Is the Skoda brand still vfm?

Featured Replies

Been reading in here, the press and elsewhere about Skoda's ever increasing prices, and consequently the increasing ...so it seems...unatractiveness of the brand now in terms of value for money.

Is this the first sign of things slowly going wrong for the manufacturer? The honeymoon is over p'raps, and 4/5/6 years since the re-birth, consumers are now heading elsewhere? Many in here appear to have 'jumped ship'

Take the current Octavia vRS. Many have said that it's now too expensive. Is this true? How much was the original Mk1 version when it was released?

Add on inflation, extra bits that the old model didn't have, and how does the current model stack up against it?

Anyone good at maths?

Well lets think about this.. the Octy vRS is still about 3k cheaper than the Golf GTI.

The only other brand to be able to offer a similar price/performance is SEAT.. but their cars are cheaper in every sense of the word ;)

Skoda's are getting a tad expensive. There are some really good cars out there now at really good prices.........I think it all boils down to personal needs....I'd buy another though.

Cheaper in everything, except price...

I think Skoda is still VFM, but needs comparing to classier rivals such as VW... I dont think its as simple as that though, because by driving a Skoda you lose out on a lot of nice touches that the VW counterparts do have, imho. :)

Goochie has a good point. I think in about a years time, and 18 month old well specced vRS will be a VERY good buy indeed. :)

We're all comparing the Octavia to the Golf here... but how does it stack up against cars from Ford and Vauxhall? I'm sure there are some great deals to be had from the big 2 brands and I'm not sure the Skoda is such a good buy in that company.

I guess its difficult to compare.. as Vaux and ford rely hevily on the rep-mobile and company car lease market... whilst skoda kinda have thier roots in the "mature" owner... well until recently anyway!.

if its a company lease car, vauxhall and ford are pretty much unbeatable. but i wouldnt buy one for myself..

Also depends on which Ford and Vauxhall models you compare it to. I know the Octy is based on the Golf chassis, so it gets compared against the Focus or Astra for example. But size wise the Octavia feels closer to the Mondeo / Vectra.

In reality it probably lies somewhere in between, but the outcome of any comparisons will of course be different.

One of my original questions has still not been answered lads. Sorry.

How much was the original Octy vRS when it was released?

I'm just trying to see if they have indeed gone up THAT much, thus representing poorer vfm, or is it just a load of old hype?

I appreciate the Golf is 3k dearer, but is it any more reliable, thus making it more of an attractive purchase...apart from the snob value of the badge nonsense.

The MK1 octavia vRS, in 2001 when released was £15,100. I know because I got one of the first one.

The golf and the octy are more or less mechanically identical so should have no difference in reliability. I know the MKIV Golf and MK1 Octy had all the same problems (which were minimal IMO) meaning that the MKV Golf and MK2 Octy will/should have the same problems.

As for list price i think the list price was about £16k but i might have made that up as my memory is not the best at the moment.

Finally the 3K extra for the golf.........id rather get the octy and put all the extras on and have change but thats just me

*edit* i wasnt too far off then :D

Mmmm. 2 grand dearer now then. Quite a significant increase over 5 years that.

Seems the train of thought over less vfm may have some truth attached to it?

Thats inflation of 3% - how is that quite a significant increase?

Look at how the price of a mars bar has changed over the same period and you'll find a very similar increase.

Look at how house prices have changed over 5 years and you'll find they have doubled in some areas

So important you needed to say it twice?

But even with the huge 3k price hike' date=' will it hold 3k more in value than the octy? dont think so...

truth is Skoda are onto a winner with the vRS diesel... its every rep's dream... something that until now, only vauxhall have really been exploiting by targetting their "sri" vectra models against middle-spec LX/Ghia mundanos.[/quote']

The mondeo ST also comes in diesel form... tis on my list of cars to test drive when i come to replace my furby :)

Yea, my maths isn't as quick as yours!;)

I suppose 3 % isn't that much, just the initial 3k sounded a lot.

However, I may be wrong and willing to be corrected, but haven't car prices in general remained fairly static over the past 5 years?

Just trying to find out if the general thoughts about about Skodas price increases really do hold that much credability.

I think that Skoda has got more expensive compared to a lot of other cars. Yes, inflation wise, they are probably around the same, but compared to whats around now, I'm not convinced they are as good vfm now as they were.

Skoda are a hard brand to judge though, since they share many of their components with VW/Audi so should the price be compared to that range or to the more run of the mill Vauxhall/Ford?

Dr Zoidberg has a good point. I got my MK1 Octy vRS for just over

Also' date=' the point has been made about the nice touches that are missed out on by Skoda owners. I know dampened grab handles aren't much, but add up all the little things and they can count for quite a lot in some people's eyes.

Sad, sad people :orb_blue:

When did anybody last actually use a grab handle in a car, other than to marvel at its VW damped-ness, or mock it's cheap non-VW springy action?

3k is a lot to pay for blue lighting, damped grab handles and a smaller boot, IMHO.

4 years ago I bought my RS for £13400. The equivalent spec Golf was £18500.

Prices have gone up for both marques but the differential between them has decreased. Based on that I reckon that they aren't such good VFM as they were. They also appear to have gone up in relation to other marques.

You also get a bottle opener on the Mk5 Golf I believe...

Rob.

Oh well, then! That'd do it :D

I don't care about the value for money stuff.

I like the car ,what it looks like and what it does.Even though it is more expensive to insure than my last A4 1.8T!

Anyway, all cars are a waste of money
