Ride Quality New Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi,

After having the previous Octavia estate I bought the new Octavia...2.0TDI with DSG gearbox and elegance trim in an estate. Excellent car with one notable exception..the ride.

I find the ride very jittery and uncomfortable even on motorways. I have met with the Area Technical Manager who says that this is normal for that model. The Elegance comes with 16" wheels and 55 aspect ratio tyres. I feel that this combination may well be causing the problem. In fact he did admit that 15" wheels with 60 aspect ratio tyres could improve things.

I would be very interested if anybody has any comments on my problem.

I have a 2.0 fsi elegance hatch after a Mk 1 vRS hatch and I'd say the ride is better. Obviously a bit softer, but smoother, doesn't wander even in moderate sidewinds, better cornering, much better over speed humps!!! Absolutely no jitters - standard alloys and Bridgestone tyres .

Have you checked out the tyre pressures? I picked up mine a month ago and all of the pressureS were way over the top!!

I find the ride firm but not uncomfortably so, even after long distances.

I have the sports suspension and the 17" Pegasus alloys with Conti tyres.

I noticed the ride is fidgety and jittery at all speeds but I got used to it after about 2 weeks.

It's a small price to pay for super cornering abilities and excellent high speed stability.

dstev, I agree. Although I peed off with the car, I was gobsmacked the first twisty road I threw it down. The look and feel of the 17s are worth the stiff ride. 15s are for wheelbarrows

Certainly the best handling car I've driven.

Wouldn't do without the 17's or the sports suspension now.

went from Mk1 elegance estate to Mk2 elegance hatch - the Mk2 is better ride by far.

Mk2 Octy Ambiente with std 15s. Ride is fine, but it does suffer from crosswinds.

It seems to improve with time mine was very harsh at first and bumped and banged on the rough so called roads here.

Skoda were no help with ideas, but I dropped the tire pressure by 2 PSI all round which seemed to help, the reccomended tire pressures are high for a vehicle this size.

I also wonder if the shocks are a bit stiff initially and improve with time?

Thanks for the comment Toneboy. I have tried dropping the pressures by the 2psi you suggest. It did improve things slightly, but still not satisfied ride is even adequate. I have done 3.5k miles. When do things start to improve?

I'm on 4k now and the ride has improved by about 25 pc from new

Thanks for the comment Toneboy. I have tried dropping the pressures by the 2psi you suggest.
What pressure are you running now so ?

1.9 front, 2.0 rear.....should be 2.0 front, 2.1 rear according to details in filler flap

I have 18's, I was running around the 30/31 in front and 32 mark in rear, wasn't 100% comfortable with it so brought them up by 2psi before a trip last week, seems better. It was mainly twisty driving I wasn't happy with.

I have 16" wheels, standard, running on factory fit Dunlops and use for 4 people in the vehicle 30PSI front and 32PSI rear, but with only two people I tend to run 2PSI lower.

I do very little motorway driving and to be honest, because I pay for my own fuel on a virtually fixed income, I tend to drive around 50-55 mph subject to traffic conditions. On the country roads where I live these speeds are more than adequate and safe.

If you are a foot to the floor specialist then higher pressures will give you better grip and control, but then it is also harsher on our crap roads surfaces.

The general ride seemed to become smoother and not as harsh around the 3000-4000 mile mark, I have only done around 6000 now and that is since a week before Christmas.

I am currently running at 1.9/2.0 f/r which equates to 28/29 in old money. Still not a good ride for a £19000 car. Skoda can't hide behind a cheap car so you should expect less. Especially since the old one gave a better ride.

Sounds a bit odd - I'm running on the recommended 2.2BAR. = 32 p.s.i.

Sunday had a real mixed ride - M23/25 motorways, A12 [a "rough as old boots" road in parts], then a load of fastish country roads, sweeping curves etc down through Tiptree to Tollesbury - lots of different surfaces and conditions. Car handled like a dream everywhere, so I suspect something is out of adjustment on yours.

I find the ride very good on the rubbish spanish roads running at 2.2 I had a golf before, that had a good ride but this is much better (Octy 2.0TDI Elegance Combi on 16's)

How Do You Post A New Thread ?

By clicking on the NEW THREAD icon on the front page (just above all the threads) of the forum sub pages ie the menu page for all the new Octavia threads for instance.

The handling is alright, but it appears the harshness of the ride that comes into question.

I have to say that driving my vehicle on French main roads and motorways I find the ride in general very good, so a lot of the problem appears to come down to the poor condition of the UK roads and the Skoda's inability to cope with this. You seem to feel every thump and bump as the suspension struggles to cope with the rapid change.

It is not just me who thinks this my sons made the same comment about the harsh ride on most roads.

On my slightly noisy Bridgestones there is a vast difference both in smoothness and noise between old surfaces and that new stuff they have started resurfacing motorways with - ground up types or something? Get on to that and it feels and sounds like you have lifted off the road!!

I have a VRS, and find the ride very good indeed over all types of surfaces. When you say "jittery", in what way do you mean? I have noticed that the rear suspension can make you think the car is about to go sideways on the odd occasion when going over rough surfaces. I think that is a characteristic of the independant rear setup though.

Even small bumps on supposedly good roads cause a sharp reaction. Rather than ironing out the bumps it seems to amplify them. I rode in my son-in-law's Laguna last night which is shod with 18" wheels and 45 aspect tyres and that was great. Really good ride. So it is possible, but Skoda do not seem to have worked it out.

One or two people say they have got used to the ride, but to my mind that is accepting that roadholding needs to be at the expense of a good ride, but that needn't be the case.
