And duly voted now :D

John Surtees

Only man to be motorcycle world champ and F1 world champ.

Mansell would also get my vote, just because of his gut's and determination, not a terribly exciting chap though

I wonder if Rossi might one day become the 2nd. I doubt it, but it would be fun watching him try ;)

Yep agreed, but for Rossi it's definately more about the driver / rider than the technology, I can't see him switching to F1 for that reason, I could see him going to WRC though at some point.

I have been following his progress since he was a wee squirt on a priller 125, To judge his quality as a rider, just look at where the other yamaha riders finish on the same (ish) machine in comparisson.

I didn

I've gone for Fangio if only because the cars were so much more difficult to drive in those days, and less reliable, but Senna would be equal, I think. Then again Moss, Clark, Stewart ...

Comforting how many British names there are :)

Toss up between Gilles and Ayrton. Both had extraordinary car control although Gilles drove with more passion and flare.

Both sorely missed.

measure for the greatest must be those who survived to retire and not crashed and burned. Lets all hope the schuey remains safe to the end of the season and goes down as FI greatest all time 'tactical' and 'surviving' F1 driver!

If it is a sentimental vote for the best F1 then senna but that is not the question!!

Nope purely,

driving within the limits of your machine is rule no. 1 - only idiots try to venture further and usually crash and burn! Ask any patrol cop!

I think it's very difficult to compare all the great drivers from the spectrum of time. Modern F1 cars are very different to drive than Fangios for example. Psycologically, I think the drivers from yesteryear were stronger. It was a very unsafe sport. They literally risked their lives each time. However, modern GP drivers need to be extremely fit. It's much more physical now. Also, the team and the backroom tacticians play a big role now too.

Objectively, Shumi is the greatest (by results), subjectively Fangio for me was the Greatest, but Mansell was my favourite to watch.

There you go - clear as mud

I read a quote once relating to the Mansell era. It said Senna was the fastest, Prost was the cleverest and Mansell was the bravest. Summed it up for me. Oh and I could have added Alesi was the best looking................but why did he have to have an awful squeeky voice:rofl:

Senna was dangerous ........he just trusted in god and went for it ...also a bit of a cheat .....I saw him take take out (not overtake) three people in front of him with the same manoeuvre at the same corner on three successive laps.

Fangio knew how to drive and Mansell worked hard to get his results........Shumacher just made the others, and the crowd die of boredom.

Spot On... Senna just wanted to be the fastest. Prost always seemed to be too wrapped up in the politics of the sport and Mansell just drove the wheels nuts off everything!

Again spot on. Schumacher is the only champ I can think of who would follow someone for ~20 laps, wait until they pit, then blast in a few quick laps, pit and come out ahead. All the others would have had a go at the lead car during the ~20 laps as well.

For me there is no simply answer. Senna was just unbelievable, some days he drove so fast even he didn't know how he did it. One year he was on pole at Monaco, 1988 I believe, by something like 2 seconds. When he realised he couldn't recall any of his laps, he'd been driving on a sub-consious level. When he realised that he stopped because he's scared himself! Also Senna did 65 poles in 161 races, where as Schumacher has taken 247 races to get to 68!

Senna was definately the fastest over one lap, Mansell was the best racer for me. Senna had 41 wins in 161 races and Mansell had 31 in 187, so considering the vast difference in their qualifiying stats their race wins are a lot closer.

The most complete driver probably has to be Schumacher, no other driver has won so much, over such a long period. Whilst he may technically be the best, he will never be the best in my book.

Ayrton Senna was the greatest F1 driver the World has ever seen. Not only did he give 100% ALL the time but he was the most technically advanced driver there was. He was incredible at last minute car adjustments and this is why he was nearly always on Pole during qualification.

He drove an inferior car sometimes to beat the best there was in the late 80's and in the wet he was the best there was.

Had he not been killed in such a freak accident, Schumacher would have had his hands full and not won 7 titles.

There will never be another. RIP Senna.

Fangio.............He had to drive the car...To much technology today......My Missus could become world champ

Schumacher for me for being such a complete driver, although it's not as chalk and cheese as that, Schumacher only sits behind people for 20 laps before blasting in a few hot laps because of the stupid aerodynamics these days which physcially stop a car from being any quicker than the one infront.

I've voted for Moss - has been described as the greatest F1 driver who never won the World Championship. Immense natural talent and car control. Also an all-rounder.

Schumacher is a driving god. He knows exactly what is required to win a race be it from pole or from 20th on the grid. At the end of a race he is the only one of the drivers not sweating buckets, of course he his cold and calculating in the car that is what wins races.

I think I saw a statistic once that Stirling Moss (possibly one of the best names a racing driver could have
