TDI 170 vRS

PRACTICAL, EXCITING
Can the TDI 170 really return 48MPG? I thought it was really uneconomic. 350Nm of torque sounds immense though.....

No ****ing way it can. The 2.0TDI 140 can only get 48mpg combined! I would say it's around 43 mpg official. That's what the Touran gets with the 170 engine and it's almost the same weight.

After 7.5k miles my TDI 140 is now getting over 50 mpg - on a run down to london on monday I got an indicated 60.5 mpg.

I think a realistic figure would be 45 for the PD170 but it depends a lot on the driving you do

I wouldn't be surprised at all if it gets very close to the 48mpg. On the motorway at sensible speeds I would expect it to creep into the low 50's.

Well that figure will be a government approved figure, same as the PD140 had a government approved figure.

My TDI 110 gets about 60MPG on an average daily run down the m/way, so I can't see why you couldn't do far better than 48 in the PD170. All depends how you drive it.

Yes
...It has also proved that an estate can have the same sporting DNA as a coupe – another unique feat in the sector...

not entirely sure what the sector they're on about is, but didn't Volvo produce sporty estates years ago, and more recently Audi?

Other way round, but yes, it's hardly anything new.

350Nm isn't that immense - my old 130 bhp 2.0 TDCi X -type Jag used to deliver that on "Over boost" (or what ever they termed it), yes it shifts but its not immense..

Re: 48mpg... who knows, all I can say is that my Dad's 2.0 (140bhp) TDI Touran, thats been mapped to around 180bhp delivers around 48mpg...........

Yes both Audi & Volvo intorduced the concept of the Sporty estate around 1995.... I remember seeing the bright Yellow Volvo estate (not sure which exact model) with the black alloys and thinking "not bad for an estate"

That's the one..... I knew it had some motorsport connection. I remember there being some big deal about it competeing in the BTCC because it was an estate..... Did rather well from what I cam remember ?

 Just hit the back button on my browser by accident...... still though I was on the Blondes or Brunnets thread

I thought Reliant introduced the Ogle designed Scimitar as the first "sports estate" (actually it wasn't very, but Princess Anne had lots) in about 1969. Then there was the Lancia Beta GTE (?) in about 1974.

It was a Beta HPE. 2.0 supercharged (Volumex) Nice motor :D

Can I actually order a white estate?

Can I actually order a white estate?

Do you fancy looking like an ambulance instead of a taxi this time?

Yep! :D

Although in all honesty, it would be red for an estate, white for a hatch.

Wonder if it would actually make a difference what I order this time round? ;)

:D

I finally managed to get a test drive of the VRS TDI Octy.

It is very very impressive, and the power delivery is brutal. It reminds me of a 306 DTurbo, except the 306 was 'it's a diesel, then at 2k revs it was ohh the back of the seat time'. The VRS is this is quick followed by a wallop into the seat and is really fun to drive.

I'm going to take a 2.0 tdci focus out for a drive again and compare it to the vrs now i have driven one.

What disapoints me about the VRS, is the complete lack of equipment compared to other models. Tis a shame that it is classic + bits, and as such i'm now thinking about a nearly new Elegance 2.0 PD140 instead.

The VRS is a stunner mind, i just don't know if i would be happy missing the toys. That coupled with the fact that i'm not sure my driving license would be safe in a VRS:(

What toys would you be missing? You can have climate control, cruise control, xenons, sunroof, sat nav etc etc???
