Why do they bother?

And I pay them cause I want the badge and the residual value. End of chat.

Residuals on my old Polo weren't bad, but the vRS is holding value incredibly well, whatever Glass's might say.

The materials are better and the interior is better.

I am sat opposite a guy who drives a Skoda Octavia and he agrees that his car is not up to the high quality feel of the Golf.

Maybe he has a pre-facelift poverty spec Octy. I've driven the Golf GTI' date=' and I can tell you my vRS feels nicer. The seats are much better. In fact the only thing better on the Golf is the digital display on the dash.

I feel some people are trying kid themselves.

Indeed, and it isn't the Skoda owners.

Where would Skoda be without VW? answer me that???

"Ifs" and "buts". Where would Skoda be if Communism had never risen to power in Eastern Europe? I suspect they'd be one of the most prized premium marques on the market.

At the end of the day, it's clear which car offers the best value for money.

Thanks guys, this was a very interesting thread to read at the end of a busy afternoon...

So what was the original argument again? :D

The last point I would like to make is.. I would money no object , prefer to own a Audi RS6 and a Quattro Sport, with a Corrado VR6, and then something sensible and fast a Skoda Fabia/Octavia vRS for everyday use.

But if Skoda manufactured a four wheel drive, V8 biturbo Superb for, say,

Why do people in poverty spec VWs and Beemers try to race against clearly superior (but cheaper) cars?

wasnt Daimler Benz bought by Chrysler a few years ago, that might explain the quality now being ala the Vectra

It wasn't a takeover, it was a "merger" although it was the other way around.

well i own a vRS, but the recaros in a golf are better IMHO

but as this argument has spun away from what i was talking about, ill take a back seat

technically sold as a 'merger of equals', however more of a takeover.

recently causing bother as the head honcho Schremp referred to Chrysler as an 'operating division' of daimler-chrysler. now being accused of always wanting a takeover and hiding it and being sued by some parties who felt they lost out on big acquisition fees.

;)

SEAT is effectivly owned by AUDI with Lamborhini. VW own Bently, Bugatti, Skoda and each are treated as seperate companies that share and develop their own technology. Hence why the Audi TT and SEAT Leon Cupra R have the 225bhp version of the 1.8t, yet does not appear in the other brands. It seams they are setting up a seperate strategy for each VAG brand....

Lambo,Bugatti,Bentley - Nuff said

Audi - Quality

VW - Fords main european competitor with prices and specs that match

SEAT - sporty but functional

Skoda - the value brand.

The problem with this is that SEAT has very little individuality, with it's segment being a cross between VW and Skoda which is why the Octavia vRS has been so sucsessful. Why pay

;)

Huck, shouldn't that be 'peasant mode' now that you've come back to Skoda????

I havent had time to read the whole thread yet' date=' so apologies if this has been said..

To our VW owning friend i ask this...

Why did VW buy Skoda? Could it be the fact that "German Quality" has gone down the sh1tter recently, and given the right tools, the Czechs (& other Eastern Europeans) will consistently turn out a better product at a lower cost?

Ask many Mercedes owners how many dealer visits they make these days compared to just a few years ago..

The "highly efficient" German manufacturing machine has got fat & lazy. If they dont pull their socks up soon they'll find themselves in trouble.[/quote']

Volkswagen bought Skoda because it made financial sense and they wanted a Budget brand to complete what is a formidable power in the Motoring industry.

German Quaility issues is what has turned Skoda into what it is today. Yes I totally agree that Volkswagen have lost the plot somewhat when it comes to customer care, build quality and image. But I think times are about to change.

Like I said, i dont have a problem with Skodas, I like them, I dont think I would buy one, but I do like them and respect the drivers as much as any other VAG car. But to just lay into the Golf for being heavy, boring and slow, is just utter nonsense, when the like for like Skoda is the same.

I originally came over here to promote a show we hold at Ragley Hall in warwickshire and we are keen to get all the VAG brands together, regardless of how much they cost, or which badge is on the front.

Its all down to personal preference and I like VW (even if they do need to sort themselves out!)

