Why do they bother?

Featured Replies

Really, I can't understand this kind of behaviour. I had someone in a Golf GTI (2.0 - you can tell from the wheels, although it may have been a TDI) trying to beat me off the traffic lights. I mean, the guy must have been about 50. He looked over at me and then clearly floored it off the lights. He badly wanted to cut in front of me for his junction.

I toyed with him, letting him have half a car length, and then destroyed his overpriced, inferior hardware. I mean, why?

I can perhaps understand it of the Audi A3 3.2 V6 quattro driver (who also got toasted) - he's got a halfway decent motor, and more money invested in hardware that ought to be superior. Maybe even Kev who's worked on his pride and joy Corsa, but Golf boy? Can someone please give me an insight into the mind of the mugs who think their 316 compact or oil-burner Passat is a candidate for "The Fast and the Furious 3"

The 2.0 golf (and Octavia) engine is a pile of poo. It was rubbish when it was new especially with is 115bhp. I would have laughed at him as i gently eased away form him as he was revving the nuts off the engine.

Have to admit though it is fun.

Had my neighbour pull up next too me in his Omega traffic car on the Lancs. He wound down the window and said "you don't stand a chance in that piece of ****". Well you guessed it... I ****ed on him to the next set off lights by about 20 yards. :D

Why? It's the badge.

Theirs.

And ours.

And let's be real - people who drive Golfs (or Astras or 307s or...) are uninformed about cars.

I always seem to get Golf TDi drivers trying it on...

Give your head a shake boys ! :nono:

So far in the past week, I have had the following try it on and fail most heanously:

Audi TT 225 - Splated :weeping:

Golf GTI 25th Anniversary Edition - Caned :weeping:

Mercedes SLK - Whipped

Subaru Imprezza Turbo - Nailed :bigeyes2:

Omega - Ha not hardly worth accelarating for

Porsche 944 Turbo - Kersplooshed :surprised

Oh yeh baby bring it on! By the way i'm not a boy racer, I just like a challenge when I see one. Some people are SO stupid, don't they know never to race a man in a suit driving an RS! Ha take that - POW - You've just been Briskoda'd

Sounds like you skoda boys are willing to take on the world with your traffic light grand prix.

I very rarely race at traffic lights, as i get fed up with people in Novas, cossies, tvr's, trying to race me. (I wonder if Mr. ffelan has forget about the 3 times in warrington where he tried and failed in his tuscan). At least when you drive a skoda (no discrispect intended) it is a little bit less of a magnet for these boy racers than my scooby.

si :D

Enjoying the new purchase then Andre ? ;)

Edited to say: I must say I admire your nerve, young man - I don't think I would try it on with any of those ... (maybe the Omega)

So the Tuscan broke down first? :drivesafe :D

Rob.

Must be to avoid certain embarassment when the engine/transmisson/turbo blow up :scratchch .

It seems of late since I got a wing for christmas that the only time folk line up next to me is, well one of these three situations:

1: Temp needle has not moved. :thumbsdow

2: Just lit a rolly :sorry: chilling out.

3: Have SWMBO in passenger seat.

As an aside is it only me that has the headrest from hell?

That is as soon as SWMBO's head hits it she has a headache?

Maybe it's the hitting bit... :new_silly

That's the funny thing - it's always naff cars or bottom of the range models that end up trying to race. I was toasted by a monster 911, which is all fair and well, and to be expected really. What I don't understand is people who have bought something with a 1.4 NA engine, and then seem to think they are a match for the vRS.

2: Just lit a rolly :sorry: chilling out.

I'm still getting over the fact that he smokes in his Octavia. I quite easily get through twenty a day but NEVER in the car. Even while coughing and wheezing myself into an early grave I still consider the re-sale :dunce:

Dutch4x4 seems a surprising statement! im sure at this point you are looking at my profile, to the left, to see what i drive!!!!!

yip thats right a vRS and a Golf GTi.

so im uninformed? well considering the sucess the golf has had and still has i think your the misguided one!

Oh sorry i forgot a Golf is one of those cars that hasnt made an impact in motoring history!!!(really?)dont think so!

to be honest im looking fwd to your reply, hopefully you can back up this statement!

oh by the way, Golf Mk2 16v beats an octy vRS to 60, so does a mk4 180bhp. to be honest my view is they are both really good cars, thats why i own them both!

