which allows them to play video, microphone recording and an FM tuner. They are definitely the best alternative to the iPod nano at present.

I have an Ipod mini... only reason is because it fits in car on my dension... otherwise id jst have a normal MP3 player.