I as perhaps others are bemused by the VAG policy of motorsport.

One would perhaps expect Audi to be in the WRC and not Skoda' date=' since Skoda have few real performance models, the RS really is only so they could compete, certianly noot the target market.

Seat had there championship last year and ETCC, but looking at motorsport over the past decades, Skoda have done pretty dam well in the real world, that is not WRC.

Afterall rallying is not headline grabbing to the masses which Skoda perhaps are been targeted with.

The VW platform I guess sells itself, as does Audi, but why would you buy a skoda, pretty much the question I guess on many lips...Own line manager went for a Bora over a Octavia, still not sure why.

I choose it for drive and the price, paying a little over 11k fora 6mth old car that with <1k more spend could chase WRX's all weekend.

I guess 11k on a MKII I could chaser porschers all weekend.

For the record the remapped Octy will match and hold off a 330d :D But oh how much more "comfort" does the 330d have, nicer by far for different reasons. I don't think anybody is dissing anything, this is an emotive discussion, least it's inhouse and not on Evo ;)...Now where's Huck.[/quote']

"the RS really is only so they could compete"

So I'm driving a homologation special a la 205t16,6R4,RS200,Audi quattro,Delta S4,959 etc. Supercool, you've just made my year.David :smileyrai :smileyrai :smileyrai :smileyrai

I was determined not to rise to this but alas I am weak. It would appear that Rob is one of those people who is motivated by the "keeping up with the Jones" theory. Somehow' date=' without substance Rob can deduce that the badge on the front of your car speaks volumes for your financial status. What a complete and utter load of ******.

[/quote']

I bought my car for me - not for others!

And I aint no Millionaire - so I can deduce to that the statement you made about me is ******!

And who the hell are the Jones?!??!??!?

Will be contacting you soon ;)

You really can't say fairer than that chaps.

Why do people in poverty spec VWs and Beemers try to race against clearly superior (but cheaper) cars?

Ah yes. I think I answered that quite some pages ago - because they know about the cheap bit but not about the superior bit. :D

You really can't say fairer than that chaps.

Must agree with you there - there's no way you can fault that!

Come on, Rob.gti needs to be given some credit for sticking up for "his" brand and being a good sport. (the thumb's for Kenny too ;) )

And I'm sure they are among the select group of VAG enthusiasts who are well aware it's best not to take on an Octavia RS in a poverty-spec Veedub...

cheers Dutch4x4, as ive said nothing personal, and u must admit, a good discussion too!! :thumb:

afterall, ive got a good deal i drive both!!

Thank you sir

I will defend any car in the VAG stable, its in my blood ;)

After all, the region I run is for all VAG cars, not just Golf GTI's. Check us out, if you fancy it (see sig for address)

BTW, I will have a go at any Petrol version, whether Golf, Skoda or Seat... I love my TDI :D

Yep must agree. All things considered it was a lively debate. Stick around Rob - might need to pick your brains as SWMBO still wants to trade the Audi for a Mk4 if I'm honest... ;)

Edit to say: Kenny, do you have any piccies of your Mk2 (I know you posted some previously). Just fancy having a gander at a Mk2 again - discussions today have whet my appetite again... Ta

Cheers.

It takes courage to come into another forum and insist that your car is better than theirs. But as you can see, Rob, many Briskoda members have graduated from 'better' cars to the Skoda and not found the latter wanting. I tried to get an Audi A3 owner to look under the bonnet of my car and see that I had the same powerplant as his - albeit a later and considerably more powerful one - but he wasn't interested. Badge is everything to some people, but where this applies to the other VAG brands the Skoda shows the whole thing to be a total nonsense when comparing broadly equivalent models. :)

You mentioned the MK5 in another thread didnt you???

I have a test drive booked this weekend as my local dealer has their demo delivered ready for launch at the end of month. Its the new 2.0 16v 140bhp TDI.

Should be fun ;)

Rob, Dead right I did. The crux of the matter though is the spec available after launch (No GTI if I'm correct) and yep you've guessed it cost. So in all probability a Mk4 GTI 1.8T might be on the cards....

Cheers