I've never seen kenny upset. :hbomb:

I am pretty sure he meant the latest.. Mk4/mk5 golfs.. they are victims of their own sucess. and now there are better options about. which i agree with.

the Mk2 16v (and Rallye) was i reckon the last "proper" GTI before they went soft :P

Kenny, what Colin says: I was talking of the latest Golfs, i.e. the ones of the same age as the 307 also mentioned in my post. I thought that was fairly obvious but I apparently hit a raw nerve...

Mk1/2 Golfs belong to the Volkswagens that have helped create VW's reliability image, but that was decades ago. It's a well-known fact that modern Golfs are below average when it comes to reliability, yet Volkswagen still comes out on top as "most reliable" in recent brand image surveys. Which goes to show that current Golf buyers either don't care about reliability or don't read up on the facts. Since the Golf is often quoted by buyers as a "safe choice" I guess it's the latter. Which is understandable, as how many people who buy cars are actually interested enough in them to be avid readers of car magazines? So they get swayed by effective VAG marketing capitalizing on the old image.

How's that for backing up my statement? :D

raw nerve....not here......i just like people to talk sense!!!

as far as the mk4 golf goes, have you ever driven one? if you have you would have to admit the are good cars, ive driven them and they are good!

at the end of the day, your driving a golf/VW based car!!!

im a big fan of skodas, but me and my family have owned plenty of VW's too and to say what you have said about Golfs is not understandable!

the reason the newer VW's get a bad press are from people like you. And VW's are looked at alot more harshly than a ford for example, the press expect the ulitmate car when VW introduce a new car..get real...the expect too much! i would challenge anybody to go and drive an astra or 307, then a golf. if you dont think the golf is the best car there is no point in me continuing!

Rich, i just dont like people discriminating against cars which are actually good! some people just want to say things to be different.

Now, now then fellow Briskodans, whatever you drive, I think we all have our opinions, I know I have been beaten (ok, well used to be then..!) by cars which I thought were inferior. :Handshake

Driver error (me..ahem!) underestimation, etc. That's the thing I adore about the Octy. It gets far more respect sometimes by rubbing someones face in it!! :2002pimp:

There are certain things though you should never race......I'll leave you to decide what they are...

Oh by the way cheers Nick, they don't call me Iron Balls McGinty for nothin!!

I guess i'd better join Kenny in the uninformed corner, as my previous car was an Astra

Come to think of it, i've had 2 Astras...

Maybe i know something some people don't. ;)

cheers monkeyhanger

Kenny. the point that he is trying to raise is why spend xxx on a golf when you can get an Octy or a Leon for less. its the same chassis, and Skoda have VW licked at their own game for reliability and customer satisfaction.

Even VW have admitted straying from the values of the old mk1 and 2 GTI. thats why the Golf 5 has trick rear suspension.

I bought a Fabia because it seems better built, and better specced than all the other VAG small cars.. (i did alot of research..)

And also, when i was researching, all the VW dealers were for lack of a better word, complete assholes. when i was trying to get information.. no doubt because of my age.. they had a kind of elitest thing goin on. even recently, i pulled into the carpark in my fabia, and the salemen were blatantly rude.

what really gets to me, is that VW know the fact that Seat and Skoda are treading on their sales, so they are keeping these brands on a lead, restricting engine and drivetrain choice etc.... hands up who would like a 3.2l or 225 1.8t 4x4 octy?

:)

im not too sure that was the point he was making, but there you go.

to be honest there are reasons for buying both,

but by all means stick by what he said, im not here to force my opinions on people, but im also not going to sit back and let someone talk.................

if he and everyone that sticks up with his view has driven a mk4 golf can say they arent any good fine.........feel free.

PS its poor skoda that are left behind(but they did have the 180bhp before the golf, so its surely swings and roundabouts on that aspect!!!), the leon got a good deal, brakes 225bhp etc

Im not saying the Golf isnt a good car.. but i prefer the mk1 and mk2 in the golf line up. whilst in the modern day, the golf has rivals just as talented. and i refuse to pay 2-3k extra just for the badge!.

You have to admit, that the GTI badge is just a marketing tool now... its a shame really :(

Just to prove how uninformed i am :eviltongu

If hadn't seen the RS at the Motorshow last year, i would quite probably be driving around in a new Astra GSi right now.
