Most people would "get away" without a ban at that speed on a motorway (what road was it?)if they had a decent reason not to be banned. Almost all police officers need to be able to drive to do their jobs, and as such banning him would harm his career and potentailly disadvantage his family. Don't forget that he could now also face disciplinary action from the police. You think he "got away with it" but how many other jobs do you run the risk of also being fined or suspended by your employer for getting caught speeding?!

People need to get over this stupid idea that the police get away with things just because they're police officers. I'm a police officer and know full well that if I broke the law I'd be treated the same, if not more harshly in some situations than all these people that moan that the police get let off by their mates - it doesn't work that way!!

Absolutely spot on ! (although my Wife says i'm not a 'real' Policeman)

I still think this get out clause is silly - what better way to deter speeders than actually hit them where it hurts?!

Chris

Oh so when a normal person gets banned it doesn't hurt there career etc?

I'm not saying he was let off by his mates. He was caught by his mates. He's been given a "Lesser" sentence than a member of the general public. Thats my opinion anyway.

What sentence do the general public get for doing 105mph?

I belive 30 mph over the limit is a ban..Maybe only a short one but still a ban, but I will stand corrected.

AFAIK, anything over 95mph involves a court appearance. It's up to the CPS (not the the police) how it's dealt with - sure there was someone on here who got caught doing a similar speed and got 6 points and a fine rather than a ban...... :D

It all depends on the circumstances.

I once got let off by a very nice policeman for going in excess of double the speed limit on a motorway.

Anyone can plead mitigating circumstances.

A well respected football manager got 'let off' because he needed the toilet.

An ignorant buffoon football player got banned for speeding because he was /is an ignorant buffoon.

I turned down the opportunity to be a police officer (a long time ago albeit) because I didn't need the hassle of being known as a 'pig'

my mate ( using the term loosely) joined the police force and retired at 37 with

When I worked at our Wrexham branch one of our technician was caught doing 108 mph. He got 6 points and was fined £450.

There are a lot of circumstances where a Police officer would have to prove his/her innocence, rather than the usual of having to prove guilt.

We all drive, we all drive at whatever speed we see fit. And one thing is for sure EVERYBODY either regularly travels in excess of the limit, or will have done at some stage of their driving career - leaving themselves open to prosecution. There for the grace and all that.

Whatever the rights and wrongs are - certainly the british legal system isnt perfect - get stopped for speeding(no accident / damage) - 6 Points & Large fine.

Knock over woman and kill her outright - 3 points & £50 fine WTF!!!!!

There is an argument of course that as an Officer charged with upholding the law, he should be accountable to a high standard........

While we can say that it's wrong what he did and that he "got off lightly", how many of us are not guilty of similar motoring offences, and in better cars than a TT? :sofahide:

I'm guilty of triple figure speeds, and I had my collar felt by one of HM's Finest. He demonstrated a mixture of consternation at my speed, but was incredibly generous and let me off with a verbal caution. Suitably chastised, I've never hit triple figures since.

Conversely, my ex-fiancee has been rumbled a number of times, and at some truly daft speeds (given it's a Pug 307 derv-drinker) and she had (as of last week) 8 points and a couple of hundrd quid fines.

My own personal view is that while speeding is against the letter of the law, hopefully, said officer eases off a little and has appropriate driving skills to actually handle a car in those circumstances, as opposed to the majority of drivers on the roads today....... a stint as a desk-jockey might remind him of his responsibilities.

Absolutely spot on !

Well one word ********!

If I get caught speeding at over 95-96, no if

If I get caught speeding at over 95-96, no if’s or buts I get banned. Which results in me not be able to travel to work and therefore I would loose my job. Why on ****ing earth should a copper get anything different!!!! He broke the law so tough ****!! You can argue this all you want but in reality (as proven) coppers often get "let of" with lighter sentences

No you don't. If you can prove 'exceptional hardship' would result fro ma ban then you can use that to argue your case against a ban to the magistrates, regardless of whether you're a police officer. I don't think it's been "proven" that police officers get a lighter sentence than an average joe off the streets just because they're a police officer at all, actually.

I know somebody (who isn't a police officer) who has been to court twice for driving over 100 and never been banned.

I fully agree that police should be treated exactly the same, and infact that's what I said in my post if you take the time to read it ;)

I've took the time to read your post.

If you're friend was caught doing a 150+ mph in a car, Would he of been banned? I think so, But there was a policeman who was let off (omega).

This is why these stories make headlines, because the public are outraged by what the Police get off with.

Maybe they dont all get off it? Maybe they do... WE. Don't know. ;)

He wasn't let off initially (I haven't been following the second attempt at prosecuting him). Initially he was found to not be guilty of the offence as he was considered to be driving "For police purposes" and therefore was able to claim his exemptions from the relevent legislation. Police Advanced Drivers in trainnig regularly travel at speeds upwards of 140+, and on a motorway a speed of 150 or 160 isn't unheard of at all on the way to a job, especially late at night etc. As such, to ensure that e was safe to drive at high speed in a new vehicle he needed to test it out (or so was his defence).

The more concerning thing about that whole story wasnt the top speed of 160 or whatever it was, but the high speeds through less suitable urban roads if you ask me. Funnily enough though everyone wants to get on the "stupidly fast" bandwagon rather than concentrating on whether or not it was legal and safe for somebody to drive at ANY speed given the specific conditions at the time.

Put it this way. I've dealt with off-duty police officers, including some of rank, when I've been on duty and I've dealt with them exactly the same as I would have anybody else. In some cases I had no idea they were police officers until bumping into them at a later date... They didn't "drop" it into conversation while I was dealing with them as they're more professional than that. Maybe other forces are less professional than mine, but I can say for sure that I have never heard of somebody being let off with something because they're a copper in the couple of years I've been in. :)

Special?

Possibly ?

I'm an AFO (Authorised Firearms Officer) and protect Special Nuclear Materials. My duristiction extends 5km from my workplace or anywhere in the U.K or World with SNM materials being escorted. (Marine, Air, & Road). I am with the CNC (Civil Nuclear Constabulary) so I therefore don't make many arrests like the Home Office guys would. My rank is constable. I am in an extremely rare Police Force. (most people no nothing about us).

My colleagues in the Home Office do an extremely dangerous job under sometimes very extreme conditions. I'm sure that they would not expect to be treated in any other way because of thier profession.

Possibly ?
