Skoda...Only For The Rich...And Not So

Featured Replies

I had to laugh when I read this in today's Daily Mirror..I quote...

Skoda is the new "Rich" Car.

Well off motorists are more likely to drive a Skoda than an MG ( Don't even make them any more?) or Ford, a new rich people's car list reveals today.

Motors which were once the laughing stock of the company car park like the Smart car  or Daewoo :thumbdwn: are now just as likely to be owned by a boss as a low-paid worker

Here's the best bit....;):D:thumbup:;):D Although gas guzling 4x4's are still popular with high earners, Skodas are tops with those on at least

People who have got money don't tend to flash it about and announce to everyone 'they've made it'. Look at people in professional jobs and what they drive.

You can tell who the show-offs are from the school run. People with prestige 4x4's who send their kids to comprehensive schools. They spend their money showing off and don't care about their kid's education lol.

So i do agree with the above but I'm not so sure about Skoda being the manufacturer of choice ;)

So if the rich drive those cars, does that mean the poor drive M3 beemers and mercs.

Money talks - wealth whispers

Nah, they're all in financed Lambo's it would seem

In my experience, old money tends to be less flash than new money.

Hmm. Remind me what other cars you have / have had in your garage? ;)

Daily Mirror = Fiction.

If that was the case, surely there'd be more Skodas being sold, rather than the VW/Audi/BMW which fill the company car parks? ;)

W124 Mercedes E class estate. Timeless quality, cost 2 grand. E39 M5, very subtle in Black, those who know - know. TVR Griffith, the best TVR ever without even trying, My Skud, soon to be replaced with an E46 330 Touring. I'm not one to have the latest shape - just the best, IMO.

I know people with 1500 p/m payments on Bentley GTs and 1.4m pound mortgages, just to have a big car / house. Nah, don't see the point.

to be fair, Skoda's are a top class product, who wouldnt want to be seen driving one these days, i would probably pick a skoda over any manufacturer these days, Audi would be my top choice but Skoda has a more exclusive reputation now, the cars are every bit as good, if not better than the majority of manufacturers, shoot me for saying this but in my opinion, Skoda have overtaken VW in desirability, VW's are bland these days, Skoda is still a bit of a novelty as such.

Skoda never fitted in much until they released the vRS, now they have smashed the scales and are improving reputation on a daily basis.

Skoda is the car of choice now.

its all about supply and demand, VW/Audi/BMW build a lot more cars than Skoda are capable of manufacturing, i know for a fact my local Skoda dealer can sell more brand new cars than they can get in. so i'd say that answers that question

I`ve had my Fabia since new, i have enjoyed the car very much. So when it comes to buy another car i`ll have another Skoda without any worries.

When people ask me what i drive and tell them, instead of the old Skoda jokes they say how good they are now.

I read that and thoughts immediatly coming to mind.. "thats a load of rubbish"

So people are being forced to buy more prestige models because Skoda are unable to sell them a car? :rubchin: I think that's pretty unlikely.............

don't be daft! are you honestly saying that if money wasn't an issue you'd still be driving a vRS Octy?!?

why do most(?) people by a Skoda, other than because in terms of build and performance it's damn near the same as the Audi/VW they'd have got if it were cheaper...

I had a choice of a BMW 320D, Passat , Audi A3, a Seat Leon or a Mondeo TDCi- In the end I chose the TDI Octy 1.9 - I did this because it was relatively cheaper which meant I could save around 3-6 Grand -

Which I enjoy spending on foreign holidays.

The Ford `a mate had one already and loved it but didnt want to copy

BMW 3 series no hatch for my mountain bike and wanted the practicality- turbos go wrong apparently

Audi A3 Too small inside ' the pillars jut too close to your face

Leon - couldnt get a 2nd hand one TDi with sunroof (a must for me as I drive with my head sticking out the roof) really like it though

Passat - a bit big

So I chose the Octavia - It has everything the Passat would have had but a bit smaller.I would like a nicer dash, nicer seats and less heavy steering but overall i like the extra disposable income it gave me - which is why i am writing from Menorca and not great yarmouth today :)

I agree with Blanes, I brought a Fabia vRS because its cheap, comfortable, good quality and fastish (my wife had a petrol fabia and it was one of the most reliable cars we had).

I ended up comparing it with a Golf GT TDI, and I really fancied the 4motion version, but decided I would rather pay

Rainbow:- that's the view take as well, I'm only quite young so whats the point in spending loads of cash on a car when you can spend it on other items of fancy. Say 3 holidays a year a really nice house, eating out most night ect.

Some people use cars as a status symbol "look i've got loads of money and your'e gonna know about it" but I prefer to blend in with everyone else with my Fabia VRS ;)

It is quite suprising the choices of cars the "top dogs" buy where I work. I saw one in a micra the other day  I can't say they are buying Skoda cos they are more Audi's than anything else in the car park.

I think the poll may be talking about the less image conscious well off people, the FD at a large factory on my ind' est' has just swapped his Volvo for a Superb and I know he will be on a lot of money and could easily afford something seriously flash.

Perhaps he has something flash waiting for him in the garage at home. You should see some of the ratty cars the pilots drive at work. But then why leave a 911 in an airport staff car park for days at a time?

I think all car choices fall into two camps - fitness for purpose or fitness for other peoples perception, and it's important to strike a balance. A mate of mine has his own FA practice and drives an X5 because he likes it and it suits his needs. He could have a 911, or Bentley GT, Rangie etc, but hasn't because his clients perception of him may change for the worse. He wants to appear that he is doing well, but not TOO well.

But with finance being as easy to get as it is there are a lot of people driving cars they cant afford and using them as a status symbol.

Reading around on here there seem to be a number of people who could afford much flashier cars but sensibly chose not to for reasons of their own. I often wonder how many of the people I see driving around could replace their car today should the need arise. Not many I reckon.

But how many of those VW/Audi/BMW are private sales? If it is a company's money you are spending, you would be more likely to get a flash motor as you don't have to pay much towards is rather than if you were spending your own hard earned cash.

The way our company car scheme works (my team leader on

Maybe these people are well off because they drive a Skoda - a good car which is excellent value for money. You don't get rich pi$$ing it away on flash motors !

Its hard to tell who is "Well off" these days - most of it is B.S.

With so much credit available (every day through my letter box) about 10 different credit card companies)

In the past 6 years I've known a guy who has owned a:

V Reg BMW 325i + Renault 5 classic GT turbo

51 reg Land Rover Discovery V8 (apparently)

52 reg BMW 330 coupe

55 plate 530D BMW with that weird boot.

I guess around 70k worth of motors

He also owes his own Dad £20,000 and is up to his eyeballs in credit cards- he borrows from one to pay the next-

Outwardly he appears quite well off but really its all an illusion. Shame its also turned a nice guy I once knew into a slimey ****. (yes he is an estate agent)

A mate of mine has 41000 on credit cards!!!
